Guide to Bequia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

"Dating back to the 1950s, this quietly secluded property is a short walk from town but feels tucked away by verdant gardens that hide a handful of villas; the historic main house adds five more rooms and hosts a restaurant and bar that draw both guests and local visitors." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. Bequia Plantation Hotel, Near Port Elizabeth, Bequia - Explore & Book

"Tiny, friendly, laid-back Bequia (7 square miles; population 5,000) oozes Caribbean charm. Part of St Vincent & The Grenadines, the island is a place where locals, expats, visitors and yachties hang out together in what seems like near-perfect harmony. To immerse yourself in the easygoing daily life, you need to base yourself near the thick of things – a relative term for Bequia – and this hotel lets you do just that. Set behind a strip of white sand, it surveys the yacht-dotted anchorage of Admiralty Bay from one end of a waterside path, that leads you past a string of bars and restaurants to Port Elizabeth, Bequia's village-y capital. Originally a plantation, then a hotel which in recent times lay closed for years, the property has been given a gorgeous, contemporary makeover. Its 24 rooms and villas now scatter expansive lawns sprinkled with lofty palms and the odd piece of classical-style statuary, with hammocks strung up between trees. Pale-blue cottages with decorative fretwork gaze out to sea, and a beachfront restaurant cooks up fresh seafood and pizzas baked in a traditional brick oven. In keeping with Bequia generally, staff couldn't be more friendly; one morning, someone appeared at our villa with a present: a juicy mango from the orchard in the grounds. Wonderful. Highs A laid-back atmosphere that appeals to couples and families alike Port Elizabeth's cafés, bars and restaurants are within easy strolling distance, via a scenic waterside path Knock-out views across Admiralty Bay, one of the region's prettiest natural harbours Bequia's best beach (Princess Margaret Beach) is 5 minutes away on foot Inventive, fresh food, especially the pizzas Lows Less privacy than at some other hotels on Bequia The beach in front of the hotel is small and gets busy on cruise-ship visit days The swimming pool is a little small, too We found the WiFi to be a little patchy Mozzies are present, make sure you bring some repellent or cover up in the evenings" - Fred Mawer

This hotel is situated in a natural, picturesque and beautiful location. Close to the main town of Port Elizabeth, close to the best beaches on the island.|The staff are friendly and helpful. |The hotel grounds contain several fruit trees and green spaces.|It is also quite close to the beach front so you can hear the waves from your room.|Internet available throughout the compound.|The rooms are semi-modern with standard basic amenities. The cable television service is not reliable. |The menu options at breakfast are limited (unsure if this is only in the off season).|Overall, this hotel is definitely recommended.

We are currently at the hotel. Been here 4 nights. I have never had such a poor experience in a “5” star hotel. I would put it best as a 2 star. Breakfast. 2 slices of toast, half a frozen mouldy banana 1 slice of mango (if your lucky), a bite of off watermelon all wrapped in clingfilm on the table …. there is a mango tree full of mangos 5m away from the breakfast area. |Eggs are overdone (every day) and I would say this is more a gas station breakfast as selection/quality is shocking. They have Only filter coffee as other machine “broken”.|We had the seafood platter at usd 60. It was a starter portion … tepid and with 3 prawns, a small mahi mahi, 3 clams, 2 scallops. Veg was cold and overdone. No care at all. Again Xavio rescued the day by getting his superiors to give us a pizza on the house as we were still starving. He apologised with the rest of the staff just shrugging their shoulders. |Service is overall bad, with lots of staff just sitting around doing nothing and miserable attitude, usually met with a “don’t have that”, or “no”. However there are 2 very good staff who care (Xavio amazing a younger girl) as they understand about customer care and work hard to make up for the resorts downfall. I feel that there is lack of motivation/management. |If you ask for anything slightly to inconvenience the staff (bar the 2 helpful ones) they try and fob you off with I have to ask my superior (we wanted a table that wasn’t laid one night - we did it ourselves in the end.)|Rooms are clean and working which is a plus side.|Sunbeds are dirty and never wiped down. |A 5 star resort should be 5 star where in or out of season and there seems to be no motivation for staff or guidance even though there are lots of staff present. |I have stayed at many 1 - 5 star resorts and this is possibly a 2 star. Such a shame as it would be so easy to have remedied this.

