Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel (Asbury Park, New Jersey) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel, built by the same team behind Grand Central Terminal, harks back to a rather rosier era for the Jersey Shore, when well-to-do beachgoers booked their vacations in Beaux-Arts landmarks. The Berkeley still retains that luster, especially in its red-brick façade and light-flooded public spaces. Upstairs, rooms remain sophisticated and modern, with plush linens and patterned textiles in coastal colorways. An outdoor pool, complete with cabanas and a tiki bar, offers a private respite from the boardwalk action." - Tablet Hotels

What a phenomenal trip. I was there volunteering on the staff for a symposium and the entire weekend was such a wonderful experience. Decent, moderately priced food inside the hotel itself, the staff were some of the kindest people I've ever met in hospitality, and their event team was completely on their game. There's also a Salon attached to the hotel and accessible through the lobby. I didn't need a cut, but the people working there seemed as polite and friendly as the rest of the crew. The space is good for weddings, conferences, symposiums and any other potentially large gathering. The town itself is freaking beautiful - the beach is a block from the hotel, there's a boardwalk with a playground and old fashioned arcade nearby, a record store, a bowling alley, plenty of entertainment and food options. My only complaint is that one of the lamps in our room (817) didn't have a switch. Like... it fell out or was pulled out. We just unplugged it for the weekend. One of the electrical outlets in the room was a super loose fit for most of our chargers, too. Amenities in the room are an ice bucket and free water bottles, the basic lineup in the bathroom, and cable TV. I do wish they had water bottle refill stations in the hotel common areas and by the ice machines, but the age and infrastructure of the building make sense as to why. The rooms were a bit on the pricier side, though that appears to be a theme throughout the rest of the town. It definitely requires thorough planning to enjoy your trip - the bill can add up quickly if you're not careful. Street parking in the off season was a very reasonable rate. Valet was a bit pricey for my agenda and wallet.

I had high hopes for this resort but it was disappointing. This was our first time in Asbury Park. The hotel is convenient to the beach and boardwalk. We stayed in the off season for 2 weeknights and 2 weekend nights; the staff during the weekend were remarkably friendlier than the staff we first encountered. The room was surprisingly big and comfortable, but there was an issue with the room my mother stayed in (the faucet in the shower fell off!) Mostly I was surprised how few amenities there were for it being a resort. On our last day we went to the pool; the front desk staff person directed us to where it was, but there were no towels and no staff. A very kind woman in the restaurant brought us towels when I asked. Soon after, what appeared to be the owner of the hotel came outside with 6 or so staff members, and he berated them for the state of the pool. Some staff began vacuuming the pool, but the berating when on for 30 minutes or more. It was incredibly awkward, especially because no one acknowledged us at all, sitting just a few feet away. Only one staff person later sought us out to apologize. Overall, the hotel was sad. I imagine it could reach its potential with new management, but I can’t recommend it. A hotel should only charge resort prices if it is indeed a resort. This, sadly, is not.

Google
Perfect Beachside Stay! I had a wonderful stay at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel! The location truly can’t be beat — it’s just steps from the beach and the Asbury Park boardwalk, which made it super convenient to take morning walks along the ocean and enjoy the local restaurants and shops. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful from check-in to checkout. They made me feel very welcome and went out of their way to answer questions and offer recommendations. The overall atmosphere was relaxed yet elegant, which made for a really comfortable experience. My room was clean, spacious, and had that classic charm the Berkeley is known for. I also appreciated how easy it was to get around — everything from the beach to nightlife was just a short walk away. If you’re looking for a place that’s close to the beach, has a great staff, and gives you that perfect coastal getaway vibe, I highly recommend the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel!

I’m local and have stayed here a few times, plus spent plenty of time at their great events, shows, pool, and the bar — and I’ve never had a bad experience. So when something went wrong with my apartment, this was the first place I ran to because I knew I’d be taken care of and most importantly, my dog would be welcome. Benito was professional, attentive, and truly went above and beyond to make a rough day so much better. Even on a busy Friday with a large event, he made sure to take utmost care. I’m so grateful for the kindness and consistency every time I come here. I’ll be sending my friends and family here when they visit — and I’ll definitely stay here myself if I ever move out of town. A truly magical local gem, loaded with history, classic style, in the best location, and most importantly — backed by genuinely stand-up service.

