What to Do in Cape Cod: Where to Eat, Stay, and Play | Condé Nast Traveler

"For a lobster roll en route to Surf Drive beach, swing by the Barking Claw, a seasonal stand which serves generous amounts of tail, knuckle, and claw meat Connecticut-style—that’s drizzled in hot melted butter, never mayo. Naturally, the bread is a New England hot dog bun, which means it griddles superiorly thanks to its flat cut sides."

Pretty pretty good chunks of lobster meat. Love the spicy lobster roll (entry level spiciness). There is a picnic table under some shades where you can eat your food. The only downside is the stall sit next to a dusty gravel road. Every time a car drives in or out, you get extra dusting on whatever. Also the price is about the same as in Provincetown and other tourist heavy towns.

Google
A food stand, we were looking for something out of the norm of the lobster rolls you get everywhere. We appreciated the creativity of the roll, you don’t find a lot of places on the cape trying to be different. We were on the cape for the summer and wanted something different. This was the 6th lobster roll we tried during our summer. This is more like a stand that you would find at a festival. I knocked a star off for the setting. I’ve come across a lot of these food stands all over the US, and they try the make the best of their low budget location and try to make a cute outdoor seating experience. They have one picnic bench, and the some more seating at this random building right by with rusty chairs. Some folks like us traveled an hour from another place on the cape to try this roll, us Chatham. We aren’t taking it home, and had to eat it there. Wasn’t any effort made to have outdoor seating. No table settings, lights, streamers nothing. Just one park bench. The roll itself is good, not the best but good and creative. It isn’t spicy at all, more like a ketchup mayo on top. The celery dressing, gave it a nice crunch. The lobster is pre-measured in saran wrap. I get that for controlling your cost, it’s just a cheap look to watch. Just have a scale and measure there. We got the roll pretty quickly as there wasn’t much of a line on a Saturday in July at 11:30. I appreciated the creativity. I think this place could be 5 star with some tweaks on the roll and the setting. I think they could even add some more unique rolls. I want to give it a 3, but I just can’t with it being a small business. I think they are on to something that people want a unique approach to a lobster roll. Worth a try, but I wouldn’t stress it at its current state.

Google
Great quality lobster and very nice service. Just a fun place to get a snack and the spicy roll is especially good

Google
the spicy lobster roll might be the best lobster roll i've ever had! the crunch of the toppings and combo of flavors and textures was delicious- i'm planning on coming every day of my trip if i can!

Google
The Greatest Lobster Roll of All Time — Period. The Barking Claw in Falmouth serves a lobster roll so good, it ruins all others. This isn’t just a meal — it’s a masterpiece. Perfectly buttered and toasted roll. Piled high with fresh, sweet lobster — claw, knuckle — no fillers, no shortcuts, just pure flavor. Lightly dressed (or not at all), letting the lobster speak for itself. Every bite is rich, tender, and unforgettable. This stand defines what a lobster roll should be. Friendly service, great portions, and that unbeatable Cape Cod coastal vibe. If you’re within 100 miles, make the drive. You’ll never look at another lobster roll the same way again.

Google
Great lobster rolls. This small stand has been operating for 12 years. I call their roll a hybrid roll. It's not cold but it's not hot either. It's cold meat served on a warm bun with a piece of romaine lettuce. Then they pour the hot butter over it. Definitely a unique take on a roll. I got their regular sized roll. It was delicious and fresh. It also comes in mini and jumbo sizes. Honestly, their regular roll is what other places would call a jumbo. Portion is great for the price! They also have a Cajun lobster roll and hot dogs as well. Will definitely be back!

Google
Wasn’t planning to stop by but then passed a girl eating hers and it smelled AMAZING. the owner was super friendly and generous and asked if I wanted to try to spicy version, so he made HALF of it spicy. It was so delicious. And generous.

Google
AMAZING spicy lobster roll! One picnic table and no bathroom. Otherwise Great experience.

