Base Camp at Golden Gate Canyon is everything you expect it to be and more from the overview! Nestled right in beautiful Colorado, even! & I love camping! Okay, I admit, I love ‘camping’ in parks where there are cabins with beds and air! But they have all sites, not just cabins, of course. (: I have 3 children and not one of them wanted to leave!!! (Made my sanity go a bit crazy, but says a lot when children stay somewhere for vacation and aren’t complaining and becoming bored before the end!) When we didn’t understand something they jumped to explain without being annoyed or irritated. They really hooked us up there! A little note: in my experience, and I’m sure everyone there is great, but Dillon, especially, took so much time to answer our questions show us around and ensure we had a quality time! He was so kind and has that approachable personality of someone who loves to help others and ensure you have the best possible time!! 10/10 would stop again!

Base Camp at Goldne Canyon is my place and has been for 8 years now. I love it. It's clean and nice and beautiful and the staff are very down to earth. Dillon is very attentive and nice and so is Dale as the rest of the staff. My boyfriend and I love it here. It's are place to get away and also have all the amenities that go along with it.

We will be back! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We stayed at Basecamp Campground in Golden Gate Canyon up above Golden, Colorado in June of 2025. The campground is great. Beautiful surroundings + convenience + great service and staff (Dillon and Jamie both are awesome and super helpful) the whole staff was really great. We had a fantastic stay in one the RV spots with our travel trailer. They have RV sites, tent sites and cool little cabins too. They have some solid amenities that we enjoyed having - clean showers and rest room facilities - laundry room - commercial three-tub-sink for washing dishes which was a very awesome feature to have - Free WiFi Solid picnic table, fire pit and charcoal grill - trees for hammocks - small grocery store with a good selection of food and supplies (if you forget something, they probably have one) - good coffee and sweet treats - a million hiking trails nearby (vista trailhead in Cold Springs campground had some big beautiful views) - playground and basketball hoop 5 minute walk from the campground - wildlife (a moose walked right by our site one day) - another small grocer about 5 minutes down the road - two stocked fishing ponds nearby - near Nederland, CO and Barker reservoir - wild bill’s last shot has good food a short drive down the road - short drive to Black Hawk and Central City

Overall, we had a great time, but wanted to provide some additional details so people know what to expect. 1. The marketing team deserves an Oscar in visual effects. The cabins are quite small and don't seem to be cleaned in between guests. 2. The map of cabin locale is misleading and the cabins are approximately 5 or less feet apart. Good news is you get to know your neighbor and save the day by starting their fire. Bad news is you get to know your neighbor and their unmedicated ADHD six year old. 3. The facilities are much dirtier and run down than the photos indicate. But they did have a pay to shower, which after four days of BO started to look luxurious. If you like hot water, it is hit and miss. 4. A special shout out to Ricky and his partner who worked diligently from 8AM to 10PM on pulling new electrical cable. It was great, free entertainment to watch them work and shout back and forth to each other. Their communication skills will take them far in their relationship. In sum, we actually had a great time. The cabins had electric which allowed us to plug in our cooler fridge and charge our phones. We were allowed to have a fire and had convenient access to the well stocked convenience store. The employees were all nice and respectful. We would go back.

Google
Very cute, small campground. All staff are very friendly. Bathhouse is clean and well maintained. You will need quarters for the showers, however. Theres a small convenience shop with snacks, sodsa and some minimal preparation items like charcoal and lighter fluid. We were going to tent camp but rain was forecast for all days we were here so we switched to a cabin. The cabins are cute and have grill and fire pit accomodations, but youll need chairs for yourself. Cabin was a bit dusty and there were someone else's crayons and some cheerios under the bed but overall not bad. 8/10 on the cabin. 9.5/10 on the rest of the camp for an overall 4.75/5 stars(if google would let me give partial lol). will return!!

We stopped through here because we had heard from friends that it was a nice place. Nice doesn’t begin to describe it. We stayed in one of the onsite rooms, and it was so much fun. It reminded us of when we would go camping when we were kids. Plus the store that’s there as well has everything you could need, and the staff are all very friendly and helpful. If you’re going through here, I definitely recommend trying this place.

Google
We were in a bind and needed a place to camp for the evening, maybe a little lost. The guys in the store were great. Hooked us up with a clean campsite with enough room for truck and trailer. Cozy and quiet throughout the night.

