We did the Food & Shopping tour, run by women, with a very young local guide who was not only patient but also very engaging and passionate about her country. She had a wonderful energy when sharing stories—both the good and the bad—and encouraged us to ask all kinds of questions. It was amazing to meet the new generation of Cairenes. She took us to so many charming places where we could see shopping done by local artisans, rather than big brands.
The food everywhere was fantastic, though a bit abundant—by the end of the tour, we were less hungry and ended up eating less, which was a bit of a shame. Perhaps a suggestion would be to ask guests at the start about their hunger level—low, medium, or high—so everyone can choose accordingly and not feel guilty, either about asking for more food if they’re still hungry or leaving some behind. Another option could be to offer smaller portions with the possibility of a second serving.
The only note regarding the food: we would have loved to try a local dish called Koshari (with pasta and rice), which we wouldn’t normally buy from the street, both for hygiene reasons and because the portions are usually very large. A small tasting portion would have been perfect.
I especially loved visiting a local’s home—it was wonderful. It would have been even nicer if our host shared a bit more about life in Cairo, what she enjoys about it, and her personal perspective on the city’s lights and shadows.