We had the greatest time at the Berkeley Hotel. We arrived on a Wednesday and there was ample street parking although they do offer valet. Check in was quick and simple and we were up in our room within 15 minutes. Our room was clean with a beautiful view of the entire boardwalk as well as ocean. You could see all right from bed! The big windows provided so much natural light and we were pleased how large our room was because we were traveling with children. We enjoyed that the hotel was a more luxury feel but was still kid friendly. Our boys enjoyed the coy ponds and it was convenient to get food from the cafe. Proximity to the beach and boardwalk was perfect for us.

Google
Front desk folks were great! Hotel is pet friendly. Lots of issues though hence I won’t go back. For the price one would expect a descent coffee bar in the am and not with coffee Mate. Breakfast before 10 am would’ve been nice to know before making the reservation. Thank goodness for the coffee cafe in the paramount bldg across the street. Elevator creaked. The room was ok however didn’t have 3 prong outlets to charge a laptop.

Google
The hotel itself is fine, a glorious and historic building that is nicely renovated, filled with interesting stories. You absolutely cannot beat the location, steps away from the beach and the legendary Asbury Park Boardwalk. The staff were all friendly and accommodating. The room itself was nice, but our curtains had holes in them and there is not much room to spread out. The frustrating park of staying here are the hidden fees that you don’t find out about until arrival and checkout. Parking is not included and street parking is $50 a day. Valet parking is even more expensive. Your stay does not include beach access or breakfast. To top that off, you are charged a “resort fee” after your stay, not quite sure what that covers since beach access and parking is separate. My frustration is in thinking you are paying the advertised price only to be hit with fees after the fact. Again, it is a nice hotel but I’m failing to see what qualifies this as a “resort”.

Google
The location of the hotel was great. The hotel is very clean and beautiful. The staff was friendly and welcoming. My only complaint was the room next to me 512 had a few kids and they had absolutely no control of the kids. Screaming, yelling, slamming the door. It went on from 7am until 1am. I didn’t get much sleep or rest. Other than that it was a very pleasant experience.

Yelp
We stay here several times a year, every year. (And yes, we've tried the other hotels in the area.) our stay is always enjoyable! The staff and guests are always happy, nice and accommodating. And generally provide upgrades if available. We've gotten countless oceanfront views as a recurring guest. If we turn the AC off for too long, there is a bit of a musty smell but its easy to attribute that to the ocean air and moist atmosphere. Aside from that, the beds are SO comfortable, and the rooms are generally very clean. Recently, fridges have been added to every room which has been very helpful. Other than that the rooms always feel clean and comfortable, and the food at the cafe, restaurant and pool is always amazing! Notably, the lobster roll here is better than any in the area. We are looking forward to our next stay!

Yelp
Very rarely do I give a one-star review, but this hotel truly deserves it. For the price they charge, you'd expect professionalism and basic competence--neither were delivered. While we were in our room getting changed, the door suddenly opened and a family of four walked right in. We immediately shouted, and they left. I called the front desk and, after being put on hold, the manager casually told me we "must have left the door propped" because "no one else has access to your room." Not only was this untrue--I heard the key scan when the door opened--but the dismissive response showed zero concern for guest safety. At the very least, they should have reissued new keys. When I called back, the truth came out: the bellman admitted he gave the family access and swiped them into our room. So rather than acknowledging fault, the manager chose to shift blame onto us. The message from this hotel is clear: "accidents happen, deal with it, or leave." That attitude might fly at a budget roadside motel, but not at a property charging luxury rates. If you value safety, privacy, and even a shred of accountability, do yourself a favor--stay far away. This was a disgraceful experience, and I will never return.

Yelp
Two star average is correct for this hotel. A few pros: + Really cozy beds. We were upgraded to a king ocean view which was kind. + Decent pool for the area. + Absolutely incredible bacon egg and cheese in the cafe in the morning. Truly delish - good cold brew as well. + Great location with proximity to the Stone Pony if you're there for a concert and the beach if you're there to enjoy the sand. + Easy parking. No need to valet just park nearby. Some areas for improvement: + Not the cleanest hotel I've been to. Windows to "ocean view" were super teeny and you could more or less not see out of them. + Outrageous policy of not being able to check in early without a fee. Our room was ready and they would not give it to us unless we paid $50. + They will nearly double prices for high volume weekend. What was paid for the hotel was outrageous and far too high for the level of maintenance the hotel needed. This is a fine option for one night only! Quirky hotel in a quirky city.

