Barbados Museum & Historical Society

We recently spent 10 days in Barbados and had the pleasure of attending this tour. Our tour guide, Peter, was probably the best tour guide I've met. He was like a walking encyclopedia of information on the history of the Garrison area, the underground armory, Needham Point, and the Barbados Defense Force. Beyond the actual tour, Peter was very generous with his knowledge, answering all of our questions. I asked many questions about the United Kingdom and learned more from Peter than I have from a lifetime of history lessons. I would highly recommend the Garrison Historical Tour to anyone interested in the history of Barbados.

This museum taught me so much about Barbados! It’s a must go. We went on an extremely hot day and one of the first exhibits was sweltering to the point I couldn’t fully enjoy it because I was sweating so much. They should put in some fans or AC in there but the rest of the self guided tour was awesome. Was fortunate to have met the development officer on that day and expressed my enjoyment of the space.

Small museum with historical overview of the island. It's also a former British prison so they speak to that as well. Good for a short visit.

Unfortunately I was short on time and could only visit a few rooms quickly. There were informative displays but several rooms seemed to be closed, and no one else was there visiting when I was (about 11am on Friday). The area was well maintained and pretty.

Very interesting to learn about the History of Barbados. Doesn't take long to walk around (20-30 mins). Was bd$20 pp to gain entry.

Amazing. Lovely museum to visit. Interesting place. Especially kids spot. How they make learning is fun. Even for adults

The buildings, despite their history, are quite lovely. Set out in sensible lines if modest. The island history gallery has seen better days and needs curating properly, a set of historic rooms are shut off and unlit which is a pity and there is a lack of information sadly. However! The children's section is quite frankly amazing, so many subjects are covered in fun interactive ways. The African exhibit is quite beautiful, well set out, immersive and for the most part well catalogued. There is a separate exhibit by an opera singer who recreated some historic drawings, it wasn't clear where to start this, so it didn't immediately make sense but the items displayed are well worth a viewing. Finally, the Ireland and Islands exhibition - it has another name but I forget now - is quite touching and beautifully set out. There's an exhibit on Sir Garfield Sobbers. I don't know a thing about cricket! But it looked to be well done. There are numerous places to sit, most areas are wheelchair accessible and there are multiple toilets available. The gift shop is full of interesting books and keepsakes.

A really good museum. There were contributions from all areas of Barbadian culture. Definitely worth the visit. Location is convenient and easily accessible by taking the public bus for only $3.50 in local currency. Also, this museum is walking distance to the George Washington home. Gift shop features many locally made products at a better price than the duty free shop in Bridgetown.
