Yelp
Bit of mixed feelings on this place. I saw the high reviews and it's pretty close to where I'm staying so decided to check it out. Glad I came and I'm tempted to go back to give it another shot because I feel like it has potential, but slightly missed the mark when I went. Here's the breakdown:
The good: it's so, so cool in there. Genuine speakeasy, unmarked door, really high class interior. They also have wifi, which I've noticed most places in San Juan don't, so if you're like me and stuck in a grandfathered cell contract that doesn't give unlimited data, it's a real boon. The waiter was nice and the first drink I had, the tropic thunder, was super tasty and unusual. Really thoroughly enjoyed it.
The bad: service was slooooow. It took somewhere in the ballpark of 30 minutes to get my first drink despite it being empty in there, almost to the point where I said something. Prices are higher than other cocktails in the area although not by much. My second drink was chaotic evil - I saw the ingredient list which involved maraschino and capellini (yes, the pasta) and though wow, this is so bad it has to be good: like when you first heard of dipping fries in your frosty and then it turned out to be the perfect combination. Nope, it was just horrendous. The drink itself was a murky shade of black and it was garnished by a tiny fork with literal pasta on it. I didn't even finish the drink.
Appreciate the creativity (sincerely!), Id always prefer a creative miss to an easy hit, but seriously - in this case I feel like I was punked. Did nobody try that drink before putting it on the menu?
Anyway, the drink list is interesting enough to return and give it another shot, but one repeat of my haunting black pasta experience and I might be out.
