Start to finish, the shipping took 5 months to arrive in the US. We're glad we have the beer, but it was a lackluster experience. Communication around shipping and details were spotty and when we purchased the beer at 3F - we had very little idea how much the shipping (and magical packing fees) would ACTUALLY cost. I'm surprised that 3 Fonteinen and Cantillon support this effort. Hopefully they streamline shipping on their own in the future.
I purchased 220€ worth of beer at 3 Fonteinen (6 750ml, 6 375ml, 3 x 375ml). I signed up for the shipping through BIAB paper form at the brewery, but did not weigh the beer upon purchase and left the beer to be picked up by Kurt. This was a bit unnerving, but I trusted they knew what they were doing.
The communication:
Kurt emailed almost 8 weeks later, explaining the weight is 32kg, and that we would either need to add 4 more 750ml bottles to optimize the 40kg price range or remove two 375ml bottles, to get below 30kg. The cost was outrageous to add bottles. It made sense, but...that could have been better solved for at the brewery if they weighed it. I opted for the latter. He credited me 10 whole euros for the removal of a couple 3F 375mls. Sigh.
Final cost for :
Shipping for 30kg was 100€ + "packing fee" of €60 to east coast of the US.
When all was said and done, communication was a bit sketchy but positive when Kurt actually responded...eventually he provided clarification around the itemized shipping details/questions, prior to the beer being shipped, made modifications to the order almost immediately via email. I wouldn't be in any rush too use this service again. If you're hellbent on getting bottles to the states and are IN Belgium, lug it in your own suitcase. Definitely not worth the hassle. Support your local brewers in the states and enjoy what you can while you're over in Belgium.
Tips:
Just be prepared to pay about 1x what your beer costs were in Belgium. The communication around the shipping costs and schedule left a bit to be desired. Don't expect any correspondence from Kurt until it's convenient for him. Some communication around delivery frequency would have been a nice to have ("Hi, I've received your beer, expect your beer to sit on a shipping container for a few months").
My wife paid €78 for (4) 750ml bottles to be shipped to a friend... shipping(€60) + packing (€20) fees ended up being €80 total cost. Those four bottles did actually arrive quicker, and in a couple months time.
Do multiple small orders of 4 bottles to separate addresses, for this to be most time efficient. The larger orders were probably sitting on a shipping container for months.
