9 Places in Vermont to Go Before You Die—or After

"Ben & Jerry might be a couple of ice cream tycoons, but they’ve remained true to their roots. Case in point: the deliciously somber Flavor Graveyard located on the grounds of their factory in Waterbury, Vermont. Opened in 1997, the memorial to bygone flavors was originally an online-only affair, until a handful of resin headstones were mocked up and planted on a hill behind the factory. Like a pet cemetery for punny ice cream recipes, each grave marker was given a clever epitaph that summed up the life and death of the flavor. Dearly de-pinted flavors (Ben & Jerry’s term) include fan favorites like Turtle Soup, Fossil Fuel, and of course, Wavy Gravy. Some of the flavors ended up in the ground due to bad sales, while others met stranger fates. Each of the headstones also bears the birth and death dates of the flavors.  According to their site, there are 34 flavors interred in the Ben & Jerry’s boneyard. Visitors can either take a factory tour which includes a visit to the cemetery, or they can come and pay their respects individually. Luckily, sometimes flavors are resurrected." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

A must stop in the area even if you don't have time for the factory tour. It was great to recall some of the great flavors that have been retired and are no longer available. The flavor graveyard is well maintained and has far less crowds than the main area at Ben & Jerry's.

Great spot to stop by in area and right down the street from Cold Hollow Cider Mill. Even if you don't have a tour you can still stop by, walk around the property, there's an outdoor play area for the kids and the flavor graveyard is always a kick. Beware of long lines to buy ice cream. My group was there Monday around noon and it was down the block. Also beware of huge ditches in parking lot in front of flavor graveyard. Someone got their car stuck in a ditch on the way out of the lot.

Isn't this a great idea. Fun to remember some of the fun flavors. I love the creative headstones. Some even have qr codes to listen to more about the history of that flavor. But once your done don't forget to go have your self a nice serving of current icecream. There is something for everyone with gluten free, dairy free and of course full sugar and yummy ice cream

Such a fun and quirky stop! Loved walking through the Flavor Graveyard and reading all the hilarious tombstones of retired ice cream flavors. Perfect mix of humor and nostalgia — definitely worth a visit if you’re at the Ben & Jerry’s Factory! 🍦🪦

The Ben & Jerry’s Flavor Graveyard is a unique and playful attraction at the Ben & Jerry’s factory in Vermont. It’s a small hillside area designed like a graveyard, with real headstones marking the lives and “deaths” of the company’s retired ice cream flavors. Walking through the graveyard, you can read humorous and sometimes nostalgic epitaphs for each flavor. It’s fascinating to see how long some flavors lasted, which ones gained cult status, and which disappeared almost as soon as they appeared — likely because they didn’t catch on with customers. You also notice that some flavors have come and gone multiple times, making their little tombstones even more interesting to read. One particularly fun detail is the option for visitors to vote on flavors they’d like to see brought back. It’s a small but interactive touch that makes the experience feel more engaging and personal. Overall, the Flavor Graveyard is a charming and quirky stop that adds character to the Ben & Jerry’s visit. Even if you don’t join the factory tour, wandering through this space is a fun and lighthearted experience — especially for those who grew up loving the brand and its inventive creations. It’s a great example of how Ben & Jerry’s mixes humor, nostalgia, and customer connection into their brand culture.

Google
It's a great spot to take a picture, reminisce about old favorites, and maybe even discover a few flavors you never knew existed. While it might sound a bit quirky, the graveyard is a fun and memorable part of the Ben & Jerry's factory tour.

If you want to take the tour definitely get tickets well in advance. The graveyard was fun with real granite headstones and thoughtful epitaphs.

Google
The graveyard is a really cool concept. It’s interesting to see what flavors were retired and how long they were in production. Then you walk down the hill to get some current offerings.

Yelp
Visiting a graveyard of things you once ate hmmm maybe that's not the right thing to say in some circumstances but here I'm all for it! This is a collection of tombstones that feature lots of flavors of the past some of which only had a short lifespan others which should have been resurrected and others it's like why did they make this! Overall this is a huge part of coming to the Ben & Jerry's factory tour so don't miss seeing your favorite flavors in the afterlife!

Yelp
Very cute literal graveyard on the Ben & Jerry property. It's interesting to read about the flavors and when they were sold on each graveyard. It does take a few minutes to walk up from the parking lot or the factory, but it is a must visit while you're there. It can be a quick walk or a longer one, depending how much time you want to spend.

