"Battery Point Lighthouse Battery Point was one of the first lighthouses on the California coast, and today its unique island spot makes for a historical visit that doesn't have to be boring. The Del Norte County Historical Society operates the lighthouse and its accompanying museum—open daily during the summer, but strictly on weekends from October to March. Notably, the lighthouse is accessible to the public only during low tide. Guests have to make their way across the land bridge, which can quickly go underwater when the tide comes in. Once on the small rocky island you can check out the lighthouse keeper's home, which has been memorialized as a museum with vintage odds and ends from the days when the lighthouse was operational. Many people also come out simply to admire the natural beauty."

Google
Best lighthouse visit, We did the tour and it was great. The staff was very friendly and very knowledgeable and seemed like they love what they do. They Kept it interesting for all ages. Even my 6 year old had fun. The wait to get in might take a while but worth the wait. 10/10 good history lesson. I would also say it's not handicap friendly the stairs are very steep. And There is a ladder to climb to get to top.

Google
Getting to the lighthouse was a bit of a puzzle. See attached map. Park and make your way toward Jetty lighthouse, before the Jetty lighthouse gates, head to the right along the beach. There is a path that leads to the paved path going up to the lighthouse. It is not wheelchair accessible. It is rocky but doable for those with young kids (Had my 4 year old). Consider the tides as it may block the rocky path to/from the lighthouse. You may end up having to walk through water. Only complaint was that the museum closed 10 minutes earlier than posted.

Google
This seaside treasure is a must-visit destination. We couldn’t see the museum as it had already closed by then, but hoping to get in during our next visit. The Cape Cod - style lighthouse with its white exterior and bold red accents looks like something straight out of a postcard. It is an epitome of coastal prettiness. Adjacent to the lighthouse, the Battery Point Beach is impressive with its rock formations and driftwood. Sturdy footwear is recommended because of the uneven terrain. This spot has a kind of magic that sticks with you.

Google
Such a beautiful place! The tour is totally worth the small fee. The view from the top was awesome and the guide family was so sweet. I would highly recommend going during low tide any day.

Google
We missed the opportunity to visit the museum and get the lighthouse tour but even walking around at sunset was amazing. Great place to visit with beautiful and peaceful scenery

Google
A very fun experience and local to Crescent City. The lighthouse does do tours, check their website for times, and it runs on donations instead of tickets. The hill side it sits on is gorgeous and fun to explore, and the art people have added is so cool. You can only get there during low tide when the water is low enough to let you cross the tide pools.

Kalysta Smith

Google
You have to go at the lowest tide, don't get caught on the island when it comes back. You have to walk over rocks and sand to get to the island, so make sure you're able to walk. It is cold and windy, so dress warm. We went after the lighthouse had closed the inside tours for the night, so there were no bathrooms. The scenery was really pretty.

Sarah Traxler

Google
Soo pretty!! We didn't tour the inside, but spoke with the keeper who was very friendly and knowledgeable. The view here was breathtaking!! It was a fair weather day, I loved poking around in the rocky tidepools! Lots of sea stars, anemone, hermit and normal crabs, and little fish!

Yelp
Battery Point Lighthouse is one of two in Crescent City, California. To visit, you need to be sure-footed, research tide times as the tide rises quickly at the point and the land bridge (a rocky seabed) to the lighthouse can disappear rapidly. The museum includes the lighthouse keeper's furnished quarters, displays of maritime photos & historical documents. Tours include a climb into the light tower. This lighthouse is a worthwhile experience while visiting Crescent City in Del Norte County, California.. *** Please remember, it's only accessible at low tide ***
google avatar

Yelp
Really neat lighthouse. Make sure you go when the tide is out. If you want to go inside, they close at 4:00 pm.

Yelp
Constructed in 1856, Battery Point Lighthouse was one of the first lighthouses built on the California coast, and is still an active lighthouse utilized to this day. This little lighthouse can actually only be accessed during low tide, so you'll have to time your visit accordingly. It's recommended that you time it when the tide is at its lowest, to make the trek easier and safer. As well as reduce the risk of getting trapped on the small island when the tide comes back in. The path to the lighthouse is loose gravel and stones, so make sure to wear appropriate footwear. And for those that might be a bit mobility challenged, to also bring a walking stick. Besides the lighthouse itself, there are a few things to see on the outside including two trees carved into the shape of a whale and fisherman, a tree full of lost buoys collected over the years, and a spot where you can trade your actual dollar for a sand dollar. The lighthouse itself is actually inhabited and maintained by volunteers who stay for a 1-month duration before they rotate out. And tours are given of the small residence at seemingly random hours. When we arrived, the doors were locked up and they were unfortunately not offering any tours at that particular time. Overall, a pretty stop in Cresent City to stop by for some quick pictures. But you'll have to time your trip based upon the tides.

