Baroque Hostel

The hostel is really nice, it looks like a big house with a big kitchen. It was very clean. The staff is very nice, thanks to them for letting me check out later because I was very sick. I will come back if I pass through Budapest.

We were looking for an acommodation as students and we found The Baroque Hostel. We only booked 3 nights in order to find a long-term acommodation, but we ended up staying 1 month (and counting) because we really like it. I will enumerate some of the things we like the most: ♡ I sleep better here than at home... I've really had the best sleep here in a long time ♡ I love the vintage style here, the decorations, the walls, especially the walls in the yellow living room, where bookshelves are painted (and I'm not really sure, haven't asked yet, but I think you can ask permission to write a book title on the wall) ♡ The pressure on the showercaps is great ♡ There is a big bathroom with a big bathtub in which you can relax ♡ There is a fridge where I can store all my items and two kitchens where I can cook ♡ There is a free-to-use Netflix account and Xbox games + a football table ♡ There are plenty of spaces where you can work on your laptop or read a book, it's mostly quiet ♡ It is a hostel where you are kinda meant to meet new people, socialise, and we have met a person here that became our friend ♡ The staff has been really friendly, helpful with any question I have, they encourage us to ask any questions if we have I have really had the best experience here.

I had the pleasure to join the staff of volunteers of the hostel, and I have been here for the past month. I think it’s important to share my experience with the staff because I’ve seen some nasty comments in Booking about the receptionist/manager stating that he treats us as slaves. There’s nothing far from reality. He is very polite and kind with us, and was nothing but helpful with any inconveniences we may have had. The experience so far has been amazing and a big part of it is because the great management this hostel have. I was around the day that someone accused our manager of “bordered on verbally assaulting a guest”, and it’s not reflective of the reality. We work from 11-14, and the check out is at 11 so we have enough time to clean the rooms for the following guest. This person checked out at 13:30, so it was a big issue for us to get the space tied on time before our end of the shift. Anyway, having to explain this makes little sense, if you were at a regular hotel you would be kicked out at 11:01. To my point, don’t believe all the comments you read online, some of them are malicious just to prove an invalid point. Thanks Charles, Anita, Raj and Buyna for being there for us 💕

Answer to comment: We DID ask at the reception whether we could change beds and we were told that it was okay. The hostel itself is very cozy and the volunteers working there were really nice. Especially the communal areas feel a little bit like you are staying in a very homey flatshare. There are several kitchens and showers, which is really nice. The rooms were really hot when we were there, there‘s no AC, no mosquito nets on the windows - so be prepared to bring some mosquito spray in the summer. Unfortunately, the owner of the place was not as nice as the volunteers. He showed up one day and decided that we could not put our clothing under the bunk beds because we were staying in a top bunk (we asked the person sleeping in the bottom bunk if it was okay for them beforehand ofc). The lockers were too small to store all of our belongings (we were backpacking), that’s why we stored some stuff in the room. The staff simply took our stuff out of the rooms without asking first, which felt really weird to us. Poor communication imo. Apparently, there are bedbugs in the hostel as well. One of the volunteers told us about it. We did not see any, but it‘s better to be careful.

We had a good stay at the Baroque hostel. It was cozy and staff were very welcoming. The location isn’t great, as you have to do a long bus ride into the city centre and the hostel doesn’t offer free city transport (I say this as many other hostels do). One thing that wasn’t great was that a guest was allowed to check in at 2am. She was shown to our bedroom by a member of staff at this time, waking me and the 2 other guests up with a bright light and speaking at full volume. However overall we had a good stay, thank you!

I am careful with hostels these days after decades traveling through them in almost 60 countries. They have turned for the worse IMO. I would have given 5 stars to this hostel but the attitude of the front desk manager(?) was totally unacceptable when trying to figure out an overcharge. I ended up paying for the same night twice. $50 = 45 euros = 17,700 HUF. That ended up being for a Wednesday and Thursday night extension when it should have been three nights at about 15 euros/16 USD per night. I extended then six more nights and paid 45,687. After seeing the error I went to ask for clarification. Was shrugged off, and given no straight answer as to what the prices were supposed to be and what they charged. He clearly didnt have answers. Worse still, the guy didn’t give two shits about it after showing him my transaction records. He acknowledged the 16 euro/night price but didn’t have access to internal records apparently. “So wednesday and thursday cost $25 (8850 HUF) a night?” Shrugged and had no answer, and preferred to argue. This guy was clearly not worth the time nor frustration over 18-20 lost euros. Especially when it was likely an understandable mistake by the staff who handled my booking. So for a total of 8 nights extension I paid 63,387 HUF = 160€ = $180 USD. That comes to 20€ or 7921 HUF per night, which is even more than their current weekend rate which I believe is 19€. and the charade ends with him printing out all the details, and even circling the error without looking before insulting me. Overcharged by 20€. Well everyone can see it for themselves now. Moron.

We spent a night here with 24 kids, it is an amazing place with a great location, we loved the quirky design, beds were comfy,the bathrooms and toilets were spotless. The breakfast was plentiful and tasty. Great value for money, thank you to Federico, our night receptionists, who was very patient with our overexcited kids throughout the night 😫🙈😊

We were hoping for a comfortable and fun city break in the summer, yet Baroque fell significantly below the mark. Besides Sebastian and one other, the staff came across as unwelcoming and unfriendly. While most of the facilities are well maintained, various bedrooms lack exterior windows and proper air conditioning, making them very hot, sweaty, and humid in Budapest’s summer climate, and profoundly difficult and unenjoyable to sleep or spend time in. The hostel’s location is not close to the centre, limiting availability of nearby restaurants and tourist spots, so additional transport costs should be accounted for. Overall, you get what you pay for with Baroque, and I’d encourage anyone looking at staying at Baroque for the price to consider spending a bit more for a better quality experience elsewhere in Budapest.