My stay in cottage 14 over looking the beach at Plantation Inn was one of the most memorable & tranquil experiences I’ve ever had. I highly recommend the Plantation Inn. The Staff are so professional, all my needs were immediately attended to & the Food Breakfast, Lunch and dinner were a delight. To top things off the beautiful white sand and warm turquoise Caribbean ocean was steps away. I’ve already booked another visit. Thank you Plantation Inn.

I recently stayed at Bequia Plantation Hotel , and I can safely say it was one of the worst hospitality experiences I've ever encountered. From the moment I checked in, the customer service was alarmingly poor. I booked their most expensive room, an ocean front cottage. When we got to the room, the view was completely blocked by the restaurant. They said they had no other rooms. I said I would dispute the charge and suddenly they had another room available. It felt as though my inquiries were a nuisance rather than the norm. The exception to the staff was Sherry Anne who was always smiling and helpful. She should train the entire staff. The situation was exacerbated at the hotel restaurant. The waitstaff was lazy and unresponsive, leading to a long and terrible dining experience. I witnessed other guests expressing frustration as well, and it was clear that the staff was unconcerned. I have traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean and understand the laid-back lifestyle. However, the wait time for a restaurant that’s regularly empty is completely unacceptable. The staff stood around and talked while showing their cell phones to each other. We stopped dining there after a couple of similar experiences. My girlfriend and I were not alone with our thoughts. We went on a snorkeling trip with Dive Bequia, which I would highly recommend. While, on board, my girlfriend started talking to two other people who were staying at the hotel. They were disgusted with the staff and were flabbergasted at their hotel experience. Overall, the service was consistently disappointing. The staff appeared unconcerned about guest satisfaction, leaving a lot to be desired in terms of professionalism and courtesy. Given the lack of proper customer service, I cannot recommend this hotel and would suggest looking for alternatives that prioritize guest experience.

The location and property are nice. The staff are awful. They were completely disinterested in supporting us. They should they showed no desire to actually work. This is especially bad because we were one of the only rooms occupied in the entire property. To management and ownership: get competent and hard-working staff.

This was such a beautiful spot. It took a plane an boat ride to get to this little protected spot. Although the beauty of the area and water was 5 stars everything else was such a disappointment. The moment we arrived water bore room booked was not a water view at all. The pool was ancient and the grounds unkept! The food was something you could pass on but the worst was the staff. Unpleasant unfriendly and actually annoyed when you would speak to them. I have been to several places and NO I have NEVER experienced such rudeness. Such a great location but highly recommend staying elsewhere. Several other beautiful hotels we found nearby DONT waste your money.

Bequia was the lunch stop for the Fantasea tour that included Mustique. And it was a very good choice. So here, I am only reviewing the Plantation House Restaurant. While there were about 4-5 choices as part of the tour, my selection was the Curry Chicken with rice and potatoes. The chicken had good island flavor, was tender and bursting with spices. Service was excellent.

The resort was nice, but fell short in a few amenities. The bed/mattress was super comfortable. The location was very good with a nice beachfront and access to a walking path to town, restaurants, and other beaches. Snorkeling off the beach was good, and it was nice to kayak. The beach attendant was nice enough to accompany me out on the small sailboat they had, which was a good idea, as the wind picked up and it was nice to have both of us on board to steer in the higher winds. Some amenities were missing, like a bar of soap or pump soap for the bathroom sink. The shampoos, conditioners, and shower gel while all with the same brand labels, had varying fill amounts and colors. They appeared to be evaporated or refilled. The restaurant was disappointing from slow service, incorrect orders, to lack of basic items. At one meal, 3 sets of salt shakers dispensed No Salt, yet rice kernels came out. The wait staff did not check in to see if things were working. The inconsistent service was consistent at lunch and breakfasts. The food was average to disappointing. Thankfully there are better restaurants within a 5 minute walk. My massage was good, but the spa wasn't very elegant. It lacked the ambience of most spas: no aromatherapy, no water or tea after the massage, and an incredibly hard massage table. The massage therapist was good though. The front desk was good at arranging pickup from and transport to the ferry.