Yelp
I have always had a thing for lighthouses and will go out of my way to check them out. This lighthouse was built in the mid-1800's was one of the first lighthouses on the California coast. Battery Point Lighthouse is located in Crescent City. I wasn't able to go inside it, but did make the walk up to it to take some pictures. You are able to tour it when tides are low. There is a museum here that includes furniture, photos, and artifacts from the keeper's quarters that go back to the 1850's. Tours include a climb into the light tower.

Yelp
Battery Point Lighthouse was a Lighthouse Steve and I saw while on a recent trip to California. Apparently it's been filmed and photographed considerably over the years and I can certainly see why with the slope it's on top of and trees near it it makes for beautiful photo taking. Apparently you can go to the small island and walk around there but I'm not quite sure how. Perhaps at low tide it isn't much of an island at all and you can make a stroll there but I wouldn't think all that likely. Or perhaps other arrangements need to be made in which there is a visitor center not far away and you can get all of the details there for getting there. Still even from a distance it's beautiful as well as the whole coastline along this particular area.

Yelp
The lighthouse itself is a cool piece of history, in operation since 1855-56 the Cape Cod style structure serves as one of two lighthouses watching over the Crescent City harbor. The lighthouse sits on an island that is only accessible by foot at low tide, my most recent visit was timed with that in mind. We actually had to make a couple "steps" across the rocks to get to the buildings as the tide was returning. The view is amazing, a world class spot. The building is well maintained and a crew person was working on a project the morning of my visit. If you like maritime history, lighthouses, unique island passageways or the ocean this place is worth a visit and walk over to. Check the tide schedule to plan accordingly, if you miss the low tide opening times you can get stuck on the island. 4 Stars - cool historic lighthouse 00830

Yelp
The Lighthouse is accessible ONLY during low tide! Battery Point was our main reason for our short weekend trip in the North Coast (Del Norte County). We checked the tide schedule prior to our visit. The lighthouse was built on a small islet, connected to shore by this isthmus, and was only accessible at low tides. We arrived around 10:00a and we were able to cross to go to the lighthouse. It's different times every day so research before your visit so you can maximize your time at the lighthouse. There are no public restrooms at the park. Restrooms are located near the parking lot. The lighthouse was open for tours but can only accommodate a few people at a time. There were 6 adults and 2 kids in our group. The tour was given by a a husband and wife team who were the volunteer caretakers for the month of February. Each month would have a different caretaker(s). A donation of $5/adult and $1/child was suggested. The lighthouse is a Cape Cod style with a cylindrical tower. We learned so much about the lighthouse and the property. Ask about the rocking chair in the the room dedicated to Wayne Redrick Piland, Battery Point Light Keeper from 1946-1953. Cool part also is going up to the tower where the modern 375mm lens replaced the fourth-order Fresnel lens in the lantern room. We ascended a spiral staircase and up a short ladder to an opening... there we had magnificent views of the mighty Pacific Ocean. The fourth-order Fresnel lens used in the lighthouse is now on display along with historic photos and other lighthouse memorabilia. This was the lens that was in place during the 1964 tsunami that devastated Crescent City. We left after spending 1-1/2 hours at the park (around 11:23a) before the tide started coming in. Returned at 3:00p, the parking lot was empty except for a few visitors. We walked down towards the lighthouse to view the rising water from a distance. The lighthouse park closes at sunset. Very cool lighthouse experience. Review #2523

Yelp
A beautiful spot and a piece of history. If you are looking for a tour, the Lighthouse is only open for an hour a few times a week. We missed the tour unfortunately. A walk across a small rocky beach and then up a short driveway is necessary. The lighthouse is 175 years old and meticulously cared for.

Yelp
Super cool site we visited while staying in Crescent City for a night. We drove along the beautiful Pebble Beach, then ended up at the cute little lighthouse, that is still active. The resident keeper told us quite a few stories about this lighthouse. He was quite friendly and let us know they alternate keepers monthly, and are currently looking for volunteers. As others have stated, you have to time a visit during low tide. We lucked out. We visited a little after 9am and it was clear to walk all the way up, but as we were leaving, about 30 minutes later, the tide was coming in and we walked across some rocks to stay out of the pool of water forming. Pretty neat adventure! Overall we loved visiting this lovely lighthouse. The views were beautiful too. Lots of photo opportunities. The painted driftwood whale was super cool! Would highly recommend.

