I wouldn't call this a youth hostel -I stayed four nights with my 22 year old son and most of the guests were 30 or over. Couples, singles, only one family with small children and quite a few 50+ travelers. Lots of Italians but a variety of languages. It's not "close" to the airport- 15-20 minute drive (we rented a car), probably 45 minutes plus by bus.
Clean, comfortable beds, has a kitchen you can cook in (no oven) but cook before 7 pm or there won't be room. Our last night some idiots burned what they were cooking and the smoke alarm tripped a fire alarm for the entire building at 8 pm. The idiots in the kitchen just laughed. Not pleasant to say the least.
The "breakfast " is: coffee, white bread rolls, croissants (known as brioche in Bergamo), plain yogurt, sliced cheese (bland), sliced ham, butter, granola, choc. cereal, cornflakes, two kinds of jam, honey, chocolate spread and juice. There's milk and soy drink. No fruit. No vegetables. No whole wheat bread or toaster. No hot cereal or eggs.
Good value for money and very helpful staff! You can buy a 24 hour bus ticket for Bergamo only (which includes the funicular) at the front desk which is a good idea to explore Citta Alta.
There was hot water and good water pressure and the towels are large enough to cover a person who is 180 cms tall (about 5 ft, 10 inches).
I took off a star because even though I asked for two twin beds (and received an email confirmation that my request was received) we had a double bed the first night. We were moved to a room with three single beds for the rest of the time but one bed had to be moved away from the wall in order to open the door to the room! Also it was too hot!! Which is clearly better than too cold in a mountain town in Northern Italy in February but still was a little dehydrating.