Google
The photos of the campground are very deceptive. The sites are jammed packed into one another with little to no tree coverage, and often with a walking path through several sites. Not to mention, the general store is just a gas station/liquor store. They wouldn’t let us check in earlier than 2 pm for a tent site. Yet, we arrived to small pieces of garbage and sharp metal debris all over our site. It was unfortunately too small to comfortably stake our tent without having to park the car in the neighbors’ site. Other fun delights during our stay included a wedding with music that went on past midnight, and then being woken up by screaming children at 6 am. All for $50 a night.

Yelp
Nice place! Very convenient too! By Golden Gate Canyon State Park, you never know when you're gonna need something last minute. That was me, I needed hamburger buns and they were there. Nice folks behind the counter too. Helpful and pleasant.

Yelp
Bathrooms and showers are disgusting with hair, mold who knows what else everywhere. The manager lets his dog runs wild and likes to jump on people and bite people, also jumps on cars scratching them. Manager is definitely on something. Looked like he has been up for 4 days. The old man working there talks rudely of customers and other employees. Younger employee in morning who's tall is nice definitely one of best employee there. Also the maintenance guy and his wife are great! Hard working young couple. The evening employee seemed no to really care to much about anythIng but was very nice. Have been there 2 separate times in the last 6 months and both time I have been very disappointed. I would not recommend this place for anyone with children or pets or anyone for that matter. Future guest beware. Look at review on google as well

Yelp
Weekend road trip in the area & stopped by this hidden gem, absolutely great workers here & SUPER clean bathrooms with showers in them. Will be coming back in the future!

Yelp
The cabins are really clean and comfortable to stay in! Plus the proximity to hikes in golden gate is perfect. We saw a moose while we were there which was an added bonus! Great spot close to denver for a weekend getaway. We'll be back!

Yelp
We would not recommend this campground to anyone! it was like staying at an RV park, broken down vehicles all along the west side of the campground. The men's restroom was not clean there was feces all over one of the toilets And it was not cleaned for at least a full day. very Over priced for what you get. Very disappointed.

Heidi M.

Yelp
charged for a full hook up, but had no sewers. Then dump station broke, so we couldn't even dump before we left. Tried to talk to managment to get a partial refund since we paid for something we did not receive, were told at check out they would contact us the next day as they were off site. Emailed them, have heard nothing from them. They do not have full hook ups (maybe three spots), and charge you for full hook ups anyway. We travel extensively with family close by, would of loved to make this a home campground, but that will not happen now.

Yelp
5 star rating... however we've been going to Dory Hill for years with our friends. We've planned a trip for this summer. Unfortunately, they have doubled their prices. Some of us cannot afford to go this year. Sad to see a cabin is the price of a full amenity hotel.

Yelp
We stopped for an overnight stay during our drive through the mountains. The property is well kept. Very nice full hook up set up on some sites. The regular/ long terms are on the other side of the building, that was nice. The restrooms/ showers are updated and the nicest we saw the entire trip. The showers are coin operated. The sites are a bit close together, however there are a lot of Aspens between the sites so there is some privacy. The laundry is nice and the store well stocked. Our 9 year old daughter really liked the playground. Overall great place to stay.

Yelp
Terrible experience. They put us, and our 30 ft 5th wheel in between a small bldg and the cabins- luckily it poured rain the whole 3 nights because we could not have opened our awning and sit out if we had wanted to. Do not stay in "space"4 it's basically an alley in a parking lot. I really felt bad for the people in the cabins because we were right on top of them. And the worse part is it cost us $246!!

Yelp
This was my 4th time renting a cabin up here. The location is just far enough away from the city to enjoy being outdoors. They have full showers and restrooms that are always impeccably clean. The cabins are always clean and comfortable, as well as very affordable. The staff is so nice, too. Always willing to help out or give great suggestions. I also love that they are dog friendly! I definitely be back many many more times! Thanks for the great stay!

Yelp
Love this place. It's on the outskirts of Denver so it's perfect for you to take daily excursions into different areas to discover new things. We only planned on staying one night and ended up staying three! Washer and dryer's on site as well as clean bathrooms and showers. We were going to just do the tent camping but the winds were so bad that they upgraded us to a cabin. We have had so much fun. Bonfires with Smore's, Snow fight with fresh powder, hiking and even have seen some interesting wildlife!!!! Did I forget to mention it's snowing...