Yelp
Funky smell, but with the Atlantic Ocean at your doorstep and great service, there's a sunny side. The moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by a distinct dank smell that lingered throughout the building, especially the room air conditioning. It's not overwhelming but it's noticeable, so it can be off-putting. However, what the hotel lacks in freshness, it makes up for in location and service. While the staff is friendly and available, the real star is the oceanfront view. It's such a treat to wake up to sunrise and ocean views. Plus, this hotel's just a few steps from the Asbury Park boardwalk and beach and right by the iconic Wonder Bar, Convention Hall, and Stone Pony. It's also within walking distance of tons of dining options and shops, so there's no shortage of things to do and places to eat. If you can overlook the slightly musty atmosphere, this hotel offers fantastic ocean views and boardwalk vibes that might make your stay worth it. NOTES/TIPS: **Hotel parking is expensive like $75/day. Try to get a spot on the street about 50 ft from the hotel entrance in Zone 33300 for around $35 that uses ParkMobile app. Be mindful on the app for overnight parking. Consider keeping your car there during your whole hotel stay and ubering to places further away. **Attached restaurant at ground level (Azure) has a full bar, great decor, and good service. Food is pretty good. Live music on the weekend.

Yelp
Came to Azure for the Color and Light Festival after party. Nice location, nice staff considering the chaos, and to me, just the right size to not lose the company you came with. The venue is beautifully decorated with lots of IG worthy photo spots IF you could wrestle through the crowd. Prices were on the high side but that's to be expected.

Yelp
The "Beautiful Berkeley" -- classic hotel, VERY classy, real old-school charm! Room was FANTASTIC, bed was perfect (best sleep, so quiet, nobody bothers you). Just tremendous. Would DEFINITELY stay again, no question about it. Only problem? Valet--WAY too expensive, ridiculous. Fix that and you've got a TOTAL winner! PLUS THEY LET DOGS IN!

Yelp
This review is about (AZURE),The restaurant at the ground level, Not the hotel. What can I say. The food order was late.Missing bacon. When it arrived it was old reheated by a microwave. And the bill had 4 food orders instead of 2. Tip was also included in check. A+ for interior and exterior decorations.

Dotti E.

Yelp
Oh Berkeley hotel/restaurant, we have eaten at the many, various, iterations of your restaurants and they always fail. We had wonderful food back in 2018/2019, in the big restaurant inside. But not since then. We tried last year's version - our bill showed as "Johnny and June", though the name had changed. First issue, you NEED umbrellas outside. You NEED to have them if you expect anyone to sit outside. And if no one is outside, it's less likely anyone will venture inside. Last year we waited forever for our food. Then it was wrong. Our server, the manager?, complained that he's too busy (with maybe 5 tables taken). He took our food back, we waited again. Our same food came back cooked longer - no compensation for the error. Not even an apology. Other than that, what can you do? Tie in with AP brewery, Georgie's?, the distillery? and have events? In any case, I hope this new restaurant is successful! Get umbrellas!!!!!!! And reading through the reviews, I see they give no responses to anyone, on anything, so apparently, they don't read them. So they don't learn and they are doomed to continually fail.

Yelp
Very friendly And helpful front desk we were there off-season so nothing was open. That was the only downfall no restaurants. Nothing was open at all very beautiful old hotel. Remind me of the 50s or 60s. But the view was awesome. The beach was right across the street. The parking was hard other than that can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Anthony D.

Yelp
Room covered in ants. Informed the front desk twice and was told they would send someone up. That didn't happen nor did housekeeping ever come in 2 days. Sent a letter to the hotel and asked to speak to manager on site - neither got a response.

