In the mid-1980s, Parks Canada sponsored an underwater archaeology project to recover the French frigate Le Machault, which was scuttled there in 1760 when it encountered a Royal Navy squadron of superior force. Secrions if Marchault, including its rudder, stem, main mast step and bilge pump, and a gun port were excavated and put on display. The ship's cargo was well preserved and is also on display. The curators did a nice job of placing the whole find in context: the great power competition of the French and British, the rivalry of Louis XV and George II, and the settlement of lower Canada.
