As a paper and book artist, I had to go visit this museum and I ended up learning new things and also really enjoyed the exhibits and activities. They have different paper related activities on each floor which are suitable for people of all ages. They go in depth about the history of paper and how paper is used around the world. The ticket is for the day and there are many things to do at the museum that you could easily spend half a day there.

The Basel Paper Museum (Basler Papiermühle) offers a fascinating cultural experience, bringing the history of papermaking and printing to life. It's an excellent place for those interested in traditional craftsmanship, as you can make your own paper, explore historical printing machines, and even see vintage Macintosh computers. Interactive and informative, it's recommended for all ages!

There is so much to do here. There is a lot to learn and you get to make paper, choose wax stamps, do calligraphy, marbled paper. This was the highlight of our trip to Basel. Family with 4 kids. The Basel cards get you a discount here.

Lovely ancient building filled to the brim with interesting historical, mechanical and cultural exhibits. I spent 90 minutes here, and if you take part in the hands-on activities or with kids, you can easily spend 2 hours or more here :)

This is an extraordinary museum and a 'must' visit. Based in the old paper mill it charts the history of paper from making to printing to book binding etc. the staff were great helping to get hands on experience of many of the processes. One of the best visits we have done in a long time.

It was a great experience at Basler Papiermühle! The combination of history and the practical (do it yourself) experience is unique and outstanding. Create your own paper while being surounded by old (news-) paper machines and listening to historical facts. You will also see the first 🍏 Mac which was imported to Switzerland in 1984. It‘s definitely worth a visit in Basel!

What a wonderful place we found in Basel! A paper mill museum, where we spent many fun hours, completely unexpected! Friendly staff, for the most part, except maybe for the ticket lady who let us wait at least ten minutes while she was on the phone chatting away. But the museum has so many different activities which are interesting for the adults and super fun for the kids! (Keep in mind that it might not be super easy with very young children and you’d have to keep them close so they don’t get hurt). Make your own paper from scratch, use quills, ink, make your own calendar and paper prints, postcards and marbled paper! Hours of fun and we will definitely come back again!

Yelp
"My aim is to put down on paper what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way." -Ernest Hemingway So much interesting to see here even if it is a smaller museum. Lots of interactive displays and artisans at work. As I "write" this review on my laptop computer, I realize that paper is an art that is slowly being lost. Great little gift shop. I picked up two beautiful birthday cards (not cheap) with my daughter and my wife's upcoming "round numbers" that I hope will be appreciated. I think my friend Klaus-Dieter might appreciate their pens for sale. [Review 21228 overall - 76 in Switzerland - 193 of 2024.]

Yelp
The museum is a bit small but it was pretty interactive which I liked. We made our own paper and explained to us the methods. You can also type in the typewriter. Write some calligraphy on the different materials ie feathers, thick pencils on how they were used before. There is also marbling where they teach you how to do a paper decoration technique. All of the activities are included in the ticket but you even see them make the paper in the premise. Really satisfied overall

Yelp
Pretty nice and suggestive museum. It is perfect for families and big groups with children and teenagers. Many are the possible activities: from paper making to water marbling, the Basler Papiermühle is well known by tourists coming from all over the world. Staff members are sweet with children, patient and willing to answer new questions. I really recommend it for a nice day with the family.

Yelp
Lovely museum, that is actually still an operational paper mill today. We were told artists still purchase their paper for its unique quality. The museum offers lots of hands on activities. We made paper, from scratch! We also did marbling and printing. It was a very interesting and unique experience. There's a cafe out front so you can relax with a beer or a cup of coffee. Allocate a few hours to spend there if you want to do the hands on stuff. The museum is situated in a cute neighborhood, which would've been great to walk around and explore. Wish we had more time but we had to catch a plane back home.

Yelp
really interesting to see all the old machinery still operating and creating paper today.
