Off-Centered Ale Trail: Baltimore

"What was once a clanging, industrial quarry is today submerged beneath the placid waters of Beaver Dam. Marble mining in this region began in the 19th century and peaked in the 1920s, surging from hammers and chisels to cranes, sawing machines, and a 50-ton boom derrick. The stone from the Cockeysville region, famed for its hardness and polish, got its big break with the construction of the Washington Monument in Baltimore, which was the first major monument in the United States to honor the first president. The Baltimore monument is most-known for its crowning statue, which features Washington resigning his post as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. It was shaped out of a carved piece of marble, which was excavated as a single 36-ton block at this site. Ishmael, the narrator of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, admired the result greatly: “Great Washington, too, stands high aloft on his towering main-mast in Baltimore, and like one of Hercules’s pillars, his column marks that point of human grandeur beyond which few mortals will go.” An extension to the Northern Central Railway was connected to the site in 1866 and fueled the quarry’s most ambitious digs. The stones transported from this site would supply the stone for both the $50,000,000 Fisher Building in Detroit and for the lower portion of the Washington monument in Washington, D.C. (The obelisk on the national mall was subject to a 25-year break in construction, during which it was halted at 152 feet. Completed, it stands at 554 feet.) Beaver Dam has been been primarily used as a swimming hole since 1934. When the swimming club first opened, swimmers paid a quarter for per visit. Although it costs slightly more today, it remains just as popular, if not more so. The swim club is open in the summer months and features swimming pools and picnic tables in addition to the 40-foot-deep quarry." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Such a fun spot! We had such a great time! the only reason it’s 5 stars for me is because it needs a couple key updates - need better seating, such as lounge chairs for the beach, and more picnic tables. The rope swing is SO fun but also so slippery - they really need a better bar or some sort of grippers on it to make it safer and more fun. Both of us tore our hands up on that thing. Also note they are very strictly no alcohol (they check your car). They have a snack bar with food but I would probably bring stuff to grill next time. Kids need to be at least 4 to go in the quarry, but there’s also multiple pools and a playground (and more land we didn’t explore). There’s lots of fun spots to jump in - diving board, cliffs, docks, etc. Super fun spot! I hope they update the swing and seating and I’d wanna come every day, haha! But it is pricey for a group - $25 per person.

I'm a solo female traveler, took the train from central Baltimore to Gilroy Road station and walked 10 min to the quarry. Had a great time, loved the swing and that there are several places to jump and dive from. Sat at a bench close to the water. I love the trees that provided ample shade (I get RED in the sun!). Three schoolbuses of teenagers arrived same time as me, they seemed to have so much fun. I helped some little kids with the swing. Were four life guards on duty, probably a good idea since the quarry is deep and people having so much fun and getting a little wild. Had a tasty hot dog at the kiosk before heading back. Totally recommend this place for escaping the heat and spending a wonderful summers day!

I've been visiting this park off and on since I was a small child in the late 80s. It was fun getting to come back in 2025 with my children.. This park brings back so many good memories.

Google
Awesome spot but the owner and staff over do the creation and enforcement of rules to try and lessen their liability if something happens but they mostly just ruin people’s experiences. Most recently they told me I couldn’t swim because my rash guard had a hood and it could fill up with water and drown me. Seriously? It was a surf rash guard and made for the water. Clearly this was a misapplied rule but they sure did ruin my day over it. For the life of me I don’t known how I made it to being an adult because I clearly am not capable of making a swim wear choice!

Google
This was a really good time, if you go during the weekday it’s $10 cheaper. There was plenty of room to try the diving board and swing. This place is a great family vibe with plenty of room, grills available and you can bring in food. I will be back to try out the snack bar, life vests will have a card on file.

Google
I have to agree with the Post above that says its too expensive for what its worth. I have a question... is it normal to get your trunk and cooler searched before you come into the park or is it random guests? It was also my first and last time. Today it was $25 for adults and $20 for children. the place is truly run down. Maybe that's why the entry is so high to hopefully do some renovations? Not sure but I'll be sticking to the state parks.

Google
A little pricey but decent swimming lake. Diving boards, a rope swing/ zip line and some rocks to jump from. Wasn't too crowded on a weekday. Cannot swim the whole lake, just cordoned off little corners. The amenities could use updating- peeling paint, bare bones changing room etc but overall a good enough option.

Yelp
First time this season, it's huge plenty space for everyone specially toddlers. My little one had an amazing time in the pool and Dad had fun at the lake. I love that they have grills to cook your own food. Must arrive early in order to enjoy all the fun.

