Beggars Knap B&B

We spent 6 nights at Beggars Knap so that we could visit relatives. It was built as a grand residence by the local brewery owner and the current owner, Mark, and his family live on site. Its atmosphere and decor are reminiscent of grand hotels before they were sadly tarted up and modernised. |As a place to stay, it does not attempt to be anything other than a delightful, somewhat quirky, place for laying down one's head for a good night's sleep, in which . it was successful. Our room contained a comfortably large bed and with a shower that provided a decent shower. The room was excellently furnished in the style of a past age. Food is not provide (except for biscuits and do-it-yourself tea/instant coffee in the room), something of which I am in completer favour, based on hotel stays over the last 60 years. However, there are more than a few nearby eateries of various types. ("Vibes", a vegetarian/vegan cafe across the road is excellent - even for a confirmed carnivore like me). |It is well situated and the area is not all that busy with an adequate amount of surrounding greenery. |We would be more than happy to stay there again.

😊: Very warm and helpful welcome. Beggars Knap is well placed for access on foot to both Dorchester railway stations. Comfortable bed. Pleasant room. Adequate reading light near the bed (but see below for access to switch) Mark responded Immediately to my comment about bathroom fittings.. 😢: Googlemap refers to the property as a B&B, and I missed any reference to room only in the booking process, so the lack of breakfast was a surprise. The level access to the front door is not visible on arrival and is narrow with loose gravel surface. I would not recommend this to anyone with restricted mobility. I managed with my walking aid but with difficulty; not suitable for wheelchairs. There were also some shortcomings unrelated to my mobility issues. The shower room lacked a towel rail (a mobile rail was outside the door), anywhere other than the teilet cistern to place toiletries, and the shower lacked a basket for toiletries. Access to the shower was very narrow and, anyone a little infirm or unsteady would be greatly helped by a grab handle. The only storage other than the wardrobe was in drawers more suited to trinkets than clothes and equipment. The bedside light could not be turned off from the bed and I could not charge my phone or watch within reach of the bed..

😊: The location was perfect. Walking distance of the station and the centre of town. The room was spacious and comfortable and the host extremely hospitable.. 😢: Everything was good,.

😊: The owner was very helpful. He carried my suitcase upstairs to my bedroom and stored luggage for me for most of the day until my onward journey..

The hotel is in a great location with on site parking. The host is super helpful. However, the two night experience was so over priced. The smell of damp as you enter the hotel is overwhelming and penetrates into the room. The bedroom was fussy, musty and tired. None of the pillows or bed linen matched or had a welcoming feel. The shower cubicle had an adequate electric shower but some black mould. The basin was cracked and there was no where to put your toiletries but on the floor. The towels were also extremely tired. And no breakfast included. The ‘mini bar’ was not in operation and the kettle perched on a small table. |It was a shame to have ‘over paid’ for accommodation that was no where near the comfort of my own home. The hotel would be okay for half the price.

My partner booked the 4 poster bed room as a birthday surprise for me. We'd been looking for 5 years, for the perfect 4 poster. We'd been looking for a antique bed, with the curtains and old world charm. This bed not only fitted my dream, the room and decor matched. The dreamy roll top bath! The dim romanic lighting and just the charm, it's just increadable. A very clean and tidy room. With everything we needed. The entrance to the property, the big old door, the stair well and decor just divine! |The host, is just a delight. Nothing too much trouble. A font of knowleage, and good to chat too. |We would very happily stay again, and recomend anyone to stay here. It was just the perfect romantic getaway treat. Thank you.