Yelp
Two hardworking youngsters working in a pop-up / food truck setting .... Slinging the tastiest lobster roll I've had in quite some time. No real seating unless you are lucky enough to score the one picnic bench we saw - but you will down this lobster roll so fast that it doesn't really matter. Great service ... love the buttered and browned bun. The portions are still on the small side (hard to call 6 oz of lobster a "jumbo" - but they do). But compared to other lobster rolls you will find elsewhere, it's not bad value. My wife and I split that "jumbo" as a first-course light lunch and really enjoyed it. We will definitely be back !

Yelp
What do I say about these lobster rolls? Large chunks of lobster flesh, juicy and fresh, so tasty. The buns were filled sufficiently with lobster. I liked that they were innovative in the varieties available. Everyone loved the spicy roll though it wasn't super spicy which was great. The relish and sauce is a great touch. The ambiance is a little bit of a let down because we were in a parking lot where these were sold under a tent and we ate them using the trunk of our car as the table. It would be nice if they added some tables, chairs, and umbrellas. The customer service is very friendly. It was basically run by high schoolers who prepared the roll very expertly!

Yelp
Great lobster rolls! Lots of lobster. Friendly service. Nice picnic table in the shade.

Yelp
Stumbled across this little gem while my visit in Falmouth Massachusetts. Gotta love supporting mom and pop shops. This cute little food stand on the side of the road definitely hit the spot when looking for a lobster roll. Got to sit and talk with the owner and what an awesome guy. Takes pride in his food. Orders, quality product. He sells everything from hotdogs, to andouille sausage, to lobster bisque, and of course this delicious lobster roll ($28) that I had. I got a half spicy half regular, and the spice was just the right hint. He tells me on certain days he makes homemade lobster bisque and I'm sad I'll be missing that. Thanks for the good talk and the delicious food. If I ever get back from Vegas, I'll definitely stop bye

Yelp
Amazing. The spicy lobster roll is the best lobster roll I've ever had, bar none. Loaded with chunks of lobster meat inside a buttered, toasted roll, topped with jalapeño relish and spicy mayo. My husband and I got the jumbo lobster roll and a regular sized spicy version, then agreed after consuming both that we absolutely needed to get another spicy one. A must-stop if you're in Falmouth or if you're strolling through the bikeway. The menu is limited, just lobster rolls and hot dogs. But I love a place that does a few things spectacularly well. They've nailed the formula. I sometimes find lobster rolls to be a bit too bread-y but this one gloriously enhanced all the meat and was beautifully toasted, with no overwhelming butter left on your fingers. At one point, my husband dropped a ginormous chunk of lobster onto the grass where we were eating and I seriously considered abiding by the two second rule and popping it back into my mouth. Barking Claw is quite literally a stand by the side of the road (a tent, a cooler, and some grills churning out the magic) with one picnic table set up in the grassy area when we visited. When we came on a Sunday, there was an endless parade of cars coming in and out of the lot. The girls working the stand were so nice and one of them brought over our food when it was ready. If you're biking over from the Shining Sea Bikeway, it's only a few minutes away and you can stick to the sidewalk to avoid the cars.

Yelp
Love this little food truck. Great lobster role with melzed butter, yum! It is served on a large roll , not a hot dog roll.
google avatar

Hana M.

Yelp
Delish lobster rolls! I got the spicy one which wasn't super spicy, but it was super flavorful. It was amazing and I would definitely go back! Just fyi, it's just a cart and one picnic table.

Michael C.

Yelp
Of all the places we tried for lobster rolls during our 4 day cape trip, this was by far our favorite. Family run business, fantastic roll. Got the jumbo and they did half spicy half regular. Both sides were outstanding. We drove 40 min to try this place and it was well worth it. Don't let the fact that it's a truck in a parking lot deter you!!!

Loida P.

