Casa Gangotena Hotel Review | Hotels Above Par

"The inside of the cathedral is breathtaking, and I recommend climbing the tiny spiral staircase to the bell tower for some of the best views of the city; a lovely courtyard garden offers a beautiful example of Quito’s Spanish Colonial influences." - Allie Lebos

The 13 Best Things to Do in Quito, Ecuador

"At Saint Francis Square I found the Church and Convent of St. Francis, the city’s oldest building dating to the 1500s and taking almost 150 years to complete; its Baroque design makes it one of the largest historical structures in Latin America, the plaza is huge and great for people-watching, and the site sits atop ancient Incan ruins including the palace of Emperor Atahualpa." - Matthew Kepnes

We got the tour included with Gris, she was very knowledgeable on giving us historic anecdotes about the basilica construction and it's origins.

Wonderful example of a new world colonial church. Church free museum has small charge.

This is the oldest church in Quito, dating back to the sixteenth century. The church was established and is still maintained by Franciscan monks. It is free to visit, and offers daily masses. Due to earthquakes, it's been repaired several times over the centuries. Photography is not allowed inside the church. It is the center for the Plaza de San Francisco, which is Quito's historic center. Outside in the plaza you can purchase handmade goods from local vendors, listen to street musicians or grab a snack. Our group visited with a local guide which was very helpful in understanding the history, art and architecture of this landmark. I recommend visiting the adjacent Franciscan convent and museum of religious artifacts.

The history was very obsessing to hear here. Some interesting and other parts sad but nonetheless it's a fascinating place to visit.

The plaza is where local people hangout with many street food vendors, inexpensive and delicious. However, there weren’t many places where you can sit and watch people (and drink) except on the church/plaza steps.

It started over a century ago and it still continues to getting built. Imposing and distinguishable from almost anywhere in Quito. Dont miss the tour to the upper terrace and the towers.