Yelp
I stayed for one night. The hotel curtains. Aside from the stains on the curtains they were inoperable. The view was nice but the curtains would not close all the way. There was a screw in the curtain frame blocking it leaving approximately a foot gap. At night I had no issues but around 430am when the sun began to rise the entire room was lit up. This made it near impossible to sleep past 5am. Paying for a nice hotel in this area I was expecting to get nice rest. Didn't happen that morning. When I brought it up to the front desk I was advised they could only remove my $28 resort fee due to the fact I didn't report the issue at checkin. Annoying. I didn't realize there was an issue until I was unable to sleep and 5am and there was no point to reporting it at that hour due to the fact we were checking out at 11. Additionally room clean up knocked on the door at 11:01 while we were about to walk out to make sure we were leaving. Never happened to me before. Additionally with regards to the area I parked. Due to the parking prices I decided to street park to save a little money. I parked right next to the valet parking lot because I figured it would be easier to access the hotel because there is a door there for people to go back and forth from their vehicles. Unfortunately for me the door was closed for the day, which I received no reason for. I then had to hike around the hotel to go through the main entrance with all my belonging which made for an annoying start. Other than that the hotel was very nice. The lobby was done up very nicely. The pool area was great. The beach is right there and perfect access from the hotel! If you stay here just make sure your curtains close because it will get bright in there before you know it!

Yelp
We stayed two nights for Pride. One night, we went to the bar to order food. Worst decision - the sandwich we ordered was two slices of toasted bread with a piece of bacon and the saddest shred of lettuce you have ever seen. Disgraceful and unappetizing. Waste of $15+ dollars. The restaurant should just say no food after 7pm.

Yelp
Your manager Jonalyn Ramos is absolutely rude, unaccommodating, and not even helpful whatsoever. I was promised by a nice associate at like 11am today to get a call back. Unfortunately, I was unaware that they have a 7 day cancellation policy (7 days!) - and I was trying to rebook my stay with them to waive this. I attempted to do so, and Jonalyn was not helpful at all and gave me no capabilities to do so. She did not read my email at all and just said the request was denied (denied that I can't make another reservation?!) She didn't listen to me at all, had no plan on listening to what I was going to say, and above that - she declined to offer me any resolution on the issue whatsoever. I've been calling nonstop for the past 3 days trying to fix the issue, along with my company's travel booking agent - and they were unable to reach anyone as they don't pick up the phone. It's frustrating, and downright annoying to work with this hotel.

Yelp
We attended the Robert Francis magic show at the Berkeley. Fantastic show in a nice intimate setting. The room was great and the bar was right outside the door for a drink before the show or at intermission. The show was funny and magical. It was a great evening. We'll be back to bring other friends to see the show.
google avatar

Marco P.

Yelp
Every time we come we see Curtis. I should have written this a while ago...his hospitality is above and beyond. The nicest guy ever! Whatever you need he's there. He works security but he does it all! Berkeley Hotel is lucky to have him!!!!!

Rachel B.

Yelp
Everything other than the folks at the front desk was horrible. This is NOT a hotel that should be charging over $700 a night. We had to change rooms because of the awful smell and decrepit furniture. They kindly changed us to a room with an ocean view which had more worn out and broken furniture. . That said, you could see the ocean as well as bags of construction debris and a pile of broken ladders on the roof below. We probably wouldn't have been this disappointed if we were paying $100 per night. Nonetheless, this is a classic case of "you DON'T get what you pay for". We will definitely never stay here again. Did I mention the $100 a night parking/valet fee?

LT V.

Yelp
Location is great, but parking is outrageous. On a weekday it was $75 per day in the lot & $39 per day on the streets that immediately surround the building (zone 33300). You can walk a little bit further to a different zone to pay less. Interior wise, the lobby and ballrooms in this hotel are beautifully kept, but the rooms are not well maintained and are falling into disrepair. Drapes are tattered, windows filthy with screens hacked out, furniture is water stained and chipped, lampshades/sconces crooked on all lights, closet door off track, grout missing from tile next to tub, bath faucets falling off wall, AC vents are bent, electrical outlets not working, etc. There seemed to be a lack of signage throughout the hotel and the room did not include any info on hotel amenities. The pool was a bit shabby.. chairs rusted and dirty. They have the cabanas roped off but everything is faded and just kind of sad looking. For the money this place charges its patrons, they should be able to afford updates!!

Aryssa S.

Yelp
Less than zero. They cancelled my booking that I made over a month ago. They never tried to call me. Just sent me an email saying they tried to charge my card, which they never did. Because I booked third party and it's such a popular weekend they could make more money if they booked through themselves.

