Our visit to Benanti was a highlight of our time in Sicily. From start to finish, the experience was warm, insightful, and memorable.
Our guide, originally from Canada (though her name unfortunately escapes me), was absolutely lovely. She was deeply knowledgeable—not just about Benanti’s wines, but the entire Etna region. Her passion for the area’s wine culture, history, and geology was contagious. We came away with a real understanding of what makes Etna wines, and Benanti in particular, so unique. Even within a small area, the wines vary dramatically due to differences in soil, elevation, and microclimate. It gave us a new appreciation for how expressive and distinctive these wines can be.
We also learned about the recent eruption of Mount Etna and how events like that shape the future of winemaking. It was fascinating to hear how volcanic activity affects the soil and presents both challenges and opportunities for growers and producers.
The wines themselves were excellent. Each tasting was paired with food that was a pleasant and thoughtful surprise. The dishes were clearly chosen to complement the wines and added an extra layer to the experience.
The winery grounds are peaceful and full of rustic charm, and the overall atmosphere was intimate and welcoming. Every staff member we met was kind, professional, and attentive.
This was a truly enjoyable and enriching experience. If you’re visiting Sicily, Benanti should definitely be on your list!
