On the Grid : Beermoth

"Like a moth to a flame, hopheads and yeast yearners stock up on their favourite varieties at this NQ institution. The store’s selection process means they don’t just stock wild and wacky beers for the sake of it, they hand pick the most outstanding examples they can get hold of. The rotating selection means the shelves change quickly so make sure you ‘hop’ down regularly to make the most of the unusual bottles that pop up. The friendly staff make even the beer-virgins feel at home, offering expertise opinions and helpful suggestions." - The Neighbourhood

Google
Wonderful shop with great collection. Lots of varieties. And the best part of it is the enthusiasm of the staff. I went in as someone who doesn't know much about the products, and the staff member who helped me was one of the most dedicated I have ever come across. Great place!

Picked up some fantastic beers here, wide selection, definitely will be returning

Google
Best beer shop in central Manchester. I hesitate to tell you they've also reopened the tasting table at the back of the shop. Just let us have a couple of the chairs if we're there at the same time, eh?

So basically went on a short break to Manchester and as you do went for a mooch around town, the Northern Quarter, and low and behold we found this goldmine of a beer shop. When we went in we were courteously greeted by the shop owner and pointed to an array of fridges stocked with beers from all around the world and of different styles to drink in or out, i purchased three imperial stouts to take home, all of a reasonable price. If it's takeouts you want this is the place to go.

Google
Cracking beer shop that opens at 11am. We had a cheeky can here ready to start out big Manchester craft beer adventure (& the Block Party). The guy here was very knowledgeable & very friendly giving us all kinds of advice & tips for our trip.

As someone who frequents many craft beer stores, can say I was impressed with this one. Good range of the brewers you'd expect, as well as some more leftfield ones, which is good to see. Being able to drink instore is also a bonus, although on this visit, I did not. The man working there was friendly and knowledgeable about his stock. Would recommend.

Google
Not to be confused with Cafe Beermoth. This is a craft beer bottle shop with the cool option of choosing a bottle or can and drinking it in store, either upstairs or in the cellar. There's the standard craft beer options of IPA, NEIPA, Pale Ale, Sour etc with a large amount chilled and ready to drink. However where Beermoth shines is it's rare, hard to find and vintage bottles. With a massive selection of 330ml, 750ml and even what looked like a 5L across a good variety of prices there's almost certainly something you'll want.

Google
Great artisan store selling quality beers from specialist brewers. Slightly off the beaten track but well worth seeking it out. Not as much stock as other stores, but what they do have is carefully chosen so you're not overawed by too much choice. Set in the fashionable Northern Quarter, Beermoth is a true gem. From Shudehill Station head down Thomas Street, past OiPolloi and take a left down Tib Street with heaven waiting for you just on the right. One word of warning, the average cost of a can or bottle is way above what you'd usually expect to pay; the upside being you're paying for quality and not just your average can numbing liquor.

Yelp
Slightly expensive but a great selection of new beers to try.

Yelp
What a great little shop this is. Beer is brilliant and it is clear that I am not the only one who thinks so as Beermoth certainly share my enthusiasm for this wonderful drink. There is not much that needs to be said about this shop other than that if you like your beer and enjoy trying something different then this place is the place for you, it has the best selection I have found in Manchester so far. In addition to this, the staff are really knowledgeable so if you can't decide what you want then they are there to help, however I would say that in my opinion it is very difficult to make a bad choice here.

Yelp
What an excellent shop - aren't we lucky, Manchester? After a few very enjoyable visits to Cafe Beermoth and on the hunt for some local beers, the other half suggested we head into Beermoth whilst in the NQ. It's small and has a strange feeling of comfort for anyone who's grown up or lived around a beer drinker. The rows of bottles and cans had a calming affect on me and I honestly could have stayed for hours, pawing through the different ranges, especially with some of the beautiful can and bottle labels that are now available. As I was sticking to the local beers, we were restricted to a small area, but it's plenty stocked; I walked away with the likes of Runaway, Cloudwater, and Blackjack. There are plenty of other options, including Chorlton Brewing Company and Mad Hatter from Liverpool, so you're not going to be short of choice even if you've restricted yourself to a particular geographical location or style of beer. The service was super chilled and friendly; although the guys working were having an in-depth chat with two brewers from Germany, they made sure to stop every now and again to make sure we were okay and finding everything okay. I'd like to return to their tasting room and continue my beer education - it seems like the perfect place to do so.

