I don't understand why this place is so highly rated on Hostelworld because I didn't have a great experience.
Pros:
- Great location - close to many great restaurants, tour companies, shops, cultural experiences like AJAW Chocolate, basically anything you could want that's available in San Ignacio. It's also a 5 minute taxi ride to Cahal Pech.
- Nice hangout area and kitchen - it's open air and has a nice view of town, decent amount of comfortable seating + hammocks and most things one could want in a kitchen (fridge, microwave, dishes, staple foods, utensils, stove, oven, pots and pans, etc)
- Clean - no complaints on cleanliness
- Transportation arrangement service - you can easily arrange shuttles to Flores, Guatemala, Belize City and other popular destinations and they pick you up at the hotel.
Cons:
- Quite loud - mostly if you stay upstairs in the 6 bed dorm. I would definitely not recommend saving a few bucks on it because the bar plays loud music around the clock and that dorm faces the street where there is another bar with loud music at night. However, even in the downstairs 11 bed dorm, you can still hear the music all night.
- Terrible wifi - I mostly just used my data because it was so bad, but if you don't have a Belize SIM card and a lot of people are using the wifi, sucks to be you.
- Unreliable and potentially paper thin mattresses - as far as I can tell, there are a couple beds that have mattresses so thin, you sink to the bottom immediately so it feels like sleeping on a wooden board with mayb.e a tiny amount of padding. My first night, the mattress was fine, but I was moved to a different bunk the second night which had a super thin mattress which left me sore for days.
- Mediocre staff experience - not very professional, disorganized, often hard to find, don't really seem to try to make everyone feel welcome and one guy in particular mostly seemed annoyed to have to answer my questions about services offered.
- No bunk bed ladders. Seems like an accessibility issue.
- They offer lockers, but you have to get your own lock.
