I popped into this little spot specifically for the Lemon Bichon after a friend insisted it was a must-try - and that I had to pick the one that looked the most burnt. Challenge accepted. If you’re a lemon dessert lover like me, this bichon au citron is going to blow your mind. Think of a flaky, golden puff pastry, similar in shape and size to a turnover, but filled with the dreamiest lemon curd. The outside is coated in sugar, some of which is caramelized for that sticky, slightly crisp texture. The contrast of tangy, tart, and sweet, paired with the buttery pastry layers? Absolute perfection. This might just be my new favourite lemon treat. There’s no indoor seating, but trust me, it’s worth grabbing to go - or better yet, snag a seat on the bench out front and savour every bite.

It's a hit. They're not f in around. Hand rolled puff pastry is the signature, buttery, light and crispy. I had the sausage roll and the chicken pot pie. Both were great. Seasoning on the sausage was flawless with just the right balance of savoury spices without being over powering. Chicken pie was creamy and hearty, if I would critique I'd say they could add more filling volume and salt, but both were satisfying and delicious. Service was lovely, friendly and helpful. They could use a small counter or high top and bar stools though.

Google
Easily the best chocolate chip cookies in Toronto. They were out of fresh cookies, so the owner sold me some frozen ones. Hell, yeah. Perfect instructions, turned out amazing. Will be buying a dozen more next time I'm in the hood. Thanks again!

Google
SO good! Third year in a row getting my birthday cake here: the butterscotch apple mille feuille is unbelievable. And the pastries... All of them are incredibly good! 100% recommended

Loved it. Best cake and a great price. Kids and adults will find it delicious. Kids party or adult get together. Get this cake 40$ for a small plus tip.

Google
My go to spot for lemon bichon. I love how irregular shaped the pastry is and how buttery it is. There is a nice crunch when you bite into it because of the caramelized sugar followed by a nice chewy texture. The inside has a very small filling of lemon for a zesty flavour. I have been here 3-4 times and it has never disappointed.

Simply the best dark chocolate cake in the city. Barbershop seems to be known for its Lemon Bichon and this AMAZING cake, but man the sausage rolls, the almond croissants, the apple turnovers, etc are all amazing as well. Just order anything in the window and be happy you found a slice of joy in your day no matter what it is.

Google
I have walked by so many times and finally decided to step in. The employees were very kind and welcoming, as well as efficient. The pastries were absolutely delicious and beautiful. The almond croissant was the best I’ve ever had. I will definitely come back to try more!

Yelp
A local bakery shop that is European-style located on College and Ossington. Walked in and purchased carrot cake and coffee. There were savoury, sweets, and bread from Lev Bakery for sale. You can pre-order cakes online. There was a bench seating inside. Accessibility: steps to the front, no automatic door opener.

Yelp
Jill Barber, who used to work at Blackbird Baking, has opened her own bake shop at the corner of College and Ossington. I ordered the chocolate chip cookie which comes with a coating of sea salt, the lemon bichon and the ginger molasses cookie. Everything was very flavourful! They also sell baguettes from Lev Bakery, and a plentiful assortment of baked goods and coffee.

Yelp
Yum! I tried both the cinnamon croissant pastry and a lemon pastry and both were excellent! Some classic pastries along with some very unique ones, too. Friendly service and reasonable prices.

Yelp
I'm surprised I'm only now writing a review of Barbershop Patisserie, since I've had their divine Lemon Bichon pastry on many, many occasions. It's truly something special. It seems like it should be something run-of-the-mill, but Barbershop elevates this simple concoction to impressive levels. The lemon filling is perfectly (and simultaneously) tart and sweet, while the caramelized exterior takes the whole thing way over the top. I also recently had a chance to sample a few of their savory offerings, including their sausage roll and a mushroom-forward roll. (There was a third one, too, but I can't remember the details about that one.) All three were terrific; the filling was really good, while the pastry elevated the respective concoctions to a really tasty level. It's not difficult to see why Barbershop Patisserie has become one of the best bakeries in the GTA, that's for sure.

Yelp
Lemon bichon is absolutely divine and recommended to all. It's worth a trip going out of your way for! I'm not usually a fan of lemon due to its sourness, but I did not find this sour at all. It was flavourful without being too sweet as well. Even with its carmelized sugar coating which made it crunchy. The puff was so light, not greasy or soggy. The filling was generous and squeezed out with every bite... it was even served hot out of the oven!!!