Yelp
The Beaver Dam Swim Club was a fun adventure my kids (9 and 5) and I took this summer. The swim club offers two different swimming pools, one with a slide, a small sandy beach, a volleyball area grills and lots of space to run and play. The big draw, for me as an adult, was the water filled quarry. The quarry has rope swings, a diving board and rock outcroppings that you can climb and jump from. We had a blast trying out all of these different things. Just a few notes. Beaver Dam searches every car upon arrival. I heard the lines can get long though we were inside the Swim Club in five minutes (only one car in front of us). Kids below a certain age need to have a Beaver Dam life jacket to swim in the quarry. The Club is also pricey. It was 25 dollars for me and 17 for each of my kids. If you arrive early, and stay the day, you can get your money's worth.

Yelp
A great place to enjoy a hot summer day. You can bring your own food or use their snack bar. You can also bring your own rafts. I prefer going during the week when it's not too crowded. One time I went during one of the holidays, it was crazy busy, people blasting music/ kinda trashy vibes- but during the week it's chill.

Yelp
On July 7th 2024, me and a couple friends including family, went here and it was endless, the lifeguards are a pain and cannot do their job right, a lifeguard was at the pool and saw one of our baby girls almost drowning, while she sat there and looked and we were the ones to save her, IT HAPPENED TWICE! these are the people we trust our kids with??We couldn't have floats which is what the kids need for a necessary reason! and we have to rent $20 life jackets. Later on me and my friends were sitting at our table and this lady who searched our car earlier came up to the table next to us and asked to lowed the volume but when she came to us she decided to lower it herself without asking our permission. We paid $30 a person just for them to have poor management! DO NOT COME HERE!
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
Came here at 11am on a Saturday and the line was over a mile long to enter. I was told later by a friend who came earlier they were searching cars for alcohol. Really?? It was too hot to be idling a car for an hour plus wait so we left.

Yelp
I'm 33 years old and I just found this place. Living in Maryland my whole life I'm kind of mad because this place is awesome the rope swing has you feeling like jack sparrow jumping off of a pirate ship, they have rock jumps. A very high diving board great energy for kids,I highly recommend coming here if you're looking for some summer fun

Yelp
The experience I had here was atrocious. I went with my family for a small gathering and the complaints were endless. The staff was incredibly racist and had zero communication skills. The parking situation is predatory at best. My brother and I were belittled and spoken down to when we wanted to know why we were banned from the water (though, for the price and horrible parking situation, we deserved MORE than that). Even the black security guards told us it was a lost battle with attempting to reason because their bosses are racist. We were threatened with the police being called to remove us since the lady from the front didn't agree with how we kept attempting to explain what occurred. She kept with the passive aggressive attitude and rude remarks. I was honestly very upset and had to leave so not to ruin the family day for my infant nephew and siblings. I will never ever return and I implore people to protest this horrible and badly managed establishment. Everything needs a deep clean, from the pools to the lake and the owners honestly should consider taking hospitality classes. Hated this experience and hate this place.

Yelp
A very pretty little spot for swimming. We arrived an hour after they opened. People answering the phone when we called earlier were very nice as were the people at the entrance where we paid. More people than we expected and many (most) were not wearing masks despite the club's stated rules. Staff were wearing masks (not the lifeguards though). It was hard to know if people who were in very close proximity to others were members of groups who came together / families / isolating together etc., or if they were just being lax about social distancing rules, which made it stressful to be there. In the swimming area, there are limited points to enter the water so it means you will be less than six feet apart from others at certain points. There is generally no enforcement of social distancing or mask wearing when you're out of the water and in common areas. There was one loudspeaker announcement reminding those waiting for the rope swing to remain six feet apart. Also the staff person watching the swing was giving people hand sanitizer before taking their turn on the rope swing. We were glad we brought in our own food given the crowd and lack of distancing and mask wearing in general, though they have a food shack. We didn't venture into the bathrooms. I would have given more stars if they had better protocols and enforcement of rules during Covid-19!