Yelp
About 50 minutes from downtown Denver. I love the location. The campsite has its own liquor store, convenient store and laundromat. Surprisingly the prices at the stores were pretty good. Better than some stores in town. The shower/ bathroom area was very clean. The campsites were a little bit closer to each other than I would've liked. Our campsite was also right next to the main road so it got very loud during the day when cars and motorcycles were passing by. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here. The staff was super friendly to us.

Yelp
It's a private campground. So it's a little crowded, in terms of how dense the sites are. Ever other aspect of this facility is wonderful. They do a great job of spacing people out when it's not full. They have a large warm restroom with three separate shower stalls. They have an office / convenience store / liquor store that is thoughtfully stocked. Did you forget your sleeping bag? Towel? Fishing pole? They have almost everything. And the surprising reality is that their prices are super reasonable. They could certainly stick it to you, and they don't. For example - their ice and wood are cheaper than a couple of convenience stores we stopped at on the way up. It's a good location, close to a bunch of trail heads.

Yelp
Convenient location near Golden Gate State Park. The sites are very close together with very little space to park a vehicle. If having space between you and the next camper is preferred then look elsewhere. Many camp sites are on the side of the main road. Cleanliness not a priority in some areas. I'm 5'9" and the bed in the cabin was too short for me. Also the bed was terrible, it felt like I was sleeping directly on the plywood base.

Yelp
Love the staff at this little local store! Always helpful & smiling! Hot chocolate, yum!

Ashley L.

Yelp
Great camping experience!! Staff was awesome, the food truck they had was amazing and just all around beautiful environment!!! Will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Romulus E.

Yelp
Best experience ever. Everything is clean and organized. Staff is awesome, the store is well stocked, and the restrooms have showers and hot water. I'll definitely be back for a return trip soon. Well done.

Patrick M.

Yelp
Base Camp is a great place, it has everything you need. And has some of the nicest people I've met! The general area is great, lots of beautiful nature all around. You're spaced pretty decently far from everyone else, it smells of campfire every night. it's quiet, and all in all. It's just a welcoming place, The only complaint I have of this park, is that the showers have these mats on the floor to prevent you from slipping on the bare metal. Which is lovely, but the mats they chose are worse then stepping on legos. I recommend wearing flip-flops when you shower, because the mats literally feel like pure torture without them. Other then that, this park is awesome! And I highly recommend you stay a few nights :)

Yelp
I stayed here in the fall for one night. I would stay here again, but only in one of the cabins. It is in a pretty location, but is right off a main road. The tent site I stayed in was one that was closer to the road, and I wasn't thrilled about that. But it was easy making reservations, and it was reasonably priced, so I've happy with the overall experience. I've stayed in a couple KOA campgrounds, and I think this one is a little more crowded than others. I.e., the campsites seemed closer to each other than in other campgrounds. Maybe it's just that there aren't many trees between several of the campsites? Anyway, I was slightly uncomfortable being so squished in with a lot of strangers in our tents. I would recommend looking at the map and choosing a campsite that seems farther away from other campsites. The campground has good amenities. Our site had a good-sized fire pit and a trash can and a picnic table. The driveway was large enough for a standard truck. The bathrooms seemed to be kept pretty clean and are well-lit. The showers are good-sized. There are also some easy hikes/dirt walking paths across the road.

Yelp
The people were pretty friendly but the camping itself was very disappointing. We tried tent camping but the spots our group had were right off the main road which made it very loud and not relaxing at all. It also seems that they tried to put too many spots into a small piece of land. The tent site and the cabins were right on top of each other and the roads were hard to navigate because of the close quarters. We ending up leaving early due to these issues.

Stephen C.

Yelp
Omg! If you're a camper looking to spend a weekend camping you will be sorely disappointed. Their staff in the store were informative and polite. But outside was a different story all together. They have full time guests who were not welcoming! We had the spot next to the driveway where the locals woud wake us up at 5:30am. This is s small place that's right on the highway. The tent sites are up near the road. We had highway noise and car lights all night. Their playground looks rundown but the store is nice. In finishing: They cater to long term tennants, so when you have an issue they will side with them! We came close to calling law enforcement. It almost got out of hand. For about $50 bucks a night you should have sewer on site. We let them know how we felt as we exited with the locals waving goodbye. Not fun!

