Battlesteads Hotel & Restaurant

We stayed one night in a lodge room to include an evening meal and breakfast. We cannot speak highly enough about our stay. Everything was immaculate, comfortable and so much thought had been put into every little detail to make the customer feel pampered. We are so glad we celebrated our special wedding anniversary there. I can't wait to go back again.

Fantastic stay in a gorgeous dark skies setting. We stayed in one of the luxury lodges and we couldn’t fault it - spacious, comfortable, warm, a huge bed and fabulous en-suite bathroom. The food in the restaurant was out of this world, particularly the 8-course taster menu. Friendly, helpful staff throughout our stay. And the added bonus of having an observatory on site to to add to the experience, Will definitely be returning.

Just had an excellent 3 nights in an accessible room. My husband is in a wheelchair and found everything suitable for a comfortable stay. Room on the ground floor was an excellent size, the bathroom was brilliant and so convenient. Whole hotel is spotlessly clean and staff very friendly and helpful. Food is superb and well presented. We will certainly be back, hopefully in the summer so that we can sit out in the amazing walled garden

Very pleasant short break at the Battlesteads Hotel in this lovely part of Northumberland.||Friendly reception and given a first floor room. Comfortable room within a generally old building with history. Fresh fruit a nice touch on arrival. Loved the jacuzzi bath and bathroom products.||Enjoyed the 8 course taster menu. Well put together with delicious local products in the main. Waitress knowledgable, introducing each course and able to explain the ingredients. Didn’t go with pairing wines but enjoyed our own selection from the wine list at more modest cost.||Dining room felt a bit Spartan - table cloths for example would have been nice. In busier periods the feature conservatory would be used as it was for breakfast and that would no doubt have a nicer ambiance. Breakfast was lovely, particularly the Northumbrian platter. Toast would have been appreciated but probably an item we should have requested on the supplementary menu. ||Quiet time of year so ample lounge space.||Will be nice when weather closes in and log burner is lit.||Didn’t book or considered the dark skies observatory but reviews of its use are good.||Battlesteads well located for Roman Wall and for Kielder reservoir visits. (Recommend Tea on the Train in Bellingham and the interesting Heritage Centre attached).

We have stayed at the Battlesteads Hotels on several occasions, it never disappoints! For this visit we were in a lodge across the car park from the main building, and it was spacious, well heated, comfortable and provided everything needed for an enjoyable stay. The hotel is very eco-friendly and has won awards for its approach. Ideally located for visits to Hadrian's Wall and Kielder Water or take a walk around the local area (with helpful maps provided by the hotel).||Meals are delicious and well presented, with much of the produce supplied by local traders or from the hotel's own gardens and smokehouse. The bar has a good range of drinks, including a selection of real ales and whiskies. Dogs are welcome in a separate dining area and the bar itself.||The staff here are fabulous - welcoming and helpful.||Overall an excellent and enjoyable visit, we will be back in 2026.

Loved our 2 nights here, the staff are all so friendly and so efficient. Our room was cosy, very clean and supplied with a great selection of beverages & biscuits, toiletries also. Restaurant was top notch, husband has steak wherever we go, the fillet steak was one of the best he'd ever had, overall a fantastic stay and definitely can't wait to return.

What a lovely find. An older style hotel in a lovely Northumbria village.We were on a two night break and could not have been happier so much so we have booked to return for my wifes birthday in December. The staff were very welcoming and helpful both in the restaurant and the hotel itself. The food was outstanding - 8 course tasting menu on the first night and then dishes from the normal menu the second night. All were of a very high standard as were the breakfasts which are cooked to order rather than a buffet. If you want water at the table they do charge a pund but I do not fall out with this as that £1 goes to a water aid charity . The rooms were well furnished warm, with a comfy bed and plenty of room to walk about. The in room tea/coffee was excellent in that they provided sachets or little cartons of various types of milk. (the biscuits in the room were fab). The hotel is in close proximity to many tourist places like Kielder Water and Hdrians Wall. The village in on the banks of the North Tyne. Ideal for walkers cycloists and general touring. Excellent.

We used the hotel in conjunction with the Dark Skies Observatory. Excellent accessible room with some very thoughtful extras - e.g. oat & soya milk available for use in tea/coffee. A tad expensive, but worth it for a very enjoyable stay.

We stayed at the Battlesteads Hotel in August 2011 while walking Hadrian's Wall. Prior to the start of our walk, we were informed that when we reached Chesters Roman Fort and Museum, we should call the Battlesteads, and someone would pick us up and drive us to the hotel. However, when we called we were told it would be at least an hour before someone could come by, a bit off-putting considering we had been walking for several hours and simply wanted to shower and relax. We ended up hitching a ride with a tour group who was also staying at the hotel (we met their very kind bus driver at the tea room at Chesters), and were shown to a very small room that overlooked someone else's front yard. The room itself was comfortable, but so small there was no where to put our luggage. We simply had to step over our suitcases to move to either side of the bed. The bathroom was a bit of a surprise because it had a more modern look, complete with gray, rubbery floors. It certainly did the job, but the accommodations were not posh by any means (and I was not expecting luxury). After our showers, we had a few drinks in the garden before meeting a friend for dinner in the pub. The garden was lovely - the flowers were still very much in bloom, and a wooden fence around the property provided privacy from neighbors. It's my understanding that the pub uses fruits and vegetables grown in the garden. Dinner, on the other hand, was not what I expected from an award-winning pub (my partner informed me that the Battlesteads was "Pub of the Year" in 2010). The hake and chips was rather bland and the mushy peas did not boost the flavour profile. It seemed to me that Battlesteads was trying too hard to appear cosmopolitan, rather than focusing on good food and flavour. I appreciate locally sourced food, but it has to taste good as well.

This place is lovely- my mother and I stayed last summer for just one night, and I wish it could have been longer. We had a nice twin room- slightly dated but very clean and comfortable, I suppose you'd call it quaint. The bar areas were very comfortable, but it's the food that really got me. I surprisingly had the nicest fajitas I've tasted! They also had a great selection of local cheeses. The waitstaff are all very knowledgable about the food and wine, and were more than happy to advise. We really enjoyed our stay, hopefully we'll be able to come again.

We are from Texas . We stayed here with our friends from London, while hiking the wall. The hotel staff went above and beyond in their services. The staff was cheerful and extremely helpful. Denisa took care of us, as did the rest of the crew in the restaurant. We would stay here again.