Yelp
This is a super fun adventure that should be taken advantage of during the summer time. An hour drive north of Baltimore will have you swimming in one of the rock quarries that established the Washington Monument. The Cockeysville marble is used on the majority of the monument except for the first 150 feet of the 555 1/8 tall structure in Washington DC. Now that you know you're swimming in a place with a lot of history, let's talk about it. It's gonna cost you quite a bit to get in. Prices change from weekdays and weekends. When my friend and I came, it cost $18 per person. What you get: * a massive swimming quarry with lots of diving opportunities into 70 to 100 feet deep water * Tarzan rope swing for you daredevils ^^ I clearly sucked at this. You need a lot of upper body strength for this venture. If you don't, you're going to pummel into the water with a vengeance and it will hurt. Trust me when you see my videos and photos attached to this review - you'll see what you're not supposed to do. I walked away with a black and purple chest because my chest got bruised from my landings. This won't happen to you if you swing out far enough and manage your position going into the water. * plenty of swimming pools for the kiddies and they aren't that deep * reasonable concession stands with your typical fare - hotdogs, burgers, and chicken nuggets to name a few. * ample parking * shower/bathroom facilities (not that clean...) * a lot of the place hasn't been updated probably since the '60s as far as the buildings go. It is retro in a good way. They're well maintained for the most part. * you cannot leave and re-enter without paying again. * tons of lifeguards and facility staff on hand Bring the fam or bring yourself. They offer long hours and operate during typical summer months from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Yelp
Super fun for family & friends, each person is $20 also if you don't know how to swim don't bother getting in unless you have a life jacket! they don't allow non swimmers in without them due to the depth of the water

Jackie B.

Yelp
I came here a couple of times last year and it was great but it has changed. Kids 4 an under aren't allowed in the quarry only in the pool which by the way looks disgusting. Also there's no floaty's or pool noodles or any type of water toys allowed. It kind of seems like it's just not a kid friendly place anymore. Also the parking situation isn't the best. For the price you're paying to get in it's not really worth it if you're coming with kids.

Yelp
So it's really pretty, unique, and fun. My husband and I didn't get any food while we were there so I don't have anything to say about that. It's just a little pricey at $20/person, so I imagine big groups will be quite the bill. Just my husband and I had a lot of fun though. So why the three stars? Super crazy parking situation and it's a total free-for-all. I definitely feel like this place should have a maximum capacity due to the parking situation and the life guard situation. The quarry is deep asf, which is so cool and feels wonderful, but only three guards? I only saw one paying any attention to what was going on, and she was the one farthest from the dock. You have children in a 40ft deep quarry with low visibility jumping off of rocks and diving boards (very fun)- but the guards have to be on point for that. Parents should absolutely be policing their own children, but anything can happen in water that deep and lots of families with multiple kids were there. As a mom, it just gave me anxiety and I found myself paying really close attention to the children I was swimming or floating near. As adults, my husband and I had a ton of fun on our anniversary, but we both agreed this isn't the best spot for our daughter to come with us to until she's older. Even the kid's play pool was super crowded and just about anything can go wrong when the lifeguards don't seem to be paying attention. Overall- fun spot for a few friends to cook out at, but I'd leave the kids with the grandparents if they're in grade school to avoid a panic attack. You just never know.

Yelp
This idea of this place is nice and would be a totally satisfying experience if COVID-19 wasn't a reality. We went here yesterday, they have zero enforcement of social distancing. No signage, tons of people crowded together in the water, at the picnic tables, hovering around the ladders to even enter the water. I get that businesses are struggling right now but you also have a responsibility if people are paying to enter to make sure people are being safe. We did not stay long after seeing this despite paying $55 for entry. It was not worth it.
google avatar

Shelly M.

Yelp
My friend and I were looking up swimming spots around MD and finally decided to go here. It was a hot Saturday in early August and although it was busy it never felt packed. More importantly it exceeded our expectations. Tons of picnic tables and grills, a small pool for the young kiddos, and a beautiful natural water swimming area that is 50 feet deep. We were amazed there was a Tarzan swing, and so many things to jump off of! We seriously had a blast and hope to return back! The staff was also super friendly! :)

Yelp
Can't lie this was the spot when I was younger. Been coming here since I was 5... a while. Learned how to swim here all of it. Last time I went was 2 weeks ago they were extremely rude and were racially profiling people of color. As the manager being someone of color I would thought they would be treating everyone fairly, just like any customer service etc. They kicked my sister out because she seemed "tired" of swimming and wasn't permitted to be even near water. They were extremely rude when I went up to them trying to figure out their deal. Lifeguards are a pain in the ass. They are disrespectful and out of hand with the way they talk to a person or color but, if it was someone white they were nice and no talk backs. I don't know what happened these past years but, racially profiling someone for their skin isn't the best way to bring people around here.
google avatar

Megan B.

Yelp
Very crowded if you don't get there early. And one of the lifeguards was very rude when we first got there yelling for people to "get the hell out of the reservoir"
google avatar

Ali W.

Yelp
Over capacity for the 4th. We did everything we were suppose to, we looked on the website which was not updated, then we called and then called a second number and the women on the phone said there was no capacity cap. We waited an hour and a half to be told that we can't come in. These people are rude and don't care about you or your family, so better luck going somewhere where people actually care. Everyone had a different story, no one could get their stories straight even after the cops came. We were told they opened at 10:15 when it said nothing of the sort on the website. Don't waist your time or $18 per person!!!!!!
google avatar

Emma P.

