Guide to Bequia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

"Dating back to the 1950s, this quietly secluded property is a short walk from town but feels tucked away by verdant gardens that hide a handful of villas; the historic main house adds five more rooms and hosts a restaurant and bar that draw both guests and local visitors." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. Bequia Plantation Hotel, Near Port Elizabeth, Bequia - Explore & Book

"Tiny, friendly, laid-back Bequia (7 square miles; population 5,000) oozes Caribbean charm. Part of St Vincent & The Grenadines, the island is a place where locals, expats, visitors and yachties hang out together in what seems like near-perfect harmony. To immerse yourself in the easygoing daily life, you need to base yourself near the thick of things – a relative term for Bequia – and this hotel lets you do just that. Set behind a strip of white sand, it surveys the yacht-dotted anchorage of Admiralty Bay from one end of a waterside path, that leads you past a string of bars and restaurants to Port Elizabeth, Bequia's village-y capital. Originally a plantation, then a hotel which in recent times lay closed for years, the property has been given a gorgeous, contemporary makeover. Its 24 rooms and villas now scatter expansive lawns sprinkled with lofty palms and the odd piece of classical-style statuary, with hammocks strung up between trees. Pale-blue cottages with decorative fretwork gaze out to sea, and a beachfront restaurant cooks up fresh seafood and pizzas baked in a traditional brick oven. In keeping with Bequia generally, staff couldn't be more friendly; one morning, someone appeared at our villa with a present: a juicy mango from the orchard in the grounds. Wonderful. Highs A laid-back atmosphere that appeals to couples and families alike Port Elizabeth's cafés, bars and restaurants are within easy strolling distance, via a scenic waterside path Knock-out views across Admiralty Bay, one of the region's prettiest natural harbours Bequia's best beach (Princess Margaret Beach) is 5 minutes away on foot Inventive, fresh food, especially the pizzas Lows Less privacy than at some other hotels on Bequia The beach in front of the hotel is small and gets busy on cruise-ship visit days The swimming pool is a little small, too We found the WiFi to be a little patchy Mozzies are present, make sure you bring some repellent or cover up in the evenings" - Fred Mawer

My wife & I had pizza there last night. While the restaurant is in a great location, right on the beach, the service was absolutely atrocious! It took 90 mins for our pizza to be served, even though it wasn’t that busy! And the pizza hadn’t even been thoroughly cooked, it was lukewarm at best Aaargh! We will never eat there again!

Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the hotel staff and offered a refreshing welcome drink. Although we arrived early and had to wait until the standard check-in time of 3 p.m. (they had an additional cost for early check-in), the staff made the process smooth and pleasant. Unfortunately, our room initially had alot of mosquitoes, but the staff promptly provided insecticide spray, and that resolved the issue. The room itself was comfortable, with amenities like a mini-fridge, toiletries, and a safe. The hotel’s pool was lovely, and the beachfront was absolutely stunning, with turquoise waters and plenty of beach chairs and huts. They had free water activities like kayaking and snorkeling, and the pool towels were provided as well. We stayed in a room in the main hotel building, not one of the cabanas. Breakfast was included, though during the low season (September), it was served à la carte rather than buffet style to minimize waste (this should have been stated before) While the options were delicious, they did become a bit repetitive, and vegetarian choices were somewhat limited. Dinner at the hotel was excellent, with attentive staff and a variety of tasty options, from pizza to seafood and pasta. Everything that we ate from the restaurant was delicious. The brownie is the best, it's made from St Vincent chocolate and was absolutely divine. The staff were always accommodating and courteous, even though the hotel was quieter during this period. One downside was the presence of stray animals, like cats and dogs, in the dining area. While the staff tried to manage them, it’s something to keep in mind if you’re not comfortable with animals. They also cleaned the seaweed periodically from infront of the hotel.

We recently stayed at the Bequia Plantation Hotel, which is set on a stunning, lush green property. We loved that all the suites are located on the ground floor, and our ocean-facing room offered a lovely view. The hotel provides free use of water sports equipment, such as paddle boats, which was a nice amenity. The staff was very helpful and always accommodating. The hotel's location is ideal for exploring. You can take a short, pleasant walk along the beach to reach the town center and the ferry to the mainland. A practical tip for fellow travelers from the US: St. Vincent uses a different electrical currency, so remember to bring a power converter. Regarding dining, we found the on-site restaurant to be quite expensive with a limited menu. For more variety, we recommend exploring the many other restaurants that are within walking distance in the town center.