Yelp
I bought: Sweet puff pastries - Lemon Bichon - Strawberry puff pastry Savory puff pastry - Chicken pot pie - Sausage roll Loved this famous Lemon Bichon! A good hint of sourness from the lemon curd, crisply caramelized, and flaky puff pastry (felt the richness of GOOD quality butter) hit a nice balance of sweet, sour, and nutty flavor. Crunchy outside (with caramel), flaky middle, and soft center. This texture - you must try this! They have rotating seasonal selections of pastries. This time was strawberry. Like Lemon Bichon, their pastry's richness goes very well with a hint of sourness from the fruits. Their Chicken pot pie was the best that I have ever had. Again, their rich and flaky pastry wraps perfectly/modestly seasoned, tender chicken pieces and gravies. A good volume! I air-fried a bit before eating. My gosh so satisfying and delicious. I heard their seasonal sweet pastry item for next week will be apples! Must go back!

Yelp
This review is just on the lemon puff pastry. She told me they sell out everyday on this and since I love lemon, I had to try it. It is caramelized on top so it is nice and crunchy on top and if you love puff pastry, this definitely will fill your cravings! Price isn't bad. I can't remember now but it's not something I'd eat everyday anyways I read their cookies are good too! So it's worth going back to to try, plus if you want savoury they have puffy pastry sausage and some other savouries as well. Hours I think aren't long but it is worth it if you're in the area

Yelp
Croissants were soft, flaky and fresh. Selection was great, with savoury and sweet options. But holy moly was this place insanely un child friendly and inaccessible beyond belief. Two huge stairs going in, with a heavy door. Then inside, they have fine china lining the bottom of an open bookshelf. Easy to grab, easy to break. They have. A giant plant taking up quite a bit of space which my children also wanted to tear apart .. it was a stressful but delicious 5 minutes.

Yelp
This is a preliminary review and based off of one visit. Food: The one item I got was the lemon bichon. I saw a photo of them on IG and it looked so mouth-watering good and it did not disappoint! I ate this amazing creation outside in the cold so the description below may not be accurate if you ate it at home: The outside is a hard glaze of melted/burnt sugar which contrasts to the texture of the puff pastry. The inside is an irresistible lemon curd. Service: The staff helping me is sweet and knowledgable about the pastries and desserts. Pricing: To experience the taste of the lemon bichon was worth it. I hope to try more of their pastries in the future.

Yelp
Lemon bichon - worth another visit. Chocolate chip cookie - a bit salty for me, but it certainly has appeal. Must try the croissants etc.! But the true standout for me was the staff. I had a bit of a surprise with the 'tap' machine ' which knew my email address even though I'd never been here before. I spoke to my credit card company, the 'tap' machine company, and emailed Barbershop Patisserie, explaining my discomfort with my address being available without my consent. The ONLY person who responded in any way that made sense was Jill from Barbershop! And they did a deep dive to see why it happened, and what it really means re: privacy. Jill took my concerns to heart and went above and beyond to give me context and peace of mind. That level of care means a lot. Thank you - and see you again!

Yelp
Barbershop Patisserie is a bakery located near the intersection of College and Ossington, selling a small selection of baked goods, mostly with puff pastry. Jill Barber, the chef behind the bakery, used to be the head of the pastry department at Blackbird Baking Co., another local favourite bakery of mine in the city. Barbershop Patisserie opened last year in December and is currently open from Fri to Sun, 11am to sell out. They also have caffeinated beverages such as coffee and tea to go as well. There are often lineups to purchase their baked goods, a reason more to try this spot out. I had wanted to try Barbershop Patisserie for the longest time, ever since knowing of their opening back in December. I was unable to find the time until recently. I dropped by on a Friday, about 15 min after they opened at 11am. As expected, there was a line outside of the door, with clear markings for social distancing. The bakery only allows 3 people inside at a time with clear markings of where to stand/wait. The delicious smell of puff pastry is present outside as well as inside the store. Once you enter, you are immediately drawn to the display of baked goodies that are showcased, all perfectly lined up. I ordered almost everything on the menu - the sausage rolls that always seem to sell out, the lemon bichons, the chicken pot hand pies, apple chaussons, and the ever simple chocolate chippys. Only thing I will go back for is the spiced squash with goat cheese puff pastry if they still have it. Onto the baked goods: - Sausage roll: Delicious! I can see why this items ALWAYS sells out. The flaky buttery pastry is wrapped around homemade sausage. - Lemon bichon: I didn't expect to like this so much but this was amazing. The slightly sweet caramelized exterior of the bichon, flaky but not too flaky texture, and slight sourness from the lemon curd inside. OH so delicious, I need to get more of these next time! - Chicken pot hand pie: What you'd expect from a chicken pot pie and more. Once again, delicious puff pastry. - Chocolate chippys: Honestly one of the most perfect chocolate chip cookies I've had in a while! These are a MUST GET! The cookies are crispy on the edges but once you get to the centre they are soft and gooey. The salt flakes elevate the cookie even more. Simple but made so well. There's a reason why this bakery always has lineups, I can see why now. I would happily go back to eat all their baked goods. I do also hope to preorder one of their cakes to try in the future as well! Do go try them if you're ever around the area!!