Yelp
Venue was nice but prices were too high. I drove an hour to swim in a cesspool of small children and paid an arm and a leg to do so. Whatever you do, do NOT order the food there. Bring your own. The service is terrible and it was not good enough for the price. It was a fun day trip but I don't think I'll be doing this again.
google avatar

Oscar G.

Yelp
Terrible experience!! My family and I went on Labor day, we spent about $300. "Steve" was very disrespectful and rude, I felt as he was racist and very offensive. I believe that the manager should talk to him because he shouldn't be yelling at customers and making them feel discriminated. We tried to explained to him what happen but his response was that if I didn't listen I should "just go home". To be honest I feel as though he should not be working in this place and should be fired.
google avatar

Amanda P.

Yelp
This place is one of a kind. Where else can you swim in a quarry? I came here with family on a Monday and had a blast. Rope swing, jumping off rocks, logs, diving board and lost of space to sit and relax. Yes the guards are very strict, but they have a job to do and that is to keep everyone safe. I am white and they told my son that he would have to get a life vest if couldn't keep up. Yes, it is a bit pricey, but well worth the cost. Bring a picnic/BBQ and stay the whole day.

C M.

Yelp
This place is a treasure, a throwback to earlier times, a way to get a sense of what it meant to swim in a swimming hole. The "hole" is enormous. The rope swing and rafts are fun. CAUTION: It's very deep so make sure your child is wearing a life preserver (available on site) if he/she is likely to go in the quarry as opposed to one of the pools. I hope to support Beaver Dam with a visit or two this summer, up from the Washington suburbs. This is one of those places that some people tend to under-appreciate until it's gone.
google avatar

Thomas H.

Yelp
Really good spot. at $18 a person and allowing you to bring your own food and drink (sans alcohol, they check every trunk). If you make a day of it - it is really fun. A bit dated in some aspects but there is a fun diving board, cliffs about 8 feet high to jump off, and a rope swing. Good time and great escape.

Yenni G.

Yelp
This a nice place to come to, but the lifeguards are rude! They don't talk to you in polite manners. When they tell you to get out out of the water the lifeguards say it in a very rude way. On the 4th of July they were kicking people out for the dumbest reasons. " I don't like how you swim" or " It looked like you were struggling" The lifeguards really need to improve on their manners because I didn't come and pay 82$ for nothing. Today they kicked out my grandpa after he had been swimming for 2 hours. The first lifeguard didn't say anything to him until they switched and the lady said that he was struggling, he wasn't swimming properly etc.
google avatar

Yelp
We came here a family trip and we arrived about 20 minutes before they opened just so we wouldn't have to wait in line if there would be one. We were told by a staff member to park on the road because we weren't allowed to park on the street they have to enter. We listened and a couple minutes later a police wanted to give us a ticket because we were parked on the road. Luckily we didn't receive a ticket. Now we're inside and I get in the water and me and my little brother start swimming. We reach the opposite side of the lake and rest on top of a platform they have, after a bit we get off and start swimming back and on our way back one of the lifeguards named Dennis said that we needed life vests because we didn't know how to swim. I asked him how did he think we made it all the way over there and back. His response was because I was floating on my back from being tired. My little brother and I have never been told something so stupid and we've been everywhere swimming. We didn't show any sign of drowning or showed that we needed help. They kept telling us to get out when we were already heading out. I get out, come back 3 hours later and then I get told the same thing. We got into an argument after he started yelling at me and when an older person came to ask what was wrong and he called his manager they told us to leave with no refund we insisted because we were already cooking. A very nice young man came and I talked to him he said we could stay, which upset everyone else because they just kept starring at us. Later I put only my feet in the water and they told me I have to get out because I don't have a life vest, at that point they really were just doing that so we could end up leaving. There was a kid with a cast on his arm in the water and he was told nothing! Honestly I felt racially profiled because they only made me and other people of color get out to put on a vest. Everyone else was just asked if they knew how to swim and if they said yes they were good to go. They also kept starring at us when we were leaving and rushed us out. It was a terrible experience, out of everyone that worked there only two people treated us respectfully. I would give this 0 stars if I could.
google avatar

Desiree M.

Yelp
Really nice place. I had no idea a place like this was so close to me. At first I thought the price to get in was expensive, but after looking at some other places ... this was a good place compared to the others. Most other places don't have nearly as much as what this place has. I am guessing that during the summer this place is typically crowded, but I think it was worth it. Also I want to add that I brought my cousins and sibling here, and they really enjoyed it; it was mainly for them, and I am glad they had fun.
google avatar

Alexis B.

