"Bealach na Ba Bealach na Ba, or “Pass of the Cattle,” may be just a road, but it’s one of the most remarkable drives in all of Britain. Rivaling many a Swiss mountain pass, it winds its way from Lochcarron up 2,000 feet to the Bealach and Applecross, offering breathtaking views of Highland alpine crags, the Isle of Skye, and even the Outer Hebrides farther out to sea. Once you reach the top, there’s a parking area to the left, but take the trail up to the transmitter station for even more spectacular vistas. Don’t, however, attempt the drive in a camper or other large vehicle—the upper part of the road is one lane all the way to the top."

I drove the road on a cloudy and windy day in June and the scenery was magical. The most beautiful sights can be seen from the road itself which is quite dangerous as it is a single track road with quite a lot of bends as well as slopes and a few hairpin bends. The passing places on the road are often bumpy and not very spacious but can easily fit a van or a car. However, driving on this road with a motorhome or a camper can become pretty dangerous and mostly annoying for other drivers. Luckily, there was nearly no traffic when I visited so I had the chance to take in the atmosphere of this panoramic setting. The viewing point itself has also a very beautiful view.

Stunning mountain road, single track with plenty of passing place and a few laybys to stop and take in the views. The viewpoint was beautiful despite the cloudy day. Especially loved the hairpins towards the end. Very entertaining seeing lorries navigating the road and workers tarmacking a couple of passing places near the viewpoint, also having to work around us tourists driving through. We entered Applecross via the coastal route and exited via the mountain route, highly recommend 😊

Bealach na Bà Viewpoint – A Perfect Place to Pause This is a perfect safe spot to pull over during your journey up or down the incredible Bealach na Bà road. There's a good-sized, free car park which makes it easy to stop without any stress. The views from here are absolutely stunning — sweeping mountains, deep valleys, and on a clear day, you can see for miles. It's a brilliant place to take a break, grab a few photos, and just soak in the wild beauty of the Highlands before carrying on with the adventure.

Unfortunately, we had a very overcast and misty morning when we arrived at this part of the NC500 but I can only imagine how beautiful it would have been! Still a great drive up there.

The roadsigns warn "No cars towing caravans" and " No motorhomes," so it was quite entertaining to watch a lorry driver navigate the hairpin bends. We thought it was interesting enough in our van. We were blessed with wonderful weather, so for us this meant we had marvellous views. We headed over to Applecross via the pass and came back via the coast road (which is something I'd recommend doing).

If you enjoy driving, are experienced and want a little challenge then the Bealach na Ba road is for you... Couple of warnings though, it gets STEEP! It has very tight hairpins and it's steepest gradiant of 20%. It's a single track road with a carpark at the top. There are small passing places on the way up and down. Your biggest danger will be the weather. I went up on a low cloud day and within 5 minutes I could hardly see 10 meters in front of me so be very careful. On a clear day though it's well worth it. Enjoy

The journey to this viewpoint is a real adventure, even in a car. Some brave (and fit...) people walk and cycle up and over the pass too. Be ready for the exhilarating feeling of battling the wind just to stand still.

I imagine in good weather the view is amazing! Narrow single track road but absolutely fine for VW Transporter size campers.