Yelp
Gone, But Not Forgotten [Waterbury VT] This place was fun to visit although I was sad to see Aloha Macadamia in the graveyard [2001-2002]... whaaat? Who doesn't like that rich milk chocolate cashew Brazil-nut butter ice cream with macadamia nuts covered in white & dark fudge & milk chocolatey swirl! LoL! Aloha... Macadamia! At least it lasted a year while some flavors didn't. The main parking lot was full so we parked at the smaller parking lot at the top of the hill and our walk was closer to the graveyard. The Flavor Graveyard rested on a hill overlooking the Ben & Jerry's factory. It was complete with granite headstones and funny epitaphs for each flavor. Not much to see except flavors that were laid to rest. When we left the graveyard the top of the arch read "Thank you for visiting our dearly depinted." Review #3036

Yelp
I mean, after having some ice cream at the scoop shop, why not come over here to see what could have been? The graveyard is a short walk from the factory. I think this is such a cool way to pay homage to flavors that were retired or just too quirky to put on the shelves. It was a cool sight to see! There are no staff to guide you. It is fully self-paced.

Yelp
Make a reservation for the Tour beforehand, but the tours sell out early. There is an outside play area, so if you come with little ones, you can tire them out after they eat all the ice cream. Is it possible to love Ben & Jerry's more than you already do? Dedication to social issues, Fair and equitable trade, and championing local farmers? And then we find out employees can take home up to 3 pints of ice cream daily!

Yelp
Nice family thing to do. Buy tickets in advance - like two weeks out. It sells out quickly. Tour was not of that in live action as it seems the factory has to shut down to clean every few days. Today was one of them. Start with a short video about B and J. Tour the small area of machines then get a sample of ice cream. Your was flat and could have a lot of potential. Boring to see the machines being cleaned. Glad they do it of course but anyway to keep one side operational? Walk over to graveyard of previous flavors was a funny touch with clever sayings. Past a playground for little ones who need to get energy out. Variety of flavors to purchase out front and sit and eat.

Yelp
Poorly run operation. A total money grab. Factory tour was closed, walked up 3 flights of stairs to be told that. Then there's a 20 minute wait at the ice cream counter For a life long B&J fan, extremely disappointed. Poorly staffed knowing more staff = more sales.

Yelp
This is cute! Definitely worth the walk from the factory if you're already there for a tour or ice cream. Some of the flavors are hilarious, and the puns on the headstones are great!

Yelp
Went here with my parents on our Vermont Vacation on August 28th 2023. Since we drove a big truck, we actually parked by the Flavor Graveyard. The flavor Graveyard is actually free to visit, but i recommend also seeing the tour if you can beforehand. The tour guide explains that some of the reasons behind discontinuation/retirement of flavors can be that nuts are too expensive, it didn't sell well, and various other reasons. Surprised to see that Ben & Jerry's never had a cotton candy flavor. maybe they should try that next! The flavor Graveyard consists of Ben and Jerry's flavors that are retired, like Aloha Macadamia, There was a chocolate cookie dough one, and even a birthday cake! At the end of the cementary, there is a sign saying thanks for visiting the depinted!

Yelp
Small graveyard with tombstones for retired flavors. If you are nearby for the factory tour, definitely worth the walk up a rather steep hill. There is a playground for kids nearby.

Yelp
So cute and so very punny. Ben and Jerry your are so cleaver with words and ice cream. This graveyard is located on the property that the factory is on. It's just a short walk over after eating your delicious ice cream and playing on the play ground. When at the factory you just stop and pay your respects to these poor ice creams flavors that didn't make it!

Yelp
The Ben & Jerry's flavor graveyard is exactly what you might expect it to be - a "graveyard" for ice cream flavors that have been discontinued for one reason or another. If you're looking to head over to the flavor graveyard after the factory tour, it is a bit of a trek. Thankfully, there is a small parking lot at the top of the hill. There isn't a whole lot to do other than read the gravestones. Nevertheless, it is a cute attraction perfect for those Ben & Jerry's fans who have been around since these flavors were available in-store.

Yelp
Fun experience! We drove to go on a tour not getting tickets in advance. Really lucked out because there were 2 spots available at 5:30pm. We waited 2.5 hours but it flew by! We got ice cream, long line but moved quickly! Went to gift shop. The went to Waterbury town to look around and saw the old train station from 1800's renovation done in the 90's, which was really cool! Went back for our tour. Tour guide was awesome. Sample ice cream was so good, marshmallow sky. Overall fun time and highly recommend! Graveyard was a cool spot too!