Donald C.

Yelp
we arrived early at 12:30 pm. Room check in is 4pm. Although a room was ready, we were told we would be charged an additional $50 to check in early. This would be on top of the $486.00 already charged. There was no supervisor available to allow us the room and they did not offer to call anyone. The nearby Asbury Hotel has no such policy and you can check in early if a room is available. This hotel has lost our business. We will be using The Asbury going forward. This is no way to treat a longtime customer.

Lisa D.

Yelp
I stayed here water is warm not even close to hot not very attractive tv controls are taped together outlets are an electrical hazard!!! I told the front desk and it was never addressed Not worth the money

Criselda A.

Yelp
First night, tv had no signal, they did send someone to fix it. Cable signal restored but unable to watch anything for 2 straight minutes due to static interference. The following night- same problem and cable channels still static. Finally my TV was replaced and cable news working well. Room is large and ocean view is fantastic. Dont ask for anything more- bed, tv, bathroom- that's all there is. No in room coffee maker, no pen and notepad- none of those little things you find in a normal hotel. My biggest mistake was that I didn't look at Yelp to check reviews for this hotel. I did write to customer service about my issue 4 days ago and NEVER got a response as of yet. I can definitely say that I am not happy with this hotel at all.
google avatar

Zed A.

Yelp
Meh. Over $400 night and it was just okay. Pros Good location just across street from beach. Away from all the noise from clubs / bars in AP. Rooms clean and smelled good. Cons It's an older, well-worn hotel that's leveraging location but in need of rehab. They've spent more on lobby than anywhere else. A lot of lipstick on a pig. Beds are uncomfortable. Air conditioning runs all night. No coffee makers in room and long wait for coffee in morning. Pool turned into a night club at noon and was VERY loud. Odd ambiance considering it was mostly families at pool. My girlfriend and I had to shout at each other to communicate. Not conducive to relaxing, reading a book, etc. Went back to room and could still hear music blaring.
google avatar

Victoria D.

Yelp
Staff was friendly. Room was ok. A bit weird trying to figure out where the thermostat was (in the corner) and how the lights worked (but props for technological lights - you have to enter your key into a port and you can turn the lights on and off). Went to check out and said I would get an invoice. They confirmed my email with me, but never got it. Called the next day to ask for it again and the woman asked my email again and said I would get the email shortly. Never received it

Yelp
The view that we got from our room really helped this review a lot. Pros: location to the beach/boardwalk, location to the shops in town, very kind hotel staff, bike rack parking, you can bring your bike up to the room, AC definitely works and the room gets freezing cold Cons: the rooms need serious updating: outlets don't all work, lightbulbs don't all work, stains on curtains, holes in lampshades, peeling wallpaper, shower curtain broken, furniture is ripped/worn, the parking fee is pretty outrageous (depending on the size of your car, you could be paying up to $85 a night if you drive a truck, otherwise I think the smallest car pays $65 a night) This is a dog friendly hotel- so that could be a pro or con. We personally didn't experience dog hair/smell or much barking. Pool: didn't get to fully enjoy it because we went on a fairly windy day and didn't stay outside for long, but it is very average - small fenced in backyard feel that has a bar with food service (the food actually looked and smelled pretty good). I had a mocktail that was very tasty. We had the pizza, but ate inside. Also pretty tasty! Tip: street parking right outside of the hotel is $3/hour and you only have to pay 9am-2am, so it ends up being cheaper than the hotel valet parking - if you are arriving on a Friday/weekend...good luck finding a spot We had a room that on one side you could look down the street and see the Wonder Bar and then on the other side look at the ocean. It was a perfect Asbury Park view. With this said, the summer prices you pay for these rooms are not very worth it. It definitely needs some major renovations to match the prices.
google avatar

Kathy H.

Yelp
Charming hotel. I liked it overall. A lot of places to explore including nooks, ballrooms and bars. It definitely has a spooky feeling that genuinely fits with the essence of Asbury Park. I thought it was comfortable but maybe the surfaces could be a little cleaner and the decor and furniture could be updated.

Kat M.