Yelp
One of the best lobster roll I had in a while. Simple ingredients showcasing the main dish. Lobster meat was served cold with piece of lettuce for crunch and served with warm buttered bun. Ordered the regular jumbo size ($36) and shared with hubby. My only complaint was that the jumbo size didn't live up to its name. Should be overflowing with lobster meat! I regretted sharing with hubby!
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
A little roadside stand with a very good lobster roll...my only knock was that the lobster meat was very cold...the two young ladies who work working were very efficient and polite. If the opportunity presented itself, I'd go back.

Yelp
You've heard about gas station tacos, so be amazed with parking lot lobster rolls. Their set up is quite simple: propane tanks, a flattop hot plate, and 2 folding tables under a red sport tent along the side of a busy road. Parking is on a graveled lot, and across from a simple picnic table under the trees in the shade. Our timing was perfect, arrived just after 11:30 am, and there was no line. Their jumbo roll has 6 ounces of both claw and back meat, slightly buttered on a toasted bun and leaf of romaine lettuce for crunch ($36). No day old fishy smell or taste! The lobster was fresh. Regular is just 4 ounces of lobster so why not biggie size it. It's what it supposed to be, simple. As we sit here, eating, their turnout is amazing with a constant flow of hungry hometowners.

Yelp
One of the best lobster rolls on the cape. Had a bunch of hungry mouth to feed so got 6 jumbos, they were fully packed and the aioli sauce and the green relish thingy added the just right level of heat and creaminess. Already recommended to a bunch of friends.

Estela H.

Yelp
The lobster rolls both the regular and spicy are delicious. My husband ask if I where to go again which one would I chose? Both! We also tried the andouille sausage and it was good.
google avatar

Jeff A.

Yelp
We were the last customer of the day as we ordered the last lobster roll for the day. The lobster roll was very good. We sat under a big shade tree next to the parking lot and enjoyed the beautiful weather. The staff was so nice and chatted with us for a bit before offering us their last hot dog of the day as they were going to be closing shop. Definitely worth the stop. Make sure to come early as they do sell out! We got lucky!
google avatar

Laura N.

Yelp
Owner reached out to let me know there was a mix up for my order and I actually received a traditional roll instead of a jumbo roll and gave me a refund. Greatly appreciate the honest business practice and good customer service. We will be back next time we are in Falmouth. One picnic table for eating and is mainly a take out place.
google avatar

J J.

Yelp
Delicious lobster rolls and hotdogs. Great service. Had a nice table in the grass for us to eat at

Stephanie G.

Yelp
The lobster rolls were amazing! There was so much lobster on it and it was so filling. Our food came out super fast and the people working there were so nice. There was no line and super convenient. The fact that the amazing food came from just a little cart, I was really surprised. Overall my food was really good and the people are nice.
google avatar

Yelp
My spot for lobster rolls in Falmouth!! The staff remember me and the line is never too long. Great location with picnic tables if you choose to eat right there!!
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Had the best lobster rolls in Chatham and were willing to drive an hour to go back today. Luckily I checked Yelp and they are closed today so I looked for the best local lobster rolls. This place came up. I called ahead and ordered 6. With all the spicy stuff and butter on the side. As I pulled up (I wasn't expecting a literal outdoor pool up stand type thing - but I was in a rush and didn't do my usual Yelp stalking) they were finishing up the last 2 rolls. Extremely fresh, delicious, perfectly cooked lobster. We drove home and everyone made their own versions of the spicy roll with the sauce and toppings. Such a different lobster roll flavor and all 6 of us were fans. So hungry and into them we forgot a photo. But trust me. Go here.

Yelp
Before my husband and I went to do a nice summer morning ride on the Shining Sea bike trail, I decided to do some reconnaissance work and look at which places may have the best lobster rolls in the area. Here is the only acceptable way to make a lobster roll: 1) fresh lobster with butter 2) encased in a toasted hot dog bun (or long roll is acceptable but only as a lesser option) THATS IT. No mayo, celery, or other bee ess. This place delivers the perfect lobster roll, and is totally "no frills" in the best way! The people who work the cart are helpful, friendly, and truly seem to care about your food. Can't wait to grab a roll from them again... I'd go out of my way to visit next time I'm "down the cape."
google avatar

Colin O.

