Baby Jumping and Worm Charming: 60 of the World's Oddest Traditions

"When you enter Santa Maria del Pi, look directly to your right and you will find four giants staring back at you from inside a floor-to-ceiling glass case. These gegants are wearable puppets. They’re a highlight of parades and Catholic feast days in Barcelona and are known for their traditional dances. The largest giants are the oldest, dating from some time prior to 1601. The man is a Saracen, a medieval Muslim and the woman is a medieval lady. They were temporarily retired in 1780 when King Charles III issued a decree declaring them too grotesque for religious celebrations, but they returned in 1799 for the feast of Corpus Christi after a successful petition on their behalf and a formal pardon. The smaller giants, the petit gegants, joined in the festivities after the 1780 ban was lifted. They’re dressed as a respectable, upper-class couple and their clothing has often changed with fashion. All four giants were packed in boxes and stored in the bell tower in 1870. At the beginning of the Spanish Civil War they were moved to the city’s historical archives and then to the Monastery of Pedralbes. There they were spared during the Tragic Week of 1936 when members of the Radical Party destroyed many of Barcelona’s churches and monasteries. After the war the giants were moved back to Santa Maria del Pi and were sadly forgotten about.  In 1951 the giants were rediscovered and meticulously restored. Nine years later they were back on the streets performing in festivals. In 1985 they were given names to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their rediscovery. The Saracen is now known as Mustafá and the medieval lady Elisenda (to honor Queen Elisenda de Montcada, the foundress of the Monastery of Pedralbes.) The petit gegants are known as Oriol (for St. José, patron saint of the barrio of Pi) and Laia (a nod to St. Eulalia, the patroness of Barcelona)." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

A small unimpressive basilica that seems nobody cares. It's simple and very neat. A good place for worshipping as it is quiet and tourist free. The amazing thing for me, as a visitor passing by, is subir the bell tower, to the tip top, and get 360° stunning views, for €8.

The basilica is good and it is quite huge. It has many altars. It seems to have the thorn used during the passion of Jesus which was lost during an uprise fire in 1936. It has many altars and a few of them looks very unique like the a chapel dedicated for Mary in death bed

Ate at a tapas place right next door. Free when visited.. it was after 1830. Wow. Been to many cathedrals in Europe and this one although small, no less magnificent in its own right. Just the history of the construction throughout the Black Plague was amazing enough. Fortunate to have travelled here and visited.

Google
Very beautiful basilica in the heart of the city. Definitely recommend to drop by and even look at it in passing on a tour of the city. The ticket prices are relatively expensive just to see inside but admittedly it’s really beautiful and not exactly something you might see everyday. Not very busy for an architectural marvel so ideal for people looking to explore gothic vibes without the madness of the cathedral or similar

Google
Outstanding gothic church with a lovely little garden and three friendly resident cats that made our day. It’s a great experience to climb the spiral, narrow staircase of the Bell Tower. It’s worth it, as the views from the Bell Tower are the best in Barcelona—much better than from the overrated Catedral de Barcelona. The church is truly a gem. You can find a place for prayer there and also a place to rest in the garden.

We came in free, I heard it’s free after 6pm. Many good arts in here, worth a visit in gothic area

The Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi, located in the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, is an extraordinary example of Catalan Gothic architecture. When I visited, the experience was both serene and awe-inspiring. The basilica’s enormous rose window immediately drew my attention with its intricate designs and vibrant colors, creating a magical play of light inside. The interior, while simple compared to some other Gothic churches, had a peaceful charm, with high ceilings and tall, slender columns adding to its grandeur. I also explored the bell tower, which offered breathtaking panoramic views of the city. Walking through this space, steeped in centuries of history, was a truly memorable part of my trip to Barcelona.

