Beppu is a 2 hour train ride from Fukuoka. It is a train ride mostly through countryside after passing Kokura Station. The only thing eventful about the ride is that you need to shift your seat to face the other direction at Kokura.
Beppu Station is on the smaller side since the city is small and not as well traveled. Right outside the station, you will find a slightly unusual public statue called "Shiny Uncle" and a hand bath that pays tribute to the onsen culture that Beppu is most known for.
While there are not as many shops at Beppu Station as other cities, there are a good amount of eateries and shops here. There is an excellent grocery store here with a huge selection of inexpensive bentos, desserts and drinks. I did also notice the grocery prices here are lower than what you would pay in Fukuoka.
I like Beppu Station. It is small so it is easy to figure your way around. Easy in and out from this station. Lastly, I would recommend taking a snapshot of Beppu from the station before you leave as it really puts this city in perspective.
