The 13 Best Things to Do in Quito, Ecuador

"At Saint Francis Square I found the Church and Convent of St. Francis, the city’s oldest building dating to the 1500s and taking almost 150 years to complete; its Baroque design makes it one of the largest historical structures in Latin America, the plaza is huge and great for people-watching, and the site sits atop ancient Incan ruins including the palace of Emperor Atahualpa." - Matthew Kepnes

This is the oldest church in Quito, dating back to the sixteenth century. The church was established and is still maintained by Franciscan monks. It is free to visit, and offers daily masses. Due to earthquakes, it's been repaired several times over the centuries. Photography is not allowed inside the church. It is the center for the Plaza de San Francisco, which is Quito's historic center. Outside in the plaza you can purchase handmade goods from local vendors, listen to street musicians or grab a snack. Our group visited with a local guide which was very helpful in understanding the history, art and architecture of this landmark. I recommend visiting the adjacent Franciscan convent and museum of religious artifacts.

It started over a century ago and it still continues to getting built. Imposing and distinguishable from almost anywhere in Quito. Dont miss the tour to the upper terrace and the towers.

Beautiful church with delightful decorations. Baroque, mudejar, gothic and neoclassical styles on the same temple. Unbelievable.

Due to our busy whirlwind tour of the city, we did not have much time in here, but I wish we did! If you have the time, please allow over an hour to appreciate all the art, carvings and beauty of this church!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A breathtaking piece of history and faith ⛪✨ San Francisco Church in Quito is truly a masterpiece! The architecture is stunning—ornate altars, gold-leaf details, and beautiful courtyards that transport you back in time 🕰️🇪🇨. The sense of peace inside is incredible 🙏, and the surrounding plaza adds to the charm with street performers, local vendors, and vibrant city life 🌆🎨. Perfect for history lovers, spiritual seekers, or anyone who appreciates beautiful craftsmanship and culture. A must-visit in Quito! 📸💒💛

The Franciscan order commissioned this church and connecting convent and brewery. It faces a grand plaza also named for St. Francis of Assisi, whose portrait is on display inside the convent. Set aside time to explore every corner of the convent/musuem, brewery, courtyards, choir loft, and bell tower (not an arduous climb but be mindful as there is a lack of handrails). Great views of the plaza - filled with life - from the belltowee, and the courtyards are peaceful and meditative. The collection of Quiteño religious art (the Quito School) from the colonial period (1542-1824) is impressive and include paintings, sculptures, furniture and ceremonial objects. The preserved brewery sells a local brew in three flavors (not to my taste but out of curiosity worth the low price of a single bottle).

A beautiful church AND museum. I highly recommend opting for a tour guide (which they offer). The church consists of a few beautiful courtyards and amazing paintings. Worth a visit.