I heard it’s free at 6pm but at the entrance I didn’t see any ticket information, not sure if it’s also free all day. Very beautiful and magnetic! My tour guide actually recommend to visit this one instead of the cathedral

Yelp
While not as awe inspiring as other basilicas in the area, it is still very beautiful and worth your time to take a look. I love looking at all of the old architecture. My husband and I saw this while on a tour of the Catalonia gothic quarter and since we with others we didn't really feel like we had the time to explore like I would have liked to. We plan to be in the area again next fall and I intend to spend a bit more time there. It is a working church and they were actually preparing for a baptism while we were there.

Yelp
This venerable and awe inspiring 14th century Basilica is a must see. If you like historic cemeteries, this one is 4 centuries older than the current church. You might want to take the bell tower tour, but the climb is not for those with a fear of heights like me. I did see some pictures from the top and it might be the best view of Barcelona. Being literally grounded, the high point for me was the stained glass. Four of the stained-glass windows are original and were created by one of the finest stained-glass artists of the Catalan baroque period, Josep Ravella. The basilica has the biggest rose window in Catalonia. It is an exact copy of the 14th-century original and was made by Antoni Gaudí's right-hand man, Josep Maria Jujol, after its destruction during the Spanish Civil War. I traveled with the Antifa flag from the Spanish Civil War on my messenger bag, but no one here recognized it. I highly recommend reading Zafon's Shadow of the Wind on your plane ride in, then contemplate it in this church. https://basilicadelpi.cat/en/visits/

Yelp
You'll find far fewer tourists than the Cathedral of Barcelona, and a much quieter environment than La Sagrada Familia. This beautiful interior with stunning stained glass was completed in 1453, but the foundation dates to 1319, and the cemetery dates to 1074! Come here if you want to escape the crowds and enjoy a quiet church. It might just be my favorite in all of Barcelona!

Yelp
Gorgeous church in a great location. Easy walk from the cruise ships if you are on a cruise. The architecture is amazing in the centuries old church. The statues on the side altars are interesting and have much detail. Make sure you visit each side altar as each one tells a story of a moment in time many centuries ago. Well worth taking the time to visit.

Yelp
5.2017 - BEST 360 degree view of Barcelona and it's within the Gothic Quarter. Access the tower via additional cost for a tower tour M-F at 12PM or 13:00. Weekends offer more options. BEST view of Barcelona as a whole are the Bunkers which is near Park Guell. Pi means Pine. This was originally a small church near pine trees outside the city walls. This church also has a small garden, a treasury and a crypt set up as a room with interesting information.

Yelp
Dark, heavy and foreboding compared to Gaudi's luminous Sagrada Familia Basilica the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar nonetheless warrants a look by visitors to Barcelona interested in religion or architecture, the free admission and close proximity to many museums as well as the Cathedral itself just one of the many reasons, but also to see the ornate collection of stained glass an chandeliers.

Yelp
We took a tour today with Sara and it was awesome! Sara was so knowledgeable and friendly. Our adrenaline was pumping when we made it all the way to the top. What a great experience! If you have the chance to, definitely take a tour..we are so glad we did.

Yelp
Wow totally unexpected. The church has a tour with includes a tower climb for 8.50 (euros) and totally worth it. The church and area history are explained and then your off to the tower. We felt like we were going back in time. The narrow staircase was so cool to climb. After each level they guide would let you catch your breath with more enlightening facts, then off again. Views were great. The hour or or flew by.

Yelp
Beautiful on the outside who knows how it looks on the inside it was closed everyday when I came by. But if ever open would love to see it.

Yelp
Beautiful church right in the gothic quarter. Free entry, pretty statues on the walls, great architecture. Also, to the right of the entrance they have the giants that get marched out during parades (eg la merce)

Yelp
Peaceful Gothic Church that was made and supported by the people of Barcelona. Beautiful Rose Window the size as big as the famous ones in Notre Dame in Paris, France. Not crowded and the 360 degree views from the roof were great! Small fee to do that. Ever looked down a chimney into a church below? Quite an experience.