Yelp
A fine specialist bottle shop in the Northern Quarter which has a tasting room on Saturdays 1-7pm and beer event evenings. What more could you ask for? Perhaps cheaper prices, but they are no more or less expensive that other bottle shops with a quality selection and I guess that is the main difference here. This is not your average off license, it's for the beer enthusiast who will happily pay over £6 or upwards for a 33cl bottle shipped from the US or even further abroad. If you want a fine selection of quality beer, then you won't find better in the city centre or in fact within miles of their location. The staff is extremely knowledge having worked behind bars, stillages and brew kits of their own before setting up Beermoth. If there's something you've been after it's likely they've heard about it and even likely it's peaked their interest as well and on the books to order in. It isn't the largest bottle shop around but they pack a startlingly amount of choice into their location. The bulk of their selection is from the UK and America but they cover Belgian, Norwegian, German, Danish, American, Japanese and even some New Zealand breweries fairly well though these have a more curated feel. If they don't have what your after ask them, they may be able to get it for you or let you know how to get a hold of it. The downstairs tasting room, is a good quite spot to stop on a Saturday afternoon to try a bottle or two on your way home. I wouldn't plan a big night out afterward as you'll most likely be walking away clinking with a selection of bottles.

Yelp
On my way to Tib Street Tavern, with about 20 minutes to spare before meeting a friend, I popped into Beermoth at about 8PM on a Saturday. "Hi, would you like a drink?" Why yes, yes I would! 30 seconds later, I've the immense pleasure of drinking about a third of a pint of a complimentary, and excellent, Dutch Saison. These guys clearly know their stuff. In one corner I overheard two (of course) bearded fellows discussing the distressing dearth of qualified beer bloggers in the UK, only one of which (apparently) has ever undertaken any palate training. Recommendations from staff are always spot-on and I think it's fair to say that Beermoth has categorically the best beer selection in all of Manchester, if not the North West. It's the only place other than Port Street Beer House, for example, that I've ever seen stock (any variety of) Schneider Weisse Tap X. Needless to say, I felt obliged to buy a beer from Beermoth after the freebie, and drinking it next door in the Tib Street Tavern (instead of buying a pint there) was one of the best decisions, if ever so slightly cheeky, that I'd made that evening. I really hope it's already super-dooper-obvious, but I'll state it one more time: the staff at Beermoth are all lovely, helpful and knowledgeable. If you like craft beer at all, go to Beermoth. Do it now (unless it's 10AM and they're not open, that would be silly). Pick their brains (again, not literally, that would be all zombie-like and gross) and buy a beer (or six). You won't regret it.

Yelp
Beermoth leads the fight for better beer in our seemingly living-for-the-weekend, lager-drowned city. Perhaps 'fight' isn't the right word, it's not a fight at all. They sit on Tib Street safe in the knowledge that people who appreciate good beer will come, discuss, buy, go home, enjoy (the taste, not the feeling of being drunk) and come back to buy more. They aren't trying to convert the 4-pint-pitcher-guzzling crowds at the Printworks every weekend, they are simply and unassumingly providing good beer to those who appreciate it. The perfectly sized shop stocks a huge variety of beers and there's not a single one that the staff don't know huge amounts about. Every time I visit I witness conversations about a new craft beer or brewery that has got the beer world excited or an in depth discussion about hops. I don't know a lot about this world but I do enjoy a good drop. I also enjoy people with passion and there's plenty of that in this wonderful place. Cheers.

