On the Grid : Beer Mash

"We love Beer Mash – what a craft beer selection! Located in the busiest part of Smith St, this is where to get the real deal. It has a rotating selection of beer on tap – sometimes the odd cold brew coffee – to have there or to take-away in 'growlers'. Growlers too much? Choose from their vast bottled or canned beer selection. With international names like Mikkeller and Rogue and local ones like Hawkers, Moon Dog and Exit Brewing I only wonder why it took me so long to realise this store existed. What makes them even more popular is they stock plastic growler bottles for all you music festival enthusiasts." - Studio Fellow

BEERMASH on Smith Street is an absolute favourite of ours. The first thing that really stands out is the staff. They are always so friendly, welcoming and genuinely great to chat to, which instantly makes it a brilliant place to spend time. The drinks selection is seriously impressive. The choice of beers and wines is off the chart, with so many incredible local delicacies and interesting things to try that you’re spoiled for choice every visit. Go for the chilled red wine if it’s 38 outside!

At Beermash, one does not simply drink beer — one embarks upon a curated journey through hops, malt, and the very soul of fermentation. My takeaway pint, though modest in vessel, was a liquid epiphany: nuanced, layered, and possessed of a finish so elegant it might have worn cufflinks. Fitzroy continues to spoil the refined palate.

Great local brew house with a huge variety of drinks on tap, and not just for beer drinkers. I enjoyed a local cider while my partner sampled another beer. Was also great value getting a glass pour, which allowed the opportunity to sample without committing to a large pot. Cider was delicious, and partner enjoyed Beer Mash house larger. Awesome fitout and cool vibes.

Beermash is an incredibly cozy spot, perfect for beer enthusiasts. Their unique concept of 27 steps, 20 of which feature beer, is a fun and creative way to experience a wide variety of flavors. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, making it an ideal place to relax and try something new. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a vibrant and enjoyable beer-tasting experience!

Not sure about the food but their tap beers are sooooooooooo good. If you are a beer person you must visit here and try everything.

Lots of beer varieties from lager to ale and IPA. There’s local and imported beers, and types of wines also. Fav spot for a small drink in Smith St.

Google
Great atmosphere, friendly service, and an excellent selection. I'm really picky about beer and they had multiple beers I could choose from. Usually I'm hard pressed to find even one I like at a pub.

Yelp
Super cute neighborhood hang. Huge beer selection, wine as well.outdoor seating, great place to grab a beer with your mates. Theres a mix of domestic and international options as well as on tap and cans. Some really cool ones I might add with flavors like ice cream and fudge if your into that! If not they've got great IPAs, and ales as well. They also deliver!

Yelp
I don't even like beer, but peer pressure and group-think are powerful forces. This #basic still managed to have a great experience, and that's mostly because of the amazing staff and their ability to understand that not everyone who enters their very inviting and cozy establishment likes beer (despite knowing what you're walking into). The bartender (or whatever you call someone who just pours drinks/fills beers) was extremely friendly and helpful. He really wanted me to try a few things (a rarity when beer is as precious and costly a commodity as it is in Australia) to see if I'd be on board with anything, which I was happy to do. I ultimately went with my trusty backup - Rose (I know), and it was actually a really good one. All our other beer-loving friends loved this place and how could you not? The selection and options were amazing. From the sheer number of beers, sours, and ciders available to the sizes and growler options. This is a super chill hangout spot and if you need to get away from the beer, venture to the back of this place, go up the small staircase and you'll find yourself in a tiny little upscale cocktail lounge that feels like a secret.

Yelp
Walking past Beermash I got curious that perhaps I had stumbled across a new beer bar about to open or maybe it was a beer brewing equipment place. I was wrong on both counts. This stripped-bare warehouse style store is not inviting people in to drink (no on-premise license), but they are definitely making sure you're not leaving without beer. The store features a wall of taps to fill take-home growlers of beer, with a pretty big selection that even features non-beer options like cold brew coffee and DOC wines. This would make an awesome gift for any beer lover and is definitely a bit more exciting than a carton from the bottle-o.

Yelp
We had a little bit of time to kill before our early dinner elsewhere in Fitzroy, so we decided to pop into Beermash and relax for a little bit. I was also interested to see what a craft beer store would be like, as my general experience with beers in this part of the world, generally speaking, have been a bit disappointing. The selection here is quite good and varied, with local showings as well as beers from all over the world (including some great ones from my hometown of NYC). I actually sampled an Australian beer, as I saw that they had some that were a bit higher than the usual low-ABV drinks I have typically encountered in restaurants. The double IPA I had from a brewery in Victoria was pretty good, and there were multiple other beers (imperial stouts, sours) that upped the punch a little bit. The gentleman behind the counter working the 20 or so beers on tap was a pleasant fellow, and there's no better way of passing time than playing some of the various board and card games that are left about...it was the first time I ended up playing Uno in years! Overall, the vibe is very nice and relaxed, and given the dearth of good beer options I have tended to encounter in Australia / New Zealand, Beermash was something of an oasis when it came to excellent selection of craft beers both near and far. Definitely worth a stop if you are nearby.

Yelp
Awesome little hole in the wall and smack bang in the middle of Collingwood. There's 20 taps to choose from, so you know there'll be at least 3-4 that'll peak your interest. Worst case scenario you can just grab something from the fridge and drink it there. Plenty of card games and jenga too.
