Is there a spice shelf in the kitchen at this place? I mean anything, salt, pepper, chili flakes, garlic?????
Went there on Sat nite with the BF for late dinner and drinks. Reservation at 8:45, no problem and seated us as soon as we arrived. The atmosphere is very cozy and inviting. The lighting is appropriately subdued and sound level perfect for a conversation.
I ordered a cocktail which was delicious, albeit not strong. Perfectly balanced flavors with a grape and sage leaf garnish. My BF ordered wine by the glass: nice selection of cabs with a Pinot and Chianti thrown in for good variety.
So, why three stars? The food and the commensurate steep prices. I'm more than willing to pay for food that delivers on flavor. We ordered the Olive, Cheese and Marcona almond appetizer. As expected, almonds and cheese were flavorful but not so much the olives. While large and plump, they lacked flavor. We also ordered the Beet Salad with Mint Vinaigrette. This was better, had a little more flavor. Shaved golden beets with a little bit of goat cheese and mint. I never knew mint was such a good match with the earthy flavor of beets. Good to learn a new flavor combination.
Moving onto dinner, we wanted the Vegetarian Lasagna but there were out of it. We settled upon Gnocchi al Forno to share. This is where there was ZERO flavor, nothing, nada, zip. It came in a shallow earthenware bowl and was hot. The gnocchi were pillowy soft and fluffy, just like the should be. The sauce had NO flavor. Not even enough salt and I'm not even a salt fan. I can only describe the sauce as the sauce that one might find in a can of Spaghetti O's minus the tinny taste. Even the smoked mozzarella wasn't enough in quantity or flavor to save the dish. I think there was one piece of zucchini. For $22 dollars: Not worth it.
Service was efficient although lacking in warmth. Consequently, three stars for food with insipid flavors and way too expensive for what you get. I get it, Brentwood, expensive but you can do better.
