Sector pilgrimage, pricey comfort food, forgettable “naturals”
Torpedo is a late-night Barcelona bar built around the classics done “chef-style”: gourmet sandwiches, a headline burger, fries, and fried snacks that are meant to soak up the wine and keep the room humming. The food is satisfying and well executed—this is comfort cooking with a professional hand—but it’s still, at heart, bar food.
That’s where the disconnect starts. The prices sit high enough that we catch ourselves expecting a bigger “restaurant moment” than Torpedo is actually trying to be. And yet the place has become a strange pilgrimage point for the industry, as if showing up is part of the job. We get the appeal—good vibe, open late, easy to drop in—but the cultish buzz feels louder than the plate.
Wine doesn’t rescue it for us. The natural selection leans more “concept” than pleasure, and too many glasses are simply forgettable. Torpedo works, sure. We just don’t understand the devotion