Yelp
I have only tried this place once so far and was influenced to try them out by a fellow foodie on ig. Get here early to avoid disappointment, especially if they have limited quantities of specials that weekend. I got Sausage roll - well seasoned meat with flaky pastry and oh so delicious after popping them into the oven for a bit. Sea salt chocolate chip cookie - a solid cookie that's both chewy and a bit of a crunch on the outside, my favourite! Love the addition of the sea salt on it for all my sweet and savoury lovers out there. Lemon Bichon - surprisingly so delicious! Slight tartness but not too sweet! Very well made and love the caramelized crunch on the bottom of it. It was one of my favourite items. Beet and goat cheese tart - a delicious savoury tart, perfect lunch with a side of salad or an afternoon snack. I was also lucky enough to get my hands on her hazelnut chocolate cake and it was so rich and delicious but not heavy. I will definitely be back to try the chicken pie and get more yummy baked goods, definitely a new favourite!

Yelp
Would give 4.5 if possible. GET the limon bichon - so delicious and lemony. Very sweet; caramel. 5/5. The sausage roll was good but didn't blow our minds. The pastry was perfectly crusty, but the sausage itself tasted kind of bland. 4/5.

Yelp
Seriously am I missing something here, seeing mostly 5 star reviews? Another example of a place where people are giving overrated reviews and I can't fathom why. Went on a whim to Barbershop Patisserie as I love sausage rolls and always on the lookout to find the best one. Spent $45 for mediocre and pricey rolls and pastries. Bought the following to try: Sausage Roll ($5.75 +tax) - 6 bucks for a tiny sausage roll is way overpriced imo. Tried warming it in the oven and the sausage inside still tasted cold. And since I know it was homemade, I was hoping that the filling will be decent enough. Quite the opposite as it was dry as hell and lacking in flavour. The pastry is also greasy and oil was oozing on my hand as I was trying to eat it. Tuscan Chicken Roll ($6.50 +tax)- Honestly I couldn't even tell the difference between this roll and the Sausage Roll as they tasted and look the same albeit this was more pricier. Underwhelming and didn't taste any Tuscan flavour/seasoning/herbs. Chocolate Chip Cookie - Nothing special about the cookie as it resembles Le Gourmand which is crunchy on the outside and soft/chewy on the inside. But just like Le Gourmand, I'm not a fan of this cookie and nothing to get excited about. Lemon Bichon - This is the only saving grace with all the things I've tried. The lemony curd inside lends a perfect balance with the crispy caramalized pastry. But still not comparable to the Lemon Bichon we tried in Paris. Overall not happy with the food here and will not be returning.

Yelp
I'm one of those people who eat with my eyes first. My eyes have been coveting the flaky puff pastry, cake and cookie drool-worthy deliciousness that Barber Shop Patisserie has been luring me and others in with on Instagram. Barber Shop Patisserie is a new patisserie that opened up near College and Ossington. I am particularly drawn to the fact that Jill Barber, former head of the pastry department at Blackbird Bakery is behind this venture (because I LOVE LOVE LOVE Blackbird pastries!). After weeks of this torment, I decided that Friday afternoon after work would be a great time to stop in for an end of week treat. First impressions: The shop is small and simply decorated, with the counter display situated prominently just left of the entrance. The shop is bright, thanks to the big windows and the giant mirror which reflected the bright afternoon sunlight. I was grateful for street parking directly in front of the shop. Unfortunately having arrived close to closing on a Friday afternoon, the only pastries that were left on display were the sausage rolls, which are apparently one of their best sellers. I bought one to try. I was impressed with the rich, flaky and buttery puff pastry surrounding the sausage. I shared half of the sausage pastry roll with my hubby, who was also impressed with the pastry and the mild sausage filling. Full disclosure, I'm currently not eating meat, but both hubby and I agreed that the real star here was the puff pastry. This is enough to make me want to return another time to be able to try more the puff pastry offerings. I'm particularly eager to try the lemon bichon -- a lemon curd filled, sugar rolled puff pastry which Jill Barber has apparently been perfecting since her days in studying pastry in France, as well as the apple chausson (like apple turnovers). Jill Barber herself was staffing the shop at the time of my visit. She mentioned that they make cakes for preorder with 72 hours notice. She mentioned some delicious flavours such as lemon meringue cake, cheesecake, and chocolate fudge cake. The prices for cakes are actually comparable to some other patisseries in the GTA, with 4 serving cakes starting from $30, and 12 serving cakes starting from $60. If you're pre-ordering a cake, Jill says that they are happy to set aside additional pastries or cookies that you might want to order to include with the pre-order. They don't have a phone number or website at the time of writing this review, so best to contact them via Instragram DM or by email barbershoppatisserie@gmail.com.