Stephanie V.

Yelp
Please be careful when going here for a camping experience, especially as a female. Golden Gate Canyon is beautiful. The campground is clean and maintained. Unfortunately, the owner of this campground can be extremely aggressive, unprofessional and rude when dealing with general campsite issues. There are rules to follow and it seemed campsites throughout the property were casually breaking them here and there, whether it was dogs wandering the campsite or not practicing social distancing, or smoking; the campsite is not 420 friendly. In the casual nature of camping, the smoking rule was broken and the owner of the camp came over to let us know it was prohibited, which is absolutely fine and fair. However, after it was expressed by a camp member that we understood and were apologetic, the owner took a step too far and entered a female campers' cabin without knocking or permission. He stood over her as she sat on the bed and scolded and yelled at this camper telling her to "shut up" when she asked questions and expressed concern about feeling intimidated and scared by the fact that he entered a rented cabin with aggression, yelling and threatening language. The owner of the campground took that situation way too far and lost his temper over what seemed to be a trivial infraction. Why an apology and acknowledgement wasn't enough is concerning. Why he entered a females' cabin without knocking or permission, yelling, standing over her bed being threatening was WAY OUT OF LINE. This situation went too far and is being further addressed through the proper channels.

Toby W.

Yelp
We decided to get away for a night in the mountains. I really didn't expect much from this place. I drive by a lot. But the experience was just awesome. The cabins are neat and clean. A little close together, but a great setup. Prices are very reasonable. The shower room is modern and clean. Bring some starter wood or fire starters to assist with getting your campfire going. It's a little tougher to do at higher elevations. We will certainly do it again.
google avatar

Seth H.

Yelp
Great price at least half the price of surrounding campgrounds. Great secluded location. Really nice general store has everything you need plus more and decently priced. Cabin was well kept and clean. Only complaint is that the tent sites were small. Very nice staff!
google avatar

Tanjila A.

Yelp
Would not recommend this for tenters. The tent sites for some reason are the furthest from the bathroom, closest to the road. Literally the road is right next to the sites. If you don't have earplugs you won't be sleeping well. Sites are also very cramped. Facilities are well maintained however.

Bobby M.

Yelp
We enjoyed our stay. The cabins were nice for our family, the staff was very friendly and helpful, and the scenery was incredible. I love the mountains of Colorado! The hot summer air was cool staying here since the elevation was higher than Golden. I highly recommend this campground.

Yelp
We were charged for our entire stay at reservation time (instead of the standard first night deposit only), and were told there would be no refunds. We were told that camp water and sewer systems were inoperable (frozen up), but were still charged full hookup rates. Access lanes were barely navigable, made worse by a giant construction pit in the vicinity of the office in which the plumbing repairs were under way. We damaged our RV (and a campground pipe, for which we were charged) trying to thread obstructed lanes to reach campsite. Power at our site was inoperable; management had to poach from resident neighbor's pylon. Site very unlevel, very muddy, and insufficient room to park tow vehicle. WiFi very balky (kept cutting us off randomly for re-authentication without actually asking for it) but usable once you figured out how to keep it happy. Restrooms were chilly and dark (but props for the hand-welded stainless stalls and the roomy showers). Night-shift residents idled diesels at all hours. Steep and winding routes to campground's hilltop location not friendly for medium/large rigs. No cell service. Won't be back.

Shelby T.

Yelp
The people who run this place are so awesome! They are super friendly and will bend over backwards to help you. Super grateful for this place!

Bee S.

Yelp
GORGEOUS! Like heaven up here. Good bathrooms with showers, supply show, reasonably quiet. Trash cans at tent site; there are cabins too.

Angela H.

Yelp
We went on a last minute trip and found this campground. We were able to book a tent site easily and at a really decent price. Once we got there it was a lot colder than we expected and they were more than willing to upgrade is to a cabin. The campground was very clean and the service was great. They have a convenience store that has everything you need and more at great prices. The only thing I would say could be better is the tent sites could be larger. All in all we will be going back.