Yelp
The valet men were very sweet and attentive. Lu's cafe owner was highly personable and sweet. The vibe was super positive. I stayed in room 808 and no complaints except mattresses are too hard. The main complaint was the bartender on Saturday night January 18th. He was the only dude there at 1:20 when a rush came in. It was hard so I am not single-ing him out for his work but he completely lost his shit at me because he misunderstood what I said - I asked him if it would help I could come behind the bar and take orders for the food and give to kitchen so he can churn out drinks. I was in the middle bar and the third person there when he served everyone down at the end who just walked in - he had no backup but there is literally no reason for him to yell so our party left. I reported to the manager that night because he scared me

Yelp
This place has clearly seen better days. Upkeep seems pretty minimal and it appears they just run a skeleton crew to maintain things. Staff were otherwise friendly. The restaurant/cafe/bar/convenience store provide what's needed and are ok but with close proximity to other options you're likely better just walking over to the convention hall for all its vendors. It does have the convenience of proximity but beyond that the parking situation is pretty ridiculous and was overpriced for what it is. The rooms feel like a typical convention center/business hotel decor from the early 2000s. Our windows had cut up/torn screens and the shower faucets were questionably attached. Clean but in poor condition. Overall it was a matter of pricing that had us stay here, but there are probably much better options.

Brian R.

Yelp
The only good thing about this hotel is the location .It is overpriced, dated, parking costs are outrageous, and the rooms always smell musty (this is the second time we've stayed here) Also, the doors/walls are paper thin. There were awful guests in the room across the hall who were loud all night long and I couldn't sleep because I could hear everything. Will not be coming back to this musty old hotel anytime soon

Art M.

Yelp
Dangerous hotel. I was traveling with 3 kids. I Booked this hotel after my flight was canceled. It was the last room they had right off of the ballroom where there was a convention. Room was dirty and the air conditioner was in pieces when we got in. Chemical and other thing where stored in the AC/heater location which is very dangerous (picture attached). They had no other room so I requested a refund and they only gave me a partial. The GM Laura never called me back after 5 days of calling and leaving messages. Horrible service and horrible room.

Mara S.

Yelp
Terrible! The room carpet was wet when I arrived, none of room pugs did not work (struggled to charge my phone), and the TV would stop working every 20 min. This hotel is extremely overpriced (more than $500 per room/per day) and got a bunch of additional charges for parking ($75/night) and use of the pool (more than$30/day). The service in their restaurant (AZURE) was terrible too. The service person forgot to pick up my order and they gave it to someone else and had to wait over an hour to eat. They added the 20% tip to the bill so I had no way to protest. The only two things that are ok are the location and the security man, doorman, and car parking kids.
google avatar

Stefanie A.

Yelp
Idk why this gets two stars. I do know why it doesn't get five. Here are the pros; - location across from the beach - amenities like pool, pool and ping pong tables, free (good) coffee - nice staff - price - comfy beds and quiet, large rooms (Esp compared to other nearby locations) Cons -rooms get stuffy and nothing dries because there's nowhere to hang wet things - overall nice rooms but a couple minor things are broken like the closet door is off the track and our lamp knob is almost twisted off - valet parking is egregious at $70 for an suv - it's mostly updated but still old and there are cracks and slipping patching jobs We've stayed here twice and at another local hotel which is newer and has better amenities, but we still chose this one again. And will again.

Yelp
Cannot speak for the hotel but we attended a birthday party today that hit it out of the park! There were about 70 people in attendance, full bar with a Bloody Mary area, terrific brunch buffet and a drag queen for entertainment (Divinity. I think). Only in Asbury .., The bar was fully staffed and they were efficient and friendly. The ingredients for Bloody Marys were extensive. Food ran the gamut from delicious canapés to a fully stocked omelet bar to beef and chicken sliders to tater tots with cheese and bacon to mini desserts. The food was catered by The Berkeley Oceanfront and the party was held in the John and June room (as in Johnny Cash). This was a terrific party and the staff are to be congratulated! The hotel lobby and party rooms looked great.

Ken B.

Yelp
To say that this hotel is past its prime is a vast understatement. I guess because they are right next to the boardwalk, they don't feel that they have to maintain the place at all. The furniture was old and the upholstery was ripped. The place feels like you walked back into the 1970's but not in a good way. Time to renovate this place or close it down. I would not return there nor would I recommend that anyone stay there. The highlight was Dan at the front desk who could not have been friendlier or more helpful. He is the only shining light in a dull and decrepit hotel.

