Batu Batu, Tengah Island, East Coast, Malaysia - Explore & Book

"Sunlight danced on the waves as we sped across the South China Sea, weaving around wooden fishing boats and away from the bustling port of Mersing. Stepping off the boat at our destination 20 minutes later, we were awe-struck by the dazzling blue of the shallows, the pure white of the sand and the deep green of the jungle; put simply, Pulau Tengah (‘Middle Island’) is as close to paradise as we’d ever come.Hugging a stretch of the 3km coastline, between thriving coral reefs and swaying coconut palms, Batu Batu is the only resort on the otherwise uninhabited island. Its 22 traditional Malay villas were built by local carpenters; some have 1 bedroom, others annexes for children, but all are quietly luxurious, with four-poster beds and huge tubs. The vibe throughout is relaxed, and as we explored we saw kids playing in the infinity pool and couples lingering over cocktails in the bar. We spent our time immersed in nature – swimming with reef sharks and clownfish, releasing turtle hatchlings into the surf, and sunning ourselves on near-deserted beaches. We’d also intended to scuba-dive with the on-site PADI school and spoil ourselves in the spa, but for that we'll have to return; it transpires 3 nights in paradise just aren’t enough. Highs Barefoot luxury in a truly unspoilt setting – and a commitment to protecting the island's natural beautyA friendly, laid-back ambiance: we felt ourselves start to unwind the moment we stepped off the boatDelicious, daily-changing meals in the restaurant, some using ingredients grown on the islandA huge array of activities: paddle boarding, scuba diving, PADI courses, jungle walks, kayaking, spa treatments Manager MacNeil and his team go above and beyond, always with huge smiles Lows A trek to get here (a 3-5 hour drive from Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, followed by a boat transfer), but oh-so worth itFull pre-payment is required, and rates don't include any food (you'll need to buy a separate meal plan)WiFi is limited to some communal areas, although we enjoyed the digital detoxThere are mozzies and sandflies, plus occasional jellyfish in the sea (you can buy a special jellyfish repellent)It's a 15-minute walk from the furthest villas to the pool and restaurant" - Emily McDonnell

Island escapes easily reached from Singapore - SilverKris

"A single-resort offering on a privately owned island that mimics a traditional Malay village, with 22 timber villas that face either sea or jungle for privacy and tranquillity. The property highlights eight sandy beaches and clear waters with multiple dive sites (around 15), spacious stonewashed bathrooms, and a restaurant serving European and Asian cuisine. Activities include snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, island trekking and diving, and the resort runs conservation programs—most notably a sea turtle protection initiative." - Claire Knox and Levin Tan

Stayed 4 days here with the family and the service was fantastic to say the least. From the moment we arrived till the day we left, we were tended to by the most welcoming, friendly, attentive and helpful employees. Notable employees we had wonderful conversations with were Benny, Sam, Mimi, Nizal, Joji, Gulfam, Danica, Iz and Sebastian. Hats off to the housekeeping staff also who came at least twice a day to tidy the room. Before even leaving we were already planning on another trip here! Beautiful beaches, great food and gracious hospitality all make this the perfect island getaway. It was worth every penny.

Batu-Batu is a beautiful place—like a hidden beach paradise surrounded by lush greenery. It’s not luxurious in a typical high end resort way, but it has its own unique charm.||There’s no Wi-Fi and no room service, which might seem like a downside at first. But it actually turned out to be a blessing. Without phones and internet, we spent so much quality time together as a family—playing games, swimming, walking by the beach, and just talking. It was truly refreshing.||The restaurant serves food throughout the day—breakfast is a simple buffet, while lunch and dinner are à la carte. ||The cabins are lovely and spacious. If you're coming with family, I’d suggest booking a beach villa instead of a jungle one—it’s much closer to the restaurant and easier to access. The beach villas also offer direct access to the sea, which makes mornings especially beautiful.||Don’t expect luxury service here—it’s an eco-resort, so they keep things simple and sustainable. You’re mostly on your own, but that becomes part of the experience!||By the second day, we appreciated the simplicity—it helped us slow down and truly connect. Bring books, games, and activities for the kids, and you’ll have a wonderful time.||The beach, sand and solitude was truly one of a kind!||I’d definitely return. It’s special in its own way.

From the moment we arrived, we were blown away by the warmth and attentiveness of every staff member – from grounds crew to housekeeping, restaurant, and spa staff. Everyone went out of their way to make our stay feel special.||The snorkeling right off the beach was incredible – vibrant coral and marine life just metres from shore. Our villa was spacious, beautifully designed, and incredibly comfortable.||The food was a real highlight: an amazing variety at every meal, catering to all tastes with fresh, delicious options. For the quality of service, experiences, and comfort, it’s exceptional value for money. We’re already dreaming of our return.

The most luxurious island resort here in the state of Johor Malaysia. It’s located on this beautiful island called Tengah island. It’s very pricey but totally worth it! The island has multiple beaches with white sand , and water crystal clear. The marine life is so alive and amazing, they practice marine conservation on the island. You will find your own patch of beach to yourself. The cabins are so big and so nice, all the creature comforts you will need. The restaurant has very good food, a well stocked bar too! The customer service is on point! Worth every penny we spent! They have a very nice swimming pool too. You can go on a hike around the island and observe the wildlife in the forest and the trails end by the beach! If you want to experience paradise with peace and quiet but you have money to spend, Batu Batu island resort is the place to go!

We spent 2 weeks here and we loved it! Particular highlights are the child friendliness, the very attentive staff, excellent cuisine, the relaxed atmosphere and the breathtaking island and beach! Enjoy snorkeling in front of the villa, see octopus, rays, anemone fish, huge fish schools, etc.

We have stayed at many resorts in Malaysia and this one really stands out. Idyllic scenery, natural beauty, well laid out resort with good amenities and an intimate size which makes it feel exclusive and|private. The food was great and the service from the friendly and profesisonal staff was amazing. The manager Benny was very welcoming and caring. Highly reccomended.