Yelp
This review is purely based on taste, because what I tried from Barbershop Patisserie was given to me. My friend Phuong (@foodiefork on Instagram) is a huge fan of these pastries and because of her, I've been meaning to give them a try but I'm never in downtown on the right days/right times to give it a try. When she came uptown last week, she brought me a bunch of her favs to try! I've had the lemon bichon, the squash danish, and the sausage roll so far. The chocolate chip cookie will be my reward for finishing this review. I also have a croissant in the fridge. One of the first croissants to ever come out! I feel so special and so loved. My thoughts: If Jill puts it in or on puff pastry, it'll be delicious. The sausage roll wasn't super salty and doesn't leave a weird aftertaste in your mouth. Definitely way up there on the list of best sausage rolls I've ever eaten. The squash danish is a little sweet and a little savory and I'd be super happy eating one of those for breakfast every morning. Actually, I'll revise my statement. I'd be happy eating both a squash danish AND a sausage roll ever morning for breakfast. BUT THAT LEMON BICHON. That one lives up to the hype. Crispy crunchy sugary exterior. Flaky pastry. Creamy lemony goodness inside that is not too sweet AND not too tangy. I tend to avoid lemon flavored food because I'm a wuss for tart/sour fruit flavors, but this is everything I want in a lemony treat and I'd 100% get it again. Someday, when the timing works, I will have to make a trip out here myself!

Yelp
Tried a number of goodies from here and everything was delicious. Love their savoury pastries. Their pastry base is super light, airy and flakey with the perfect amount of butteryness. I will definitely be back to try their other goodies. Don't think you can really go wrong with the selection here, will just depend on personal taste i.e., some people prefer savoury over fruit based pastries
google avatar

Donna S.

Yelp
I've had so many of their pastries and treats and everything is way delicious. Pastries are what Jill is known for and they're flaky, buttery and so tasty. The Mille feuille we've had ( raspberry tea and cherry) are amazing, flaky, creamy, tart and sweet. The chocolate cake is a chocolate go to and the lemon meringue cake, while on the sweet side ( my preference) is fluffy, light and worth the try if you like sweet lemon desserts.
google avatar

Sam D.

Yelp
Unique desserts and great service. Good addition to the neighbourhood. Definitely worth a visit.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious. Get the lemon bichon - I've never really seen it elsewhere and the combo of the lemon curd with the caramelized pastry is amazing. I also recommend their cakes. Chocolate is best defined as decadent and lemon chiffon had an airyness to it.
google avatar

Yelp
A friend introduced me to barbershop and it's always a treat when I come here. My go-to items to get are the lemon bichon, and the sausage roll. Others that I've tried is the eggplant pastry, the mushroom ragu pastry, and some other seasonal rotating ones. Definitely worth it to share these pastries with your friends, co-workers, families, and dates!
google avatar

Yelp
Their lemon bichon was delicious and so was their salted chocolate chip cookie. I also tried their chicken and their sausage rolls and though flaky, it was too buttery for me
google avatar

Jon D.

Yelp
Best bakery in the west end! The lemon bichon... the chocolate chip cookie... the sausage roll... The greatest trio since Peter Paul and Mary. I love that not only do they serve quality items but the items are unique. I've never heard of a lemon bichon anywhere else in the city. Amazing place.

Yelp
We always see a line up at this place and want to say it is worth every hype. My first time, I got one of everything to see whats this place about and loved the taste of everything! The cookies were so ooey and gooey, buttery and not too sweet. My friends favourite has to be the Lemon Bichon. He even says that it might be his new favourite pastries! I'm so glad to live so close to this place so I can get my sweet tooth fix.