Yelp
The Barking Claw is a little off-the-beaten-path food stand about a block away from the main Falmouth downtown area. The proprietors obviously love lobster, and they aren't afraid to share their secrets. Served in a Maine-style presentation with hot dog roll crammed deep with lobster and drawn butter, the standard fare roll is delicious as the clean flavour of the lobster takes center stage. But if you want the ultimate in taste, spice it up with their spicy roll. With onions and jalapeños, and a slight drizzling of chipotle mayo you will be glad you did. Give these guys a shot. They're polite and friendly. And the food is great.
google avatar

Nathan M.

Yelp
*Ridiculously* good lobster roll. I had the privilege to order one over a week ago now -- their spicy lobster roll in particular -- and I am still thinking about it. I've been telling everyone that it is the tastiest, most tender lobster I've ever had, and the toppings on the spicy roll only enhanced everything. The staff was extremely friendly and conversational as well, and their pop-up tent setup is so charming and exactly what I was looking for. I cannot recommend this place enough. It is 100% worth it!
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
What a hidden gem! A small cart on the side of the road, you will not be disappointed in the simplicity and quality is through the roof. They have hot dogs and a few lobster roll options to choose from. I got the Regular lobster roll priced at a reasonable $19 a roll you cannot go wrong. Quality large chunks of pure lobster meat. Remember this place is all about simplicity so don't expect a huge selection as lobster rolls is the name of the game here. This place has a few picnic tables on the side, but I would strongly recommend grabbing the rolls to go and taking them to the beach. Enjoy :)
google avatar

Monte W.

Yelp
This is such a wonderful find, tucked away near Falmouth Town Tall, they serve the most delicious buttered lobster rolls in town (maybe even the whole Cape). The buttered crispy roll, fresh claw meat, dressing and delicious sauce(s) are well balanced and oh-so good. Don't expect a place to sit down, but you will wipe your mouth until you get to to your destination. Wow.
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
If you are looking for a really great lobster roll chock full of lobster meat, give this place a try. You can get mini, regular, or jumbo rolls served simply with drawn butter and crunchy romaine lettuce on a hot dog, torpedo, or brioche roll, depending on the size, or you can take a leap of faith and get the spicy lobster roll with jalapeños, tomatillo relish, and a spicy aioli. I recommend taking the leap! They also serve hot dogs, andouille sausage, chips, cookies, and cold drinks. You can enjoy your tasty meal at the nearby picnic tables or bring it into the bar next door and have it with a beer. This is the perfect stop after the beach or a bike ride. It's right off the Shining Sea Bike Trail. Enjoy!
google avatar

Lynn W.

Yelp
Incredibly delicious!! We shared a spicy lobster roll and an andouille sausage. Both were among the best we've ever had. The spicy lobster roll came on a toasted brioche bun with perfectly fresh lobster meat, a yummy green pepper topping, and a spicy aioli. It easily ranked in the top 5 best lobster rolls I've ever eaten. The andouille sausage was also perfectly cooked, a little spicy, and incredibly flavorful. Service was gracious, quick, and efficient. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Yelp
Super friendly, and so delicious! Worth every penny! My husband and I devoured 3 lobster rolls which was way to many but we didn't regret it lol you will not be disappointed

Yelp
Best lobster rolls EVER! The Barking Claw is a sign of springtime. For the most part, they open in May and end their season around Labor Day (tho this year, they were still open in October) They have a roadside cart beside Grumpy's Pub, and often appear at festivals, like the Falmouth Village Street Fair or the Woods Hole May Day Festival at the ballpark. There's outdoor dining setup under the trees at Grumpy's. I went for a spicy mini-lobster roll ($15, with two ounces of pure lobster meat) It's covered with jalapeño slices and slathered in chipotle sauce. Spicy, kicky, and delicious! It's on a brioche bun. It's buttered (like a traditional Connecticut lobster roll), no mayo, but it's served cold like a traditional Maine lobster roll. Plus, it has Cajun seasonings. The service is friendly and superb. As they say in New Orleans- laissez le bon temps rouler! Let the good times roll- in this case, a lobster roll!

