ANDERSON VALLEY CITY GUIDE

"Baxter Winery is a small, quality-oriented Pinot Noir producer located on a coastal ridge-top above the Anderson Valley in Northern California. We produce 2000 cases of single vineyard wines (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay as well as some hard-to-find varieties), all using traditional techniques, neutral oak and wild yeast. We produce world-class wines that consistently gain excellent reviews. We hold our tastings down in the valley below, at our mid-century modern tasting room site, located in Philo in the heart of the Anderson Valley on route 128."

Nice wine tasting. Cute, dog-friendly outdoor area, but as others said, no view of the beautiful Anderson Valley. $15 tasting fee with no discount for bottles purchased.

Went here in May 2022 during the Anderson Valley pinot noir wine festival. We did a food pairing and met the owners. Had an absolutely amazing experience. The wine was fantastic and the owners were charming. For the size of their production I was surprised at the obvious quality and how well crafted the wines were. Bought a bottle of our favorite but honestly we've been thinking about this place all the time since then. The wine was just too good. Now we're in that predicament where we decide of we want to replace a wine membership to add Baxter or if we just decide we need to drink even more wine to make room for abother membership. I suppose we can lean into that if it means getting more of this pinot!

THE BEST WINE IN ANDERSON VALLEY. A must-stop for any wine lover on your way through. Claire and Philip are lovely people and make you feel right at home in the tasting room

On website it read they require reservations but when I drove by they were open and were empty. Only an older male and younger male there manning tasting room. I asked if could do a tasting, they said they were only open for sales. Not welcoming at all. Never again.

Wines were very unique and tasty. The outdoor seating wasn’t our favorite, no view. :(

Yelp
Great representation of Anderson Valley pinots! Made a tasting reservation for a group of 4 at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon. While we were tasting, a few walk-ins dropped in, but otherwise, it was fairly quiet and had lots of time to talk wine with Mark! In my opinion, the Pinots were an excellent representation of the best Anderson Valley has to offer! Weir and Oppenlander are two of my favorite vineyards, with classic umami and strawberry plum notes characteristic.of the region. I was unfamiliar with Langley vineyard, but it was also a delicious Pinot with more of a bing cherry cola flavor. Overall, we enjoyed Mark's company and local wine knowledge as well as the wines themselves. Our group ended up purchasing 3 bottles - one each of the pinot noir! Worth a visit if you're in Anderson Valley wine tasting!

Yelp
Mike was great! We enjoyed all the wines we tasted. The Oppenlander wines were our favorites! Would definitely go again!

Yelp
Can't wait to return to C.A. Post Covid-19. Until then have to be content with the photos from our favourite tasting room, Baxter's in Philo!

Yelp
Was very happy to get in as they'd just reopened after the shelter-in-place. One disappointment in that I booked here due to the Italian varietals they make, but none were being served. It was one Chard and all Pinots. They were all delicious and high quality. I'd likely have gone here anyway, but it would have been good to communicate what was available, since my booking mentioned the varietals of interest. That said, this is a great spot with top tier wines.

Yelp
I'm in the wine business and am a fan of Phil Baxter and his wines, so I was intent on visiting the tasting room during our trip - my first one - up to Anderson Valley. This is a spot to visit if you are serious about wine - it's not about the view or the wine-related souvenirs they sell in the tasting room. The tasting room is in a little building right on the highway in Philo, and they are using a covered patio with a couple picnic tables as the tasting area due to COVID restrictions. So there is no view or fancy frills - but we didn't go there for that stuff. We went to taste good wine - and we were not disappointed! Mark, our host, was extremely knowledgeable - not just about the Baxter wines, but Anderson Valley and wine in general. He was great. As far as the wines go, the thoughtful winemaking shines through - the excellent fruit sourcing, the use of native yeasts, hand punchdowns, use of only neutral oak...these are honest and delicious wines. Just the kind of wines I love to drink! Glad we were able to visit. I look forward to drinking more Baxter wines in the future! As a side note, we hired a driver to take us out to the Harbor House Inn for dinner - and he's well connected and well versed in the local scene. He said that he has friends in the restaurant and wine business and Baxter is one of the wineries that they all think is one of the best in the region. I agree!

Yelp
Off the main road in Philo. This has a modern and upscale feel. Feels like a wine shop you would find in West Hollywood. Their wines are delicious and the server was knowledgeable. They are on the pricier side and charge a tasting fee, stands out from the other wineries in the area. This was a quick wine stop, but thoroughly enjoyed.

Yelp
Went to Anderson Valley recently for the first time and this was my first stop with some friends. We were met by Phil and his wife Claire who run this wonderful little winery on top of a lush, green, tree filled hill overlooking part of the valley. They were super welcoming, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable with wine. We did a private tasting with them and wow, their wines are just phenomenal. There was a barrel that was not quite done but Phil gave us all a small tasting and it may just be the best wine I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. Too bad it wasn't ready yet because I would have wanted to purchase the entire barrel! I think I may have to switch it up from my Cab and Malbec staples and stick to Pinot Noir's after visiting Baxter Winery! I will definitely be back to visit them next time I come up to Anderson Valley and you should too! Tastings are by appointment only but definitely give them a call and come for a visit! Your palette will thank you!

Yelp
Nice wine, rude host. Learn some hospitality. As soon as I walked in with our infant son (who was quiet the entire visit) he wanted nothing to do with us. He gave us Short sarcastic description of the wines, even though we kept asking more inquisitive questions... we enjoy learning more about the origin of anything we are tasting. Despite all this we still bought a bottle, although his only thank you was a request for us to make sure we didn't leave a dirty diaper in the bathroom. Any future parents trying to visit Baxter... my reco is to skip and go elsewhere.

Yelp
Sophisticated and delicious wines, their recent black label red is one of my all time favorite red wines. The winemaker's wife was the one providing our tasting and she is such a lovely person. We enjoyed chatting with her and tasting all of their wines. They are well worth the visit!

Yelp
Baxter makes some of my favorite wines so I was really looking forward to stopping by their tasting room on my recent trip to Mendocino. It was such a nice little place! Very clean and welcoming decor with a lovely bar, indoor and outdoor seating, and the wine makers lovely wife Claire pouring and guiding us through our tasting. The tasting was 5 different wines: 1 Chardonnay and 4 Pinot Noirs. They were all outstanding, but my favorite was the Oppenlander Pinot (which I took home a few bottles of :) ). I can't wait to drink and share this wine with others, and will be looking forward to my next trip out this way so I can stop by the tasting room again.

Yelp
Visited on 10/18 after a full day in Anderson Valley so our pallets were shot. Thanks to Claire for putting up with us. Very tasty pinots. 2012 Oppenlander and the Langley Pinto Noir were my favorites here. Price pretty standard for good pinot from this area.

Yelp
We were skeptical about stopping because it is not one of your 'amazing view' stops that many wineries in Anderson Valley offer. Instead it is a small tasting room (but very cute, clean, and modern). Definitely worth the stop! The wine makers wife served us and she was very nice. The wines were all REALLY good, the Syrah being our favorite - bought a bottle to go! :) don't let the location fool you, great place to stop!

Yelp
I had found what I was sure was my favorite pinot noir until we tried Baxter. Baxter is now the favorite and what everything else is compared against. Great wine, great people. Highly recommend joining the wine club.
