We took a family trip to Oahu last month and spent most of our time in the busy confines of Waikiki. The one day we decided to be ambitious, we loaded everyone up into two minivans and drove to the North Shore. We'd hoped to find turtles at Turtle Bay, but were not especially disappointed to find a Ritz Carlton instead, with a peaceful beach and an idyllic bar.
Beach House by Roy Yamaguchi is the resort restaurant. There was an attractive dining area that was closed on a Monday afternoon, but I walked through it chasing after my two-year-old, who was entranced by the numerous ceiling fans. We posted up at the bar, a nice spot with a serene view of the beach. We were with several family members, including my cousins, who took turns playing with our two small sons. My husband and I spent a blissful hour sipping drinks at the bar, much of it with our children watched and accounted for by trusted adults. Our older kid squeezed in a full beach visit, playing in the sand and water with my cousin and her boyfriend.
The drinks were tropical and delicious. The Signature Infused Martini was made a mix of Koloa coconut rum and Stoli Vanilla with Maui Gold pineapples, shaken up cool and frothy. The cocktail was nice, and the sweet, boozy pineapple was spectacular. The Ho'onanea was a better cocktail, though without the Maui Gold. It was a refreshing mix of Kuleana Nanea rum, Sugar Cane Dane mango and lilikoi gomme, and macadamia nut orgeat. I could see myself drinking enough of those to fall into a vacation-induced coma.
I've never stayed up on the North Shore, but I totally get the appeal. It's so much quieter and more relaxing than Waikiki. I'm happy we got to visit during this recent trip. Our time at the Beach House bar was absolutely lovely.