Yelp
As a water attraction they had fun things to do here including a rope swing. The down side to our visit one was one the rope swing was closed due to pulley issues within 15 mins of our arrival into the park. After this we had an enjoyable time until closing when we walked back to our grilling station to sing happy birthday, eat cake and clean up which was doable in 15 mins before 6:30. But, we were continuous pestered by the staff at this established unlike everyone else to clean up and make sure we are out. In the time that they wasted nagging us to leave while we were cleaning up in order to ensure they did not have to clean up after us, an argument ensued as we were trying to be respectful of the park and clean all of our trash into the respective trash bins. This was followed by the cops being called on us; and the cops asking what race we were and if we had weapons. I do not see what race has to do with the fact that we were being badgered to leave while cleaning up to save the staff time and being respectful of the park. I am completely and totally disappointed with this business and WILL NOT be returning as an African American woman.

Talia R.

Yelp
I went here to spend quality time with my friends and received probably the worst treatment I've ever experienced. Not only do the immature lifeguards get agitated when you're trying to help fix a misunderstanding, but the manager also blows it up out of proportion even more. When an establishment charges people money to swim in a dirty quarry, they can at least teach their life guards to mind their business. When we were sitting catching up with one another, a lifeguard had "heard us" talk about them when no one touched on the subject and ran to tell her friend which then led to them making us come back over once again to demand respect when no one had disrespected anyone in the first place. Maybe they should hire actual lifeguards who aren't 16 years old. Definitely not coming back.

Yelp
This place is great and not far, bring the whole family it's great for birthday parties family reunion's or just a cook out they have their own grills there or you can bring your own. Swinging on the Tarzan rope is the best excitement for me. If you never been you have to go try it out for yourself I been coming here for 8 years, oh one bad thing people get there early so I guess to get there favorite spot but it's plenty of space you will find a spot.

Carter S.

Yelp
Who puts a grill in the middle of pick nick tables... on yeah beaver dam does because they don't know how to lay things out.

Laura D.

Yelp
What a fun location!!! The prices seem a bit high for a visit to a simple swim club, however this location is no simple swim club!!! Pack a nice lunch with snacks (skip the alcohol, they check your trunk!), there are multiple pools, ample parking, and loads of staff!!! Would sure to be a family favorite if we lived in the area!
google avatar

Jacqueline L.

Yelp
My first time ever going to this lake/swimming pool. I absolutely loved it. I like how they also had a little pool for babies and one for older kids right next to it. Seem like a really smart idea and they also had a lot of areas you could dive off. Which was really cool in my opinion so it's kinda hard to get bored well if your not a fan of swimming too much. I wasn't a fan of the rules , I believe they are a little up tight but overall great place to go with family
google avatar

Teneka W.

Yelp
Cool local place to swim with multiple pools up to 4ft and a quarry. Dont be afraid of the 100ft quarry because they do have a small section of it roped off that's about 5ft deep. Plenty of grills and picnic tables. The alcohol/smoking policy is strictly, strictly enforced. Apparently a party directly across from where we were was smoking "Mary Jane" inside of their car, one of the park staff members were walking past just as they were exiting the car, got a whiff of it and asked them to leave. The staff do walk around periodically checking for prohibited items and behavior which is an added sense of security. Just in case you forget anything there is a gas station directly across the street which sells a few "supply in demand" items. However, if you've already paid to get into the park then you should probably walk across the street because if you drive you'll have to pay again to re-enter. And speaking of pay, in my opinion this place is a little to expensive for what it is. Weekends $17 for adults and $13 for kids.

Yelp
Fun for the entire family, ample lifeguards on duty, 2 swimming pools, rope swing, snack bar. Love this summertime hot spot

Natalie A.

Yelp
A really awesome place to go during the summer. There is so much to do here that it's practically impossible to get bored. Beaver dam has two pools and then the quarry to swim in with a rope swing, slides, diving boards, volleyball, basketball, plenty of parking space, grills galore, a snack bar, lots of picnic tables and pavilions, and plenty of space to play sports. You can jump off the cliffs, swim, or just float around if you feel like it. Everyone is really friendly and a lot of families come on the weekend. It's a lot of fun and just a great environment

Carol W.

Yelp
A great place to spend a hot summer day! This place is over 30 acres of fun with several pools, a scary-fun rope swing, beachy area for relaxing and more. The best part is the quarry with piers to swim to, logs to roll, rafts to relax on and fresh inviting rafts. It is a natural environment with beautiful trees and landscaping. I love it as a favorite go-to summer getaway.
