Perfect experience start to finish. Nancy was prompt to respond and allowed us a private room for three of us since it wasn’t too busy. The house is huge, tons of common area space and a FULLY stocked kitchen including a BBQ that we took advantage of. Overlooks the lake and is easy to get to. Beds were comfy, the house was clean and well appointed. Things such as shampoo, towels, etc all supplied. I would absolutely stay again if ever in the area, I wish we booked two nights. We did the Cabot trail and it was a perfect spot to end the night.

This is an amazing place and I really wishes I stayed here for weeks and months. Very peaceful with beautiful views of the lake. The house is spacious with plenty of space. It feels like the kind of place you want to just hang out in. The kitchen is spacious and has all the appliances you need. Comfortable beds. Squeaky clean bathrooms. The owner Nancy is amazing. Hospitable, helpful and super interesting to talk to. What a gorgeous place!

My stay was absolutely perfect from start to finish. The place was spotless, beautifully maintained, and had everything I needed for a comfortable visit. The atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing, making it easy to feel right at home. I would highly recommend this stay to anyone looking for comfort, convenience, and genuine hospitality. Definitely looking forward to coming back!

Bear on the lake is a charming guest house/hostel on Big Bras D’or Lake with all the basics (yes, wifi!). Nancy showed us around the kitchen and common areas when we arrived. There is an outdoor patio with chairs, tables, and a grill, as well as a smaller deck on the upstairs level. Within a half hour of sitting outside in June, I saw goldfinches, a blue jay, and a hummingbird. ||There is a huge communal kitchen, full sized fridge, stove/oven, and bins you can label with your name to keep food in. Previous travelers had left perfectly good food so between that and our own groceries, we made quite a few meals here. We stayed in a private room (accessibility note: private rooms are up a flight of stairs). Our room had a double bed, a standing fan, a closet area with hangers, and a window. The upstairs common area and bathroom were shared with another couple staying in the other private room. Clean towels, hand soap, and a hairdryer were provided. The common area has couches, board games, and a big dining room table. One minor, minor quibble: our bed had 2 total pillows and we are both double pillow people. I probably could have asked but I was tired from our travels and didn’t bother.||Yes, you do have to wash your own dishes but if you’re looking for a budget-friendly place that’s also clean, this is it. I paid $207 CAD for two nights which is about $75 USD per night. An absolute steal for a great place to stay.

Nancy was an outstanding host. Her communication and flexibility made our last minute booking stress free. Enjoying a cup of coffee on the porch with spectacular views and hummingbirds buzzing about was a magical experience. Would recommend staying here

The Bear feels like home. I’ve stayed here many times on my way from nb to nl. Beautiful deck, chairs, hummingbirds and view. Gorgeous group kitchen table, fully equipped kitchen, clean sheets and exceptionally clean bathrooms and shower. I’ve met interesting people, enjoyed the surrounding countryside and markets. The proprietor is a ray of sunshine. I look forward to staying here like it’s my favourite vacation spot!!

Great hostel ! Very clean (each morning Nancy is cleaning the common areas) and in a quiet place. Close to the “highway” but in the house you won’t hear the traffic. The rooms are cosy and there is a lot of free foods that allows you to make lunch or dinner easily (like oil, spices,…). And on morning you can prepare your coffee thanks to the free one. Nancy, the owner is really a nice person and thanks to her I was able to use the bike to go in town. She also gave a lift for the bus. If you are there don’t miss the coffee in town (la Provence), great place !
