The Belgian Peacekeepers Memorial in Kigali marks an important moment in Rwanda’s history. It stands on the site where ten Belgian UN soldiers were killed in April 1994 while on duty protecting Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana, who was herself killed on 7 April 1994, shortly after the assassination of the president.
The memorial helps visitors understand what happened in the very early days of the genocide and honours the soldiers who lost their lives. Bullet holes and the location of the killings are still visible, making the history tangible and real. It is a quiet place for reflection.
There is no entrance fee, but a small donation to the gatekeeper is appreciated.