Yelp
The city centre has always lacked a very good bottle shop and when the Beermoth opened in the Northern Quarter I kicked myself and said " I wish I had thought of that". A lot of "beery" places in the city centre have more style than substance, Beermoth has both. The inside of the store looks great for a start. The exposed brick, raw wooden shelves and wooden tables give it a New York loft feel. This is backed up with an excellent beer selection albeit a bit pricy, some of the prices edging more towards what you would pay for in a city centre bar, but there is something for every budget. The beer selection is primarily craft beer, with a few traditional continental European breweries thrown into the mix. Some fantastic UK microbreweries are represented including many local Manchester breweries. My only real criticism is that they have no fridges. Some beers, for example hop heavy beers (think American IPAs, Imperial IPAs etc) should be stored cold to preserve the hop aroma. Brewers store their beer cold after production, they also store their hops in a cold store to preserve that wonderful aroma. The same rule applies in the retail space. Some of these beers have travelled from the USA, Australia & New Zealand. I would love to see some fridges at the back of the store used to keep the hoppy beers chilled to retain that hop aroma and deliver a product to the consumer that is in the best condition possible. When speaking to the guys in the store they are really passionate about great beer and happy to talk to you. However, on their social media accounts I've found a very different story. They will often tweet pictures of their latest stock. When asked "how much" it's always been met with no response. It's not like the prices are top secret so I don't know why they will never respond on twitter when asked for a price but I don't want to have to travel all the way down to the Northern Quarter just to check the price of something. If they could either tweet the price with the image or get an updated price list on line it would be great. Overall Beermoth is a fine feather in the cap for the Manchester beer scene and with a few minor tweaks here and there is all they need.

Yelp
It always seemed odd that, in full-on neckbeard territory, there wasn't a shop selling specialty ales. There was Lomo down the road, where downstairs is great for lagers and spirits, but not a great selection of ales. And now comes the punny Beermoth. A tiny little place with friendly, knowledgable staff, there's a great selection of interesting beers you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere, and certainly nowhere in Manchester city centre. I think they could pack more stock in yet, but it's still fairly early doors. They have the full range of Macclesfield's Red Willow, which makes me happy. The prices are undoubtedly too much for some, but being a fan of short-run microbrewery beers, I'm prepared to pay. I can't say I've liked every beer from here, but that's part of the fun. They appear to do regular tasting events too, though I've not had the pleasure yet. I'd go to Lomo for the lagers though.

Yelp
Thank you, Beermoth, for coming to town. Located just next to Tib Street Tavern (another must for the beer/sport-lovers out there), Beermoth offers an array of local and international brews you can buy and enjoy at home...or at a party...or wherever it is you go to drink, I'm not going to judge. They can get pricey, but given the selection they offer I doubt there are any resident beer drinkers that would fail to find something they love. I saw a lot of brews from San Diego - my stomping grounds. They're much more expensive than what I'd normally pay for them, but given that most imports end up that way, I wasn't too surprised. As of writing this, it's a relatively new shop, so they have more things they can do to entice buyers. One suggestion I'd have for them is to have mini-reviews for assorted brews; one problem I have with buying beer blindly is that I know what I'm looking for, and the label doesn't always tell the story. If there was a short blurb on each available beer just to give an idea of what I'm getting myself into, it'd really help grease my wallet. Or, perhaps, a beer tasting evening so, after an entrance fee, people could sample assorted beers? That could complicate things a bit, though. Anyways, overall I'm happy that Beermoth has opened, and I'm sure I'll be back to stock up on some tasty brews.

Yelp
I love a good bottle shop and I'm so glad to have found one in Manchester. A great mix of domestic and international beers. I was only able to make a quick visit on this occasion but I still left with half a dozen bottles most which I have never tried or seen in the uk. A great selection of American brews from breweries like Sierra Nevada and rouge even a bottle for lagunitas. Domestic stuff from the likes of red willow and magic rock I was happy to see a couple from Williams bros too. It is perfectly placed for the growing craft beer scene and gives people fantastic opportunities to try new beers.
