I’m writing this review as a PSA, a “know before you go” regarding the “walk in” campsites. They’re described on the website as “close to the gardens”. For the majority of the campsites that’s simply not true. I stayed in T17 and it’s still a pretty far walk from the gardens AND the bathroom/only water spigot on that side of the campground. On the day I checked in, my steps app said I’d walked 5.5 miles. All that walking was at the campground, and included 4-5 trips back and forth between my car/main part of campground and campsite, and a trip to get water and go to the bathroom. So you can do the math, but I estimate that from the bridge to T17 was about 1/2 mile, each way. The only bathroom and water spigot on that side of the campground is almost all the way back to the bridge, so I’d put that at about 1/3 mile from T17.||When I camped out there, there was only one other family. I could hear them, but couldn’t see them. The campsites are very dispersed and far away from each other. There are no lights out there and very little signage. Have your map with you at all times, or else you’ll really be in trouble. Making that walk by myself at night, a woman alone, was very scary. It’s the stuff Dateline Specials are made of. Also, carting your stuff up there is no piece of cake. You’re not carting your stuff over a straight, flat path. Especially depending on which route you take, its a rocky, windy path up and down hills, with lots of tree roots. ||Under certain circumstances the walk in sites may be perfect for some people (young healthy energetic folks, a group so you feel safe, etc) but I have two gripes: ||1. The website really should clarify how far away the farthest campsites are from… anything, including the lodge and only bathroom/water spigot on that side of the campground. Particularly with the lack of lighting and signage, in this day and age, it’s actually UNSAFE for their guests for them to not disclose that information. The information on the website is very generic for all the tent sites, making them appear somewhat similar. They’re not. There are a couple walk in sites really close to the bathroom. I MIGHT stay in one of those. But IMO the map online is deceiving. That is a LARGE area and most of the campsites are a LONG walk. I wouldn’t describe a lot of them as “walk in” sites, but rather “hike in” sites, especially with the rocky path that you need to haul your stuff over. ||2. The “walk in” sites are ridiculously overpriced. All tent sites - the drive in ones right in the main campground, and the walk in sites - are $40 per night, which would also lead one to believe they’re comparable, when they’re not. With the amount of work it is to haul all your stuff to the walk in site, the lack of amenities (water and bathroom REALLY far away), they should be $25 per night, at the most. Even if they put a couple of outhouses near the far campsites, it would be something. Run another waterline or two so there is closer access to water, THEN.. maybe.. they might be worth something close to $40 per night. But as it is, $40 per night is highway robbery. ||Speaking of the highway and crime… Another bonus… when you’re out there by yourself, with no lights, far away from anybody - you do get a lot of highway noise. It’s literally a true crime documentary waiting to happen. Close to the highway, could get in, do your deed, and get out - nobody would ever even see you. Yup pretty unpleasant to think about, but I feel morally compelled to warn people. Be careful staying in these sites - especially if you’re a woman alone!!!