Yelp
Battery Point Lighthouse is different than most lighthouses in the U.S.A. Visits to this lighthouse are only possible during low tide. Whenever we go to Crescent City we always try to visit the lighthouse. Each time, we failed because it was high tide. Finally, last month we succeeded in walking across to the little island to see the lighthouse up and close. The fifth time was a charm! Unfortunately, due to the covid pandemic, there were no tours being conducted. That was okay, though, because we still enjoyed touring the tiny island and exploring the area around the lighthouse. Battery Point Lighthouse was worth the wait for us! Such a beautiful and charming lighthouse! Easily one of my Top 5 lighthouses of all-time!! If you are lucky to be in Crescent City during low tide, then you are in for a treat. Walk the short distance (approximately 200 feet) to the island for a closer look at Battery Point Lighthouse. Loved it and maybe you will too!

Yelp
Check the tides before making your trip! You walk through tide pools to get here, what an adventure! There are a few well situated picnic tables here and breathtaking views (assuming the fog has lifted) and a quaint garden. Inside the lighthouse they will give you a tour, which I can only describe as generous. Volunteer lighthouse keepers stay for a month at a time and are basically welcoming you into their home to tell you the history of the structure and of the lives of keepers past. We got to climb the curvy winding steps and then crawl up a ladder to see out the light area--I have never been allowed this high while visiting other lighthouses. If you are in the area and the tides are in your favor, this is a must-see.

Yelp
Such lovely people staying at the working lighthouse. So informative and a beautiful view.

Yelp
I took a walk out here in the mid-afternoon when the tide was low. It's a very cute lighthouse with stunning views. If you're there at the right time of day, it's definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
This was a stunning lighthouse to go visit and I am so glad we did! At low tide, you can walk out to the lighthouse and walk around the grounds. The lighthouse keepers were kind enough to come and ask us if we wanted a tour and spent 45 minutes showing us all the ins/outs of the lighthouse, even bringing us to the very top. I felt bad we didn't have any cash to leave a tip. Beautiful views of the ocean from this point. Worth the adventure if you are in Crescent City!

Tammie F.

Yelp
Historical lighthouse that is maintained and ran by volunteers and donations. Wonderful people from the community keep this place up by volunteering. Make sure to plan your visit according to the tide. The island is only accessible at low tide and the inside of the lighthouse is only accessible for guided tours if low tide is between the hours of 10-4. The monthly schedule is on their Facebook page. Even if you are unable to go inside, it is a world class view-absolutely gorgeous. It's worth more than $5 for the tour. It's full of many pieces of history, in stories of the lighthouse, the people who ran it over the years and the areas surrounding it. Would give it 10 stars if I could!

Yelp
Beautiful lighthouse in Crescent City , Ca , today a 30 mph wind was blowing and the temp is 55 deg, lighthouse is closed due to covid but you can walk out to the island, dress warm! Super pretty, highly recommend

Yelp
Early morning, best time to go. Worth going if you missed op due to high tide. Volunteers man light house, tour is worth donating but space is very tight up in the light house.

Yelp
Wanting to feel like we were at the absolute edge of the northern California coast, we trudged out to Battery Point Lighthouse. Being that it was the off-season, there really wasn't much to it besides exploring the grounds around the lighthouse. There was a significantly grumpy looking man who we later found out lives at the lighthouse. But other than that we enjoyed taking in the view. There was plenty of parking but just be mindful of the tides. Apparently during high tide you cannot get back to the parking lot because the pathway is underwater.
google avatar

Kislev A.

Yelp
BATTERY POINT LIGHTHOUSE is very picturesque sitting out there on its own little island. Although we didn't get to visit the lighthouse during our visit because it was high tide, and the water was freezing cold so we couldn't wade in either, we could see from the beach that this lighthouse is in very good condition. Also, how unique is this lighthouse's visiting situation? The road leading to the island on which the lighthouse sits is submerged in water during high tide. When the tide is low enough, you can cross over and visit the lighthouse. The website says they even have tours. There is a free parking lot for visitors and it's not too far from the beach. This is the beach you will walk from and along the driveway to the island if the tide was low.
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
We haven't hiked out to the Lighthouse itself yet, but have gone to the beach next to it. That is on our list. It is gorgeous out there and the surf is nice to watch.

Yelp
Visited today and enjoyed the area and the good views of the ocean and the city. It's great to see these landmarks
google avatar

Aaron T.

