Located in Bergamo’s Città Alta, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore was built in the 12th century. Its Romanesque-Lombard exterior contrasts with a richly Baroque interior. Originally serving as the baptismal church for the Cathedral of San Vincenzo, it stands beside the historic episcopal curia, preserving centuries of sacred heritage.

Rome - Italy 🇮🇹 The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major (Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore) is one of the four major papal basilicas in Rome and the largest Catholic church in the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Also indulgence is there for the person visiting the basilica and doing the prayers with a repentant heart. (Plz read the directions to obtain indulgence) If you’re around Rome, don’t miss this holy place ♥️🫶🏻

The most beautiful basilica I’ve ever seen. Every detail is captivating – from the tapestries and wood inlays to the gold accents, paintings, and statues. There’s a sense of harmony and peace inside that makes you want to stay longer and take in every element. You can easily spend a lot of time here just admiring the craftsmanship. The entrance is paid, but it’s absolutely worth it.

The church opens on Piazza Duomo, you can buy tickets as you enter. The external appearance has largely maintained its Romanesque origins, but the interior is largely Baroque. The choir with the wooden reliefs with Biblical tales are spectacular. We visited the church on Sunday, after the service, and it was a little crowded, but not disturbing. We also had live organ music throughout the visit, I don't know if it's like that every day, or just on Sundays. The music contributed a lot to the whole atmosphere.

A very beautiful old Church… took hundred of years to build and literally costed a fortune. History is always interesting, this place too

The church literally amazes with its interior! Every element of the interior design attracts the eye, and the more you look, the more you notice different small details. Particularly impressive are the paintings on the ceiling and arches, as if the artists' goal was to use every centimeter of space. The entrance fee is 5 euros, but just one glance for me was enough to buy a ticket without hesitation. I highly recommend visiting!
