We booked a downtown food tour with Nada, who greeted us with smiles and chat, a quick lesson on how to cross the seemingly wild Cairo roads and told that we'd keep any food we didn't eat to give to people on the streets; I loved this idea and we indeed did as our food was paid in advance for every venue, so the likelihood of some leftovers (despite 2 6'5" lads) was high.
The noisy ,constant chaotic bustle of the streets of Cairo is truly uplifting and the food tour was superb. We went to street vendors, cafes, smoothie makers and restaurants, there's no luxury, the monies the owners spend is on exquisite quality food, generous portions and divine tastes.
We were welcomed wonderfully everywhere we went, from watching how the coffee beans are processed to enjoying a sublime hummus/samosa/halloumi/beetroot and salad pick and mix meal surrounded by well mannered cats, that lounged and didn't beg. It was joyous. And delicious.
Koshari a local favourite is a must, a local and popular dish made from Lentils, Chickpeas, Pasta, Noodles, Garlicky Tomato Sauce and Crispy Onion - its affordable and filling, and pretty damned tasty! We were too busy loving the buzz, the madness and the food to take any pictures.
Do the downtown food tour, you'll learn a lot and eat very, very well.
