"Dreaming Over the Water on a Koala-Filled Island The sound of the ocean's waves lapping the shore greets you when you wake up at Base Backpackers Magnetic Island. As if that's not enough, this Australian hostel is located on Magnetic Island National Park, just a short ferry ride from Townsville, which is inhabited by koala bears living in their natural environment. The hostel's accommodations are standard, but the location is unprecedented. It will run you only $30 a night for a standard dorm accommodation with shared facilities, and private rooms with a double bed and ensuites are also available. In addition to the location of the hostel, Magnetic Island is a magical place that contains snuggly, sleepy koala bears nestled up in tree tops for you to discover as you hike. They blend in with the Eucalyptus trees they slumber in, so look carefully as you go through the trails: I saw 8 perched in trees (most of the time they're sleeping, as they sleep for over 18 hours each day) on my hike, including a mother with a sleeping joey on its back. If you're looking for a beautiful stay with an incredible experience in nature and are traveling on a budget, this is an amazing place to be."

Great atmosphere at this beachfront hostel. Food is great and drinks are reasonable. Party atmosphere at night with games to get the crowd going. |DJ has the place bouncing during and after the games. Easy and cheap bus access to ferry and local beauty spots. Car hire available from reception if you want to drive yourself around this island.

Beautiful location, but the place itself needs a lot of updating. There is so much potential for this hostel but it’s starting to feel a little run down. Could definitely do with some money being put into the place. The rooms need updating, as well as the bar area and bathrooms, all could do with some renovations. The staff are all lovely and super friendly, not a single one of them ever looks down or seem to not enjoy their job. Great vibe from them all. Biggest issue is there not being a liquor license past 12:00am. Very weak for a hostel and for an island where everything else shuts super early.

One of my favourite hostels on the east coast. Food and drinks are lush and a really reasonable price. Pool area and hammocks are great. Kitchen of a good size, although needs some lights in there at night. Bingo was good fun. Rooms were on the smaller end but very clean and with good air con. Only criticism is the wi-fi which is patchy and only works at super quiet times, which is annoying when there’s also no data service. But overall an amazing stay

Pros: Good location with awesome views & the rooms are cool with comfortable beds. Evening entertainment is fun! Cons: the kitchen is absolutely awful, it is way too small for the amount of people using it & therefore it’s busy and dirty. The toilets and showers are also a bit gross - doubt they hardly ever get cleaned! The WiFi only works around the bar area & the staff didn’t seem overly happy about working there!!

On the first look the hostel looks really nice, the view is amazing and it feels very luxurious to be right next to the ocean. However my experience wasn’t the best. I was unlucky with my room and was not in one of the cute houses, the hostel can’t do anything about that of course. I was in one of the rooms closest to the bar area (114). On Saturday there was a DJ and the music was so loud, my earplugs didn’t help at all. The bed was not comfortable, I felt the spirals from the mattress in my back. The AC was incredibly cold, no matter what setting it was on. I think it was way too strong for the small room. I got an extra blanket, but that wasn’t enough. There were no lockers on the whole facility to put your valuables away. I could give them to reception though to keep them in the office, but that’s not ideal of course. The WiFi was terrible and didn’t work in my room or nearly anywhere else except for the bar area.

I really enjoyed this hostel so much. It’s clean and the surroundings just looks lovely. The staff is so nice and I received very good service. An extra thank you to Ida and Annie who helped me with everything that I needed, and just made my trip so much easier. Lovely girls!

While spending a few days on the island we popped into Nomads for a beer and a bite to eat.the setting in the bar area and view out over the beach and bay is pretty special.|The drinks and food was pretty good too and came out in quick time. |Even if not staying here, it’s still worth a visit and they are a very welcoming bunch.

Brilliant Location. Hostel is located with direct access to the beach. The rooms were little huts of bunk beds and were very cosy spacious. Unfortunately the toilets were not inside the rooms therefore you had to walk to the nearest toilets. The showers weren’t the nicest however it’s nothing you wouldn’t expect from a hostel. The food at the bar was really nice.
