50 Obscure and Amazing Places to Visit in 2017

"Located at a highway junction along the R445 motorway, the Barack Obama Plaza appears, at first glance, as nothing more than a gas station. The outside has gas pumps, and the inside looks like it might house a few snack kiosks and a restroom. But oh how deceiving looks can be. The entirety of this plaza is a tribute to the first U.S. president to ever have roots in Moneygall. And while rest stops are rarely destinations in and of themselves, the modest Barack Obama Plaza in Moneygall, Ireland has become a very popular port of call for the many organized tours traversing the country, which now include a stop in what is described as “Obama’s ancestral homeland.”  Most people don’t know that President Obama has Irish blood on his mother’s side — his Kenyan heritage gets far more attention. But in 1850, a 19-year-old shoemaker named Falmouth Kearney set out on one of the so-called coffin ships that left Ireland and its Potato Famine for the promising new world. Kearney was from Moneygall. This little-known fact about Obama’s maternal relative came to light when he was running for president in 2007, immediately creating a sensation in Ireland. On his first and only official visit to Ireland in 2011, the president said, “My name is Barack Obama, of the Moneygall O’bamas…I’ve come home to find the apostrophe that we lost somewhere along the way.” On a 90-minute visit to the village, he visited the remnants of his ancestor’s home and drank a pint of Guinness. But the real fun for Moneygall started after the Commander-in-Chief left. Immediate plans were set to immortalize the political celebrity’s connection to this largely forgotten locale. The $9 million Barack Obama Plaza project was one of the largest single investments in a decade in Ireland’s Midlands region. Inside, tourists can purchase everything from mugs, magnets and cigarette lighters to T-shirts proclaiming “Is Feidir Linn” (Gaelic for ‘Yes We Can’) and “What’s the Craic, Barack?” (What’s Up, Barack?).  Before Obama visited Moneygall on May 23, 2011, the small village in County Offaly was nothing more than a quaint highway village in the center of Ireland. Just 310 people called it home. Nowadays, the village draws at least a dozen tour buses daily, plus other tourists who deliberately choose to fuel up there. The entire plaza is covered with Obama marketing–everything from the frosted emblems on the windows to the trash cans boasts an Obama seal, lest you forget why you’re there." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Excellent services area, very busy but very efficient, friendly staff! Plenty of seating areas inside and some upstairs too where there is a visitor centre representing the visit of Barack Obama and lots of information about him and past US presidents. We had tea, coffee and wraps with plenty of choice for fillings and very reasonably priced. There was a big choice of hot food and some lovely looking cakes, too tempting, something for everyone!! Fuel area is huge, plenty of room for cars and vans of all sizes. There is a seperate fuel area for large trucks. I recommend a stop off on journey from Dublin to Clare

I recently visited Barack Obama Plaza in Drumbaun, Co. Tipperary, and overall it left me with a positive impression. First of all, the location is very convenient and easy to find. What really struck me was how well-appointed the facilities are for a stopover. On arrival, I noticed a heated bench right before the entrance — a thoughtful touch especially on colder days. It was very welcome as a moment to rest or wait before going in. Inside, free toilets were clean and well-maintained, which always makes a big difference when traveling. For those who enjoy picking up mementos, there’s a decent souvenir section: you can find magnets, mugs, keychains, and other small keepsakes. The variety was good and the prices fair, so it’s a nice way to remember your visit. The overall atmosphere is comfortable and visitor-friendly. Staff were polite, the spaces were bright, and everything felt safe and well-organised. It’s not just a gas station or rest stop — it’s more like a little destination in itself for travellers passing through. If you’re planning a drive through Tipperary, I highly recommend stopping here. It’s more than just a pit stop — it’s a place where convenience, comfort and a bit of local charm meet.

We planned to stop here on our way from Dublin to Kerry after seeing it on the Conan O’Brien show...and we were so glad we did. Loads of parking. Clean toilets. Great Supermacs! This was the first of the Plaza chain service stations we've stopped at, and we were very impressed. When looking for somewhere to stop on the way back Kerry to Cork then to Dublin) we planned a stop at another Plaza chain services in Portlaoise... which was also great. Would definitely recommend it. On a side note...this was my first time trying Supermacs in the 26 years I've been coming to Ireland, and it did not disappoint. I'm just sorry I hadn't tried it before!

I never would have thought this place was so well-known. I actually stumbled upon it when I was looking for a break from a long car ride. To describe my impressions objectively, I'll start with the first ones. I was very pleasantly surprised that I could already see such an old American car from the roundabout. This gave the place a certain uniqueness. Unfortunately, I have to remove two stars because, firstly, the restrooms and the whole floor in the place were sticky and made you feel uncomfortable walking in your shoes. The restroom toilets were full of urine and smelled awful. Additionally, the sinks were all full of water because the water drained so badly. And the floor left a sticky feeling on your shoes the entire time since you entered. But to be fair, the staff there really put a lot of effort into keeping everything in clean and tidy. However, I don't think it turned out that well because there were too many people there at that time. Overall, I can't say that I wouldn't recommend this place, because it can definitely be a special experience, as there are a variety of different shops there, but there is probably a lack of enthusiasm when it comes to maintaining the place.

The most ridiculous naming idea I’ve seen in my entire life but the rest area is alright, had a good stop. Snapped a pic with my guy Barack. A true highlight of my Ireland trip, the rest pales in comparison, 10/10. Should’ve gone here right from the start instead of wasting my time on the Ring of Kerry.