Yelp
Great place to check out the ocean, exotic sea life and one of California's historic lighthouses. The LighthBe sure to check the tide schedules to cross over and back during low tide, otherwise you may get stuck on the island.

Jessica B.

Yelp
Lighthouses are fabulous Historical landmarks Careful of high tide Plan accordingly safely The hike is amazing Photographs are stunning Visit this great simple treasure
google avatar

Cool G.

Yelp
It is a unique lighthouse because it is built in a small island that is separated from the coast most of time by sea water. Only certain time of the day and season, people can walk to the island without stepping into water.
google avatar

Shirley N.

Yelp
We visited the lighthouse itself, not the museum. We went twice back to back days and missed the tour both days. It was fun nevertheless crossing over on foot during low tide and back. The lighthouse is a California historic landmark. It's perched on a tiny hilltop. Great views of Crescent City and of the Pacific Ocean from the top. Check online for the tour schedule as you can only cross over on low tide.
google avatar

Arielle D.

Yelp
Great views! You can only get up there at low tide so make sure you time it right and don't get stuck.

Yelp
Built in 1856, Battery Point Lighthouse is a sight to see in the coastal town of Crescent City. Just a short drive from the California Redwoods and Highway 101, sits one of the most beautiful lights on the California Coast. A perfect day trip if you are staying in nearby Klamath, to relax and breathe in some fresh ocean air, and sit and listen to the beautiful sound of the fog horn. A well preserved historical landmark, Battery Point is also said to be one of the most haunted places in California. There have been at least three ghosts who have been reported to reside there, so if you plan to explore the grounds, you may experience a little more history than expected. Note: This is a private residence Open Monday-Sunday 10am-4pm

Kenny D.

Yelp
Amazing views of the ocean! We went on a lighthouse tour, it was totally worth it. Most of the time I am not a big fan of touring historical sites, I just want to look at things on my own. The battery point lighthouse tour was an exception for me. The lighthouse keepers were great and shared some really cool history. It made me interested to consider being a lighthouse keeper in the future, something I would have never thought of doing.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Crescent City holds a very special place in my heart so I am biased to giving good reviews for just about everything in the general area. The lighthouse is no exception. Its a majestic place to take in the vastness of the Redwoods and the ocean. Its connected to the pier and offeres a good spring board to see the plethora of dolos used a sea-break. I find it to be a very relaxing spot with qualities that cannot be found elsewhere.

Madilyn P.

Yelp
BEAUTIFUL!! Loved the adventure climbing through the water and rocks to get there. The lighthouse is gorgeous plus there were pink flowers that made everything pop!!

p c.

Yelp
If you don't stop and walk out to the light house then you missed out. As many people say, watch the water. It is tidal so at lower tides you can walk out, might be a little water but you can walk on the rocks. BUT don't try to go out when the water is going over the rocks! That being said, the little bluff has great views and if the light house is open you might get a tour and go up to the light. Warning, IT IS VERY NARROW and you HAVE TO CLIMB A LADDER THROUGH A SMALL OPENING.
google avatar

Tammy B.

Yelp
Would have loved to have taken the tour other yelpers mentioned. No road. No signs warning you, no road.
google avatar

Paul P.

Yelp
Breathtaking views really gorgeous never been up here before first time I suggest this to everyone come and see it if you get a chance you will be blown away
google avatar

Yelp
A neat and cheap attraction. It's accessible only at low tide so call before you go. Sign up for the tour as soon as you get on the island. Space is limited and they can shut tours down without notice if the tide starts coming in. They have a no pictures policy inside the lighthouse, except at the top. There are lots of signs and they are watching to make sure you don't take any pictures. People asked and were told that this is so people don't document their security measures. What? You mean like the 1970's era motion sensors? Not sure I believe this, as did the other people. There is not much in there that one could easily walk off with. Pictures are allowed at the top and it was worth the wait.
google avatar

Leese R.

Yelp
Beautiful little lighthouse! The tour was so informative, and the view was spectacular! Unfortunately, they will not allow picture taking inside the lighthouse. I got some beautiful pics outside tho. The history was intriguing and the volunteers were so kind. We had to leave the dogs at the car, so that kept me wondering about their safety. A must see! I plan on going back very soon!
google avatar

Charles A.

Yelp
Shockingly beautiful. Sadly the tours weren't running today but we did go out and walked around the grounds. One word of warning: The grounds are only accessible during low tide. Time your visit accordingly. More than worth the third mile or so walk. Also be sure to check out the tidal pools for cool things...I saw a Dungeness crab!
google avatar

Marisa B.

