We had a little bit of time to kill before our early dinner elsewhere in Fitzroy, so we decided to pop into Beermash and relax for a little bit. I was also interested to see what a craft beer store would be like, as my general experience with beers in this part of the world, generally speaking, have been a bit disappointing. The selection here is quite good and varied, with local showings as well as beers from all over the world (including some great ones from my hometown of NYC). I actually sampled an Australian beer, as I saw that they had some that were a bit higher than the usual low-ABV drinks I have typically encountered in restaurants. The double IPA I had from a brewery in Victoria was pretty good, and there were multiple other beers (imperial stouts, sours) that upped the punch a little bit. The gentleman behind the counter working the 20 or so beers on tap was a pleasant fellow, and there's no better way of passing time than playing some of the various board and card games that are left about...it was the first time I ended up playing Uno in years!
Overall, the vibe is very nice and relaxed, and given the dearth of good beer options I have tended to encounter in Australia / New Zealand, Beermash was something of an oasis when it came to excellent selection of craft beers both near and far. Definitely worth a stop if you are nearby.
