I saw Anne W'S photos on here and since I drive by on the highway a lot I figured Id have to stop!
Yes this is a nice place. There was a line of about 20 people when I got there, but I got in line and they do all they can to keep it moving and the wait wasnt bad at all.
They have cookies, breads, pies, turnovers, fritters, donuts and more. There is a line for baked goods at the west end and a separate line for apples, and vegetables.
If you pre order, your order will be ready to pick up at the apple/veg line as it is usually shorter. Thats very nice of them to do that for you!
There was also a self serve sample of cider alongside the bakery checkout.
I ordered some turnovers, fritters, and one apple cider donut. Of the three, the turnovers looked the best, but the fritter turned out to be the best. The price of the fritter was $1.05 and it was rather small size. Thats ok as some of them at other places are way too large and you feel like you gained 2 pounds eating them. SO this smaller size is fine and keeps the cost down. These fritters are good, but not the best Ive ever had.
The turnover? Looks beautiful, but when you bite in its chopped apple in small pieces. I was wishing for something like the filling of an apple pie but no, not at all. If you were to look
at the inside you wouldnt know it was apple right off. It also had something, ??cardamom?? who knows, but it had a perfumey taste and smell. I will post a side shot of the turnover. Looks more like mincemeat than what I would expect in an apple turnover.
The cider donut wasnt very exciting. It was more like the hostess donuts that came 12 in a 3 x 3 x 12 inch box.
So yes this is a nice place, and there were all sorts of NC apples. I didnt buy any apples but Im sure they are good, as I have bought plenty of NC apples. The help does a good job and its a fun stop, but I cant give it a 5 star as the baked goods I had just were not up to a 5 star level.
