Barkly Square Brunswick: A Comfortable Local Favourite with Character Located in the heart of Brunswick, Barkly Square is a no-fuss, community-focused shopping centre that continues to serve its purpose without needing to be flashy. While it may not be Melbourne’s trendiest mall, it has everything a local needs—plus a bit of unexpected charm along the way. A Functional, Familiar Space At first glance, Barkly Square isn’t trying to compete with glitzy shopping centres. It’s smaller in scale, with an older structure that’s seen some mild renovations over the years. But there’s something comforting about that. It feels like a place that’s been around long enough to become part of people’s weekly routine, and it doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. The layout is fairly straightforward, with a central walkway and a mix of major retailers, local boutiques, food outlets, and service-based shops. There’s decent natural lighting, friendly staff throughout, and a chilled-out atmosphere that matches the relaxed Brunswick lifestyle. Shopping Essentials: All the Basics Covered You’ll find Woolworths, Kmart, and ALDI, which take care of all your general needs—whether it’s a full grocery shop, a replacement phone charger, or a quick home essentials run. While there aren’t high-end fashion labels or major tech stores here, Barkly Square is strong in practical shopping. The addition of smaller local businesses adds character. There’s a nice mix of bookstores, a bulk foods store (The Source Bulk Foods), pharmacy services like TerryWhite Chemmart, and even some quirky gift and lifestyle shops. It’s not a shopping destination for a full fashion spree, but it delivers what most people genuinely need. Food & Coffee: Pleasant Surprises One of Barkly Square’s most enjoyable aspects is its food and café options. From a reliable Grill’d and Roll’d to Sushi Sushi, Boost Juice, and Bakers Delight, there’s a satisfying range of casual eats. The star of the food scene, however, is Code Black Coffee, located outside near the main entrance. Known for its top-tier coffee and modern café atmosphere, it’s become a local favourite. People don’t just pop in for caffeine—they linger, meet friends, or get work done on laptops. It brings a real Brunswick vibe to the centre. A newly opened woodfired pizza café (2024) adds to the mix, serving up authentic Italian-style slices with indoor and outdoor seating. It’s a fresh and welcome addition, especially for those wanting more than a food court experience. Community Atmosphere One of the best parts of Barkly Square is its lived-in, friendly vibe. It’s not packed with tourists or lined with international luxury brands. Instead, it’s filled with parents and prams, students, retirees, and long-time locals who know their baristas by name. It’s a space where people come not just to shop but to connect. That’s something many bigger centres are missing. There’s a sense of casual community, and the quieter, smaller-scale environment makes it easy to feel comfortable. Parking & Access Parking is free and available on the rooftop, though it can get quite busy on weekends and around school pickup times. During weekdays, it’s generally easier to find a spot. The centre is also accessible via public transport, with Jewell Station just a short walk away and trams running along Sydney Road. Cyclists are well catered for too, with racks available and plenty of locals using bikes to get around. It fits the Brunswick lifestyle perfectly. Final Thoughts Barkly Square is not trying to be fancy, and that’s exactly why people like it. It’s a centre that works for the people who use it every day—reliable, easygoing, and quietly evolving with time. Sure, there’s room for improvement—some shops turn over quickly, and summer ventilation could be better—but overall, it remains a beloved local fixture. If you’re after convenience, community, and a calm place to get things done without the crowds or chaos, Barkly Square hits the mark.

On almost every visit to barkly square shopping centre during regular trading hours I observe people sitting or standing smoking near the entrances, often next to the no smoking signs. Center management have known about the smoking issue for years but continually ignore it!

It wasn’t located in the most upscale area, but the shopping centre had a good variety of stores.

We had a quick visit to Melbourne last week and were staying in Brunswick. We needed to go to Barkley Square Shopping Centre a few times during our stay. Besides having a good variety of shops I wanted to mention what a great job your cleaners do. Your public restrooms were by far, the cleanest and well stocked. We stopped at some real 'horror stories' on our road trip. Your cleaning staff are doing an excellent job.

Good place to do a quick shop. Good coffee at Rex cafe. A few great Asian eateries and takeaways. Good place to get massage, haircut, arrange holidays at the Flight Centre. Nice small local shopping centre.

I can't be the only person to have noticed almost immediately that it's a friggin rectangle & isn't even close to being a square - WHY THE BLATANT LIES?!? It must be said that if the lies were to stop, if a change of name to something that truly reflects the actual shape of this place, OR by simply removing any reference to shape & calling it simply "Barkly", I be inclined to lift my rating from two stars presently to 2.5 stars, maybe even three stars...

By chance I happened to come across this small shopping centre. Despite its size, it has an interesting array of stores. There is Woolworth's , K-Mart and McDonalds. A nice place to chill out. I had lunch at the Vietnamese Street Food outlet. The food was mediocre but the service was excellent. Definitely worth a repeat visit.
