This is one of the best bed and breakfasts I've had the pleasure of staying in. While I usually like more traditional (read: antique) houses with respective furnishings, Barclay House has the interesting appeal of mixing old with new in a delightful way. Someone put a lot of thought and effort into restoring this bright yellow Victorian, both inside and out.
We stayed in the Haidaway Room which had its own separate entrance. Guests usually arrive by 6pm, but they were more than happy to accept us at 8pm while showing us the features of the room and ensuring we were happy with our room. Tasty chilled champagne and moist cookies waited for us in the beautiful suite. The Haidaway is the only room in the Bed and Breakfast that has a whirlpool jetted tub, so keep that in mind when selecting a room. I loved the alcove the platform bed was placed in; it made it seem so quaint and comfortable. We brought up our bikes from Seattle, staying the Haidaway was perfect since it was on the ground floor, and there was a nice hallway that opened up into our room for storage of the bikes.
Their breakfasts weren't the most delicious I've ever had, but they were hearty and had a great deal of variety. The coffee is excellent. What struck me most was the presentation of the food; I felt this was a fine dining experience with the fine silverware, china and silver creamer cups.
Speaking of household wares, I must admit I absolutely love the decor of the house. Next to a beautiful antique buffet table are ultr-mod clear plastic chairs. The colors of the main floor are neutral; calming blue walls with earthy beige floors and white crown molding. Black upholstered chairs and dramatic black chandeliers had some sexy flair, as does a leopard-print sitting chair and fresh colorful bouquets.
The hosts are wonderful because they've thought out all the details and are warm as well as professional. There is a computer with internet so guests can check their email or download a map of Stanley Park. There are Vancouver travel books and walking-tour cards you can take with you to explore the sights.
By the way, the sights are within mere blocks of the B'n'B. Located in downtown Vancouver, just walk 2 street over to Robson for amazing food, wine and bar scene. Some amazing Italian can be had at Zefferelli's, just a suggestion. If you want to go bike-riding, you are easily within biking/jogging/walking distance to the uber-famous Stanley Park. Even the aquabus stop that goes to the Granville Public Market is nearby.
When all is said and done, I would have a really hard time trying out any other accomodations in Vancouver. Thanks, Barclay House.