We spent four nights at Bequia Plantation Hotel, and while our stay began with a few bumps, we ultimately left feeling deeply relaxed and convinced this is a truly special place. First and foremost, the property itself deserves major recognition. This is an absolute AAA location. Set right in Bequia, it is walkable to town, an easy and fun cab ride to everything else, and perfectly positioned near Admiralty Bay and local restaurants. The setting is tranquil and beautiful. You have sand literally behind the pool, lush tropical landscaping, and charming cottage style plantation rooms that surround you in a historic, colonial atmosphere. The entire property feels thoughtfully maintained and quietly elegant, with all the modern amenities you would want, while still preserving a beautifully authentic tropical character. Once we settled in, the service really came together and reinforced how much this place cares about the guest experience. We arrived pretty swamped and travel weary, and the management team listened, responded, and handled things with professionalism and genuine care. Chris and Janelle in particular deserve recognition for turning an imperfect start into a stay that felt personal and restorative. The restaurant team was excellent. Food was consistently very good, and it was delivered with warmth and smiles even when they were clearly busy. The bar staff were always speedy and friendly, which added to the relaxed, vacation feel of the property. Housekeeping was impeccable throughout our stay. The room was made up perfectly every day, always on time, always discreet, with lovely turndown service each evening. It added a real sense of calm and understated luxury. By the end of our stay, we felt completely at ease. This is a hotel with a rare combination of location, character, and people who genuinely want guests to leave happy. We would absolutely recommend Bequia Plantation Hotel and hope this review helps bring them the attention and business they deserve.

We absolutely loved this hotel, our room was in the main house overlooking the the bay, a stunning view and a beautiful sunset every evening. The room had a 4 poster bed, which was very comfortable, the room was immaculate and cleaned thoroughly every day. We loved the restaurant, breakfast was very good, always cooked fresh. Evening meals were also very good but the service was sometimes a bit slow, but this was not a problem to us.|The staff , from reception to the bar & restaurant were excellent, friendly and so helpful, Lenore the head barman makes the best mud slides and was always served with a smile, I mustn’t forget lovely Janice, and Heidi both looked after us really well. |If you want to wander into town or eat at other restaurants on the island, there is a walkway from the hotel with just one or two steps here and there but easily managed .|Bequia is a beautiful island and it is good to remember that it isn’t commercialised and therefore service may be a lot slower than you are use to, but the people are warm and friendly and we will definitely come back

The rooms are great and in a beautiful and well maintained location. However, I had a claim for a damaged and had to return to the property per their request to show proof. Then the food at the restaurant is never up to par. Not the mushroom toast that is just straight from the can and not sauteed, the local breakfast does not taste local. The saltfish is dry and not salt. Great service but not at the restaurant.

1. LOCATION 5 stars|2. ACCOMMODATION 4 stars - clean; only melamine dishes so microwave was useless; no coffee/basics in room; shower drainage issues|3. RESTAURANT 2 stars - overpriced, extremely slow and disorganized, mediocre food|4. SERVICE 2 star - The check-in staff were uninterested and seemed like we were bothering them by trying to check in. We prepaid and they tried to tell us we didn't. Overall the service was very slow and lackadaisical throughout the stay. We've stayed on many Caribbean islands and very much enjoy a slower pace... this was not a slower pace, this was completely disorganized and lacking any effort. Holiday Inn has 5 star service in comparison to the service here |5. INCIDENT - There are friendly communal dogs and cats around the island. One morning during breakfast a random guy stabbed a dog on the beach near the hotel restaurant. We and other guests spent a few hours trying to help the injured dog - called the police, the local vet, crawled under a deck to provide food and water. A staff member made sure to let us know that it happened on the beach and not their responsibility, and that they could do nothing about it. Several guests of the property spent hours to help the injured dog (on hotel property), without any apparent interest or assistance from hotel staff. One staff member made sure to tell me that I should not have used the hotel ice bucket to give the bleeding dog water. Apparently the ice bucket was too important to take outside.

This was by far the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. On my very first day, I had to switch rooms three times—the first room’s lock didn’t work, the second room had bugs, and the third was only slightly better. What made the experience worse was the staff. Only about three employees were professional and genuinely helpful, but the rest were extremely unprofessional. I had to stress my concerns over and over just to get a clear response, and most of the time it felt like what I said was ignored or not taken seriously. Instead of assisting paying guests, many staff spent their time gossiping with each other while customers were left waiting and frustrated. The rooms are not what they appear to be online, and almost every interaction with staff left me more disappointed. It’s exhausting when you spend your hard-earned money and get nothing but stress, dismissiveness, and poor service in return. I would strongly advise avoiding this hotel. Save yourself the headache and choose a place that actually respects its guests and provides basic hospitality.
