The Beara Coast Hotel is situated in an absolutely gorgeous location looking out on the harbour and famous fishing port of Castletownbere. It was originally called 'Cametringane Hotel' way back in the late 70's and 80's, (in fact I had my wedding reception there all of 36 years ago!) has had a number of owners since, was closed completely for the past number of years and, as a result became totally run down. However, on a recent visit to Beara, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it has now reopened under new management with a badly needed complete refurbishment and upgrade. There is still some work to be done on the surrounding grounds and pathways etc but I must say the work done to date on the interior is wonderful and modern while still retaining subtle hints of the 'old style'. We enjoyed a very pleasant lunch in the bar area - it was a Sunday and the restaurant was completely booked out, a very good sign indeed! Our food was absolutely delicious and the service was excellent and efficient. The Manager on Duty made it his point to drop by each table and chat to the customers, seeking their opinions on the food etc., and to ensure that everything was up to standard. The menus appear to be very good and varied, with a 3 course Sunday lunch priced at €25, an extensive dinner menu as well as a really good Bar Menu with a huge choice of starters, sandwiches, main courses and even a burger bar.
The picturesque setting would make it a brilliant location for a wedding, with such wonderful scenery for memorable photographs with the harbour etc in the background. I believe the bedrooms have also been upgraded to a high standard and some of them have balconies looking out over the harbour. What a wonderful location for a holiday or short break to explore the amazing Beara peninsula which is also on the famous Wild Atlantic Way route.
The whole place was really busy but the friendly and efficient staff made sure everything was running smoothly and 'ship shape', if you pardon the pun!
