Yelp
My wife and I have stayed at Basecamp South Lake Tahoe before, but this was undoubtedly the worst experience we've ever had there. The only reason it's even getting 2 stars is because they refunded us for one of the nights--a bare minimum gesture that doesn't erase the issues we faced.
The Food: Let's start here because it was shockingly bad. The Nutella toast was a joke--barely any Nutella, making it a sad, overpriced piece of bread. The egg and cheese sandwich was a think layer of egg in between and English muffin and the cheese was barely noticeable. The coffee? Undrinkable, tasting more like water than actual coffee. And their "Tahoe Blue" drink, which is supposed to feature blue spirulina, wasn't even made correctly. If they can't prepare it right, they might as well remove it from the menu entirely.
The Room: Where do I begin? The room reeked of mold--an overpowering, unpleasant smell that lingered throughout our stay. It was freezing, thanks to a broken heater fan. While they did provide an extra space heater, it barely made a dent in the cold. Did I mention the room smelled like mold? Because it's worth repeating. On top of that, the noise from the pub in the courtyard was unbearable, like trying to sleep in the middle of a nightclub. in addition a car alarm right outside our window was going off for about 25 minutes at midnight, walking not just my wife and I but my daughter up as well. The bed was uncomfortably hard--so much so that even after an exhausting day on the slopes, it felt impossible to get a decent night's sleep. And the shower? A complete disaster, with pitiful water pressure that made the experience frustrating at best. When I requested extra towels, they handed us small, rough pool towels--an absurd substitute for actual bath towels.
Overall Quality: This hotel used to be a favorite of ours, but it's clear the standards have plummeted over the years. The food is subpar, the accommodations are poorly maintained, and the overall experience is not worth the price. For what we paid, we could have stayed at a Marriott or booked a far superior Airbnb. This stay was deeply disappointing, and I can't see myself recommending Basecamp to anyone in its current state.
