Guide to Bequia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

"Housed in a pair of cottages, this small museum presents exhibits on the island's Indigenous history and its boatbuilding and whaling past; it is run by a dedicated docent and opens only on specific days and hours, so timing a visit is essential." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. This was the best gem of a museum I’ve ever been to. Such a personal experience and the tour and presentation were phenomenal. Suni has a personal relationship to the whaling tradition that was told so well, and Nicola’s presentation on the history of Bequia was so detailed and every bit interesting. A must do for a trip to Bequia if you want to learn! Huge thank you to Nicola and Suni for their time and passion.

Absolutely gorgeous museum! Well curated, with lots of artifacts from the islands history. And it’s air conditioned! Nicola is very knowledgeable and was able to answer any question we had. The garden was a beautiful bonus. Well worth the trip!

The most amazing little museum. The Heritage centre is in 2 buildings, one full of boating bits, the other pottery, pipes and bottles from American Indian times right through the colonial period. There is a really informative PP which highlights how important Bequia was as a safe port; so safe Black Beard refurbished Queen Anne's Revenge here. It also provides a great wider context for the island. The Museum Guide provided even more information, and is both knowledgeable and enthusiastic (passionate even) about the island and it's history. The toilet facilities are clean and the ladies is a 'room with a view' for sure, and there is wheel chair access to everything. The place if professionally set up and a really credit to the Heritage Organisation who have clearly worked exceptionally hard to get this up and running; a proper gem for anyone visiting Bequia. I can't recommend it highly enough. Well worth the entry fee; and wow, the views! I should note it is only open week days

This museum is small, but we'll maintained. The de facto curator was very welcoming and had a wealth of knowledge when she gave us the presentation. The woman who showed us the ships was also friendly and knowledgeable.

We walked to the Museum expecting a few exhibits to wander around but what a pleasant surprise! Firstly we were given a very informative tour around the boats and about the history of whaling on the island, by Suni (a lovely lady who is related to the families she spoke about), and she even sung a calypso to us about when a whale is seen! Then we had a presentation given by Nicola. Nicola is certainly passionate about the history of Bequia and made the talk and presentation a joy to listen to. We learned so much. The maps and artifacts are well laid out and information given, but just ask Nicola if you need a more elaborate answer. Please go to this great place and support their efforts.

Really lovely and informative exhibition about Bequia’s first peoples through modern day. Incredible attention to detail and I really appreciated the perspective of the history reviewed. We walked to the Museum via the beach from Bequia Beach Hotel.

A great place to spend a couple of hours...or more. There are interesting exhibits showing Bequia's ancient history and the more recent whaling history. Nicola does a fascinating presentation and Suni spoke to us about whaling on Bequia, she even sung the "Blows, Blows" song to us! Well worth a visit.