Jill R.

Yelp
Exactly what I was expecting!! Perfect!! We had the traditional and it was super yummy!
google avatar

Stephanie Q.

Yelp
Have you ever had a SPICY lobster roll? The Barking Claw is a small food stand next to Grumpy's pub and they have the most amazing spicy lobster roll!!! This is a no frills place, there is free parking as well as picnic benches. If you want alcohol, you can go to Grumpy's next door. I have had many lobster rolls in many places- hot, cold, with butter, with mayo etc. But I've never had a spicy lobster roll so I was very excited to try it. Let me tell you, it was delicious. The lobster had jalapeno tomatillo relish, some Cajun seasoning and a spicy chipotle aioli- yum. The roll was buttered and grilled to perfection. The owner even came by and explained how he came up with the idea of a spicy lobster roll. If you come to the cape, make sure you get your hands on a spicy lobstah roll. You won't find them anywhere else!

Danny T.

Yelp
Our family comes to the Cape every summer and our annual tradition is to get a spicy lobster roll at the Barking Claw. I swear I think about this throughout the year until I get my annual fix. They place a bountiful amount of fresh lobster in a toasted brioche roll with minimal mayo. This is delicious in itself, but what takes this lobster roll above and beyond all other lobster rolls is the super fresh jalapeño relish and aïoli sauce finished with some hot butter. Not too spicy, just enough to give it some heat. An amazing combination of texture and taste.
google avatar

Skylar S.

Yelp
The best roll on Cape Cod!! We tried 5 different lobster rolls while we were here and The Barking Claw was the best of the best!!
google avatar

Tom H.

Yelp
Less overhead = better prices. This is a food cart and some tables, in a gravel lot. It's close to the Curling Club, so it's a no brainer stop at least once on our visits. This is the drawn hot butter version. I recently discovered the spicy mayo, which is great for me. I don't have to use the hot sauce in the car. Lol. Great, friendly staff is always gloved up when doing food handling. Bun is standard. The Romain leaf varies. I've had hard, crunchy that interrupts the lobster texture. I've had the soft, limp leaf that tears and hangs like seaweed on your lip. The Lobster is top notch. HUGE chunks of tail and claw. There is no smell or chewiness to it. I see now they are doing quahogs. That will be on my next visit. This better lobster roll is over $20 in a restaurant, but not here. It's not something your budget will allow a family to dine on everyday. Bags of chips and canned/bottled drinks are also available. If you need libations, you can step just next door into Grumpy's. Grab some summer side dishes at the deli. A cooler of cold refreshments. Maybe some cookies. Pack your picnic basket and chairs in the car for the Barking Claw. It will make for a memorable family lunch stop.

Yelp
1st lobster rolls of our vacation & they were awesome!! Quick-They're closing after Sunday for the season. We're from California... and we're coming back for more! 9/22 Our 2nd visit & so glad we "did it again" on the last day of their season. So yummy! Best wishes guys!
google avatar

Bob M.

Yelp
This is my "go to" place when I want a great lobster roll. The classic roll can't be beat - buttered & grilled roll, lettuce, celery salt, lobster meat, and melted butter. No need for anything else. The spicy lobster roll is fantastic too!

Mark Y.

Yelp
A fun little spot- lobster rolls done right. Service is great. Good seating outside in greenery.
google avatar

Joe G.

Yelp
I love lobster rolls. Over the years I have found they are best at stands, trucks and dockside. This lobster roll is worth every penny: simple, fresh, delicious. A proper roll that can withstand the heft of the lobster meat. Cold meat, butter drizzled, lettuce lining underneath to keep the roll from getting soggy. Perfection.
google avatar

Clay S.