Yelp
What a wonderful beach to stop by. Awesome to be able to see the light house. Such a peaceful beach, with so few people. My favorite. I was actually sitting down doing paperwork and had chipmunks coming up to me for food. It was so cute! Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of them. :( Although we even got to see seals.

Yelp
I remember Battery Point Lighthouse vividly - I came across it on my first stop during my month long Pacific NW trip from SF through OR/WA to Whistler. Unfortunately, my car battery died on the very first night but luckily it went out in the city I was planning to stop at anyways and furthermore, it worked out for the best because all my other immediate stops were up in the mountains in the snow. The lighthouse itself is accessible during low tide only but there is not much to see once on the island or in the lighthouse. The best view is from the parking lot during sunset. I love sunsets and lighthouses so I view it as karma that my car battery died at sunset at this very lighthouse. The main draw is having the ocean as the backdrop for your photos since the lighthouse itself is not as spectacular as other ones north and south of here but worth a quick stop if you are in the area.

Karen S.

Yelp
Nice little hike up to the light house. Great views. Tours are closed for COVID, but the lighthouse keeper did a talk on the steps with a question and answer session. Very informative. Definitely make some time to visit.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
A nice lighthouse with pretty good historic exhibits. Most of the furniture isn't original or period, and the text on the displays didn't always match what the volunteer lighthouse keepers told us. Check ahead on the tide schedule for access, which is only possible at low tide.
google avatar

Natalie J.

Yelp
A lovely little lighthouse which is very much worth going for a visit. But be warned; call ahead to see if they are having the tour. Even though there were tours scheduled for the day and we showed up at the tour time, there were a bunch of people waiting and the lady says that they can only take two more people and that it would be the last tour of the day even though it was only 11am; due to the fact that the tide might rush in. They had given a tour earlier before the scheduled times that morning. So they really give the tours based on the tides. The lighthouse is accessible only when the tide is out but when the tide is in you would have to wade back to get ashore. And sometimes the tides can be unpredictable if a storm is brewing. We called really early the next morning and she said that there would be a tour at 9am which was earlier than the first posted tour of 10am. It was worth waiting and seeing the lighthouse tower. Go with a sense of adventure and you won't be disappointed. There are no restrooms for the public and there is a public parking lot with a handful of parking spaces at the beach.
google avatar

Kristina K.

Yelp
Battery Point Lighthouse is a must see when driving through Crescent City. Unlike the other famous lighthouse that's 9 miles out to sea (St. George Lighthouse), Battery Point is accessible by foot. Their reasonably priced tour is about one hour long and includes sought after views on top of the lighthouse. Volunteers have the unique opportunity to be lighthouse keepers. Even if you don't take the tour, just walking the lighthouse grounds is worth the trek. The lighthouse is private property and does not allow pets on their premises.
google avatar

Faith F.

Yelp
The walking path to the lighthouse can be quite dangerous if you go at any other time of day other than low tide. This results from the fact that the path is located between the sand area of the beach and the ocean. During high tide, the water from the ocean fills the walking path, which could mean you'll be washed into the Pacific. Well, I lived to tell about it as I went during low tides. It's a nice trek up the hill and the view from the top is stunning.
google avatar

Erin H.

Yelp
It's a lighthouse. It's special in that it's only accessible at low tide. It's also a private residence and that makes me wonder how the people who live there live their lives if they can only come and go twice a day. Weird. Know that the grounds are not dog friendly. You can walk them just up to the top of the hill but that's where you'll have to wait it out.
google avatar

Kathy H.

Yelp
One of our favorite parts of the day at Crescent City. We happened to get there at low tide, which you need, to get to the lighthouse. The walk up was beautiful and seeing all the sea lions play in the water was fun. For $3 a person you can take a tour. FYI:There are volunteers who give the tour and run the lighthouse for a month. The light keeper let us know it was his first day. He has been on the waiting list for three years!

Amy P.

Yelp
Great tour! We only had an hour of low tide to be there, but it was worth it. Loved learning about the lighthouse keepers and the history of the shoreline with its taunamis

Jesse S.

Yelp
who doesnt like old light houses? beautiful views , very picturesque .

Yelp
Gorgeous coastal waters. Nice hike up the hill to view the old New England style lighthouse, with a pretty array of flowers, berries and succulents alonf the way. Excellent place for pictures and fun for kids to walk the rocky areas to look for crabs, shells and pretty stones.

Yelp
One of my most favorite lighthouse in NorCal coast! It can only be accessed during low tides! The history of this lighthouse is very interesting! It has an amazing view of the coast and surroundings are well maintained!
