Santa Francesca Romana stands between the Forum and the Colosseum, built into the western portico and stereobate of the Temple of Venus and Roma. First known as Santa Maria Nova, it replaced quake-damaged Santa Maria Antiqua and was enlarged under Honorius III with a Romanesque bell tower and mosaic apse. In the early seventeenth century Carlo Lambardi refitted it as a single nave with a carved coffered ceiling and a new travertine façade. Today the church centres on Saint Frances of Rome, whose relics lie beneath the high altar, and each March motorists queue outside for a blessing almost on the threshold of the ancient Forum.