Yelp
You have to stop at this roadside food stand! Their lobster rolls, regular or spicy, are amazing! We will come back again and again... They take credit cards

Anthony D.

Yelp
First time to the Cape's and lobster rolls were on my bucket list. I have been to 2 other places that brag to have the best lobster rolls around. I wanted to try one more before heading home. We stopped here at Barking Claw and ordered two spicy rolls. They were the best by far!!!!! The girls were friendly and efficient. Even let me get a picture with them. Don't let the canopy setup detour you from stopping. You won't be disappointed in the Spicy lobster roll!!!!
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
We booked The Barking Claw for our wedding and it was a huge hit! Tom was so awesome and easy to work with. I would 100% recommend booking for an event if you can, everyone loved it!

Annie D.

Yelp
We tried the original lobster roll, it was fresh, and had a good amount of lobster meat. The hotdog roll was fresh and lightly toasted. It was a healthy option for sure, We're fans of a little more butter on our rolls. This could just be personal taste, or perhaps we could have asked for a slightly more buttery option. Great service, sweet people, casual cart, grab and go. Husband had the jumbo it was pricey. Definitely try!
google avatar

Ronnie G.

Yelp
Oh man, this place right here had an incredibly delicious spicy lobster roll. Jumbo lumps of lobster on a brioche roll, topped with some guajillo sauce! This roll is stuffed and sloppy so get your napkins ready, or enjoy the messiness. If you're hungry, I would get two rolls but even just having one leaves you feeling really good. Enjoy!
google avatar

Donna M.

Yelp
I've enjoyed eating Lobster Rolls @ quite a few places in the Northeast. Today I had the best Lobster Roll ever @ The Barking Claw. I asked for an extra dose of hot butter & celery salt. Every bite was sweet & succulent. I really don't plan to order one anywhere else. That's how seriously delicious it was. & I sure don't want mayo ever again, that's too much like tuna salad, chicken salad, etc. Hot Butter is the way to go!

Alex G.

Yelp
Absolutely awesome. It is definitely pricey (for lobster rolls for $140+) but we had to order two extra large rolls after we inhaled the first two. Maybe it's because we rarely eat lobster (as we live in DC) but these were delicious. They toast the bread on a griddle, add lettuce, lobster, jalapeño relish, spicy aioli, and a warm butter reduction. A must try!
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
First trip to the CLAW will most certainly will not be my last. Grabbed an andouille sausage hotdog and a Quahog. Both were unbelievable. The spicy sauce on the sausage was perfect. Quahog was the best I've had in my 2 years on the cape. I will be getting one of their famed lobster rolls tomorrow. Everyone working there could not have been friendlier. Update. I'll be honest. Lobster Rolls have never really done it for me. They seem like a pile of cold mayo with lobster mixed in. The Barking Claw lobster rolls are the best ever. Fresh, simple, delicious. THEN I tried their spicy Lobster Roll. It's the best thing I've ever had. Period.
google avatar

Jason D.

Yelp
so yummy! i've been back twice now. the spicy lobster roll was amazing. perfect balance between the richness of the sauce and the acidity of the relish. would recommend!
google avatar

Lindsey J.

Yelp
My husband and I went here because of the lobster roll reviews. Dear lord- words cannot describe how amazing the food here is. The spicy lobster roll is HANDS DOWN the most amazing thing I've ever eaten. I came back the next day for another. The stuffed quahog was also delicious! The best lobster roll I've ever had, for sure! Go here you wont regret it!
google avatar

Thu N.

Yelp
Great no frills cart. Very limited choices but great place if ya just want a lobster roll or hot dog. Spicy roll is just normal roll with a spicy mayo based sauce added and some relish. A few picnic tables and plenty of parking. Lobster was fresh and service was quick.