Yelp
Stayed at hotel from July 14th til 17th for my 47th birthday. Stayed many time before never really had issue like this and it's upsetting and disgusting. Out mattress was uncomfortable on day 1 and day 2 Saturday requested our room to be serviced 5X nothing. Again restless not with mattress on Sunday morning took sheet off and discovered urine and fical stain on both side of the mattress. The GM had no interest to fix it and took 4 hrs on a rain Sunday and had to wait on the rain In our vehicle because we had our service dog. Weekend was completed ruined asked to get accommodation for the 2 nights but thru Expedia hotel only said they would credir one night. Will never stay at the place ever again. Here are photos of the mattress with urine and etc stains

Yelp
Great location. Room was clean and comfortable. The place has seen better days. For example, the chair in the room was cracked from wear. The desk and side tables had water stains. But that was minor stuff. The staff were helpful with requests and questions. Parking on street is less expensive.

Yelp
this place is a rip off... the people at the front desk were miserable . i stayed in a suite and payed a lot of money.. no sheets no blankets had to call the front desk twice they also make u pay 75 dollars for early check in and 60 dollars to valet park after you already ate spending a to. if money .they over charged my credit card . the entire stay was a disaster. The only thing that was great was the breakfast from LULUS .. delivered to the room .. Staci was amazing !! I would not recommend the hotel to anyone .. it was way overpriced and for what you were spending should have been ALOT better. the hotel was not accommodating at all.. terrible

Yelp
Do yourself a service and do NOT eat at the hotel restaurant Azure. I think they spent too much time on the cheap looking decor, and less on training staff on running a restaurant. Food took over an hour to come, table was a mess, lack of staff, chicken wings had a feather sticking out of it. 6 of my family members took ONE BITE out of 6 different entrees and couldn't continue eating any of them. Food quality was quite literally comical. Thought it was a prank. Waitress was great - not her fault- but omg.

Yelp
We arrived at The Berkeley on Friday afternoon and were told that they had no AC. We were informed at that moment that we could cancel our reservation with no penalty. This news came after the fact that we drove down from Bergen County. The AC problem began on Thursday and no one called to inform us before we took the trip. The manager on duty told us that if we stayed, the first night without AC would be fully refunded. We stayed and the AC was fixed at 2:30 AM. Due to the AC issue the carpeting and furniture were wet and disgusting. At the end, they only refunded us the resort fees for the two night and an additional $50. They played the blame game with the managers and ultimately the general manager who was not available to speak with made the decision and her word was final. Aside from this gross mismanagement, the hotel is totally outdated from the rooms to the sagging pool liner, which wobbles under your feet. I wouldn't recommend staying here even if they promised a free night.

Yelp
What a nice hotel in Asbury. The rooms were very clean and spacious. My room overlooked the town. It was a vey cold and windy night you could hear the wind howling through the windows but the room was nice and warm.

Yelp
Wouldn't recommend. They nickel and dime you for everything. Parking is $50 a day! You're not allowed to bring a drink to the pool. A small bottle of water is $10! Nice enough but not worth it.

Yelp
So I get it, the location is ideal so that's why you pay the 500 a night BUT it is seriously lacking in some basic amenities. First off the rooms have NO fridge, I haven't come across this in decades. Also NO smart tv. Some basic and I mean basic cable channels. Our tub was broken so with 2 toddlers that was a bummer. Also we paid for a partial ocean view room, but had a complete inland view with ripped screens. For some reason our family suffered bad allergies in the room, maybe the feather pillows. Not sure, but this is an issue we never had before. But alas, the mattresses were very comfortable. You have to pay to park, either 60 for "valet" if they have the room, but we had to pay for meter parking. Gets pricy. Heard a few people irate at the desk that they did not get the room (that they booked) with enough beds or pull outs for their family. Happened multiple times. The pool is GROSS possibly the worst condition I've ever seen in a hotel. Chlorine is high yes but it was completely cloudy, and we were constantly being wrapped around the legs and arms with chunks of hair. Yeah, gross. The cafe has good food, good coffee so that was a plus. Also the entry way is artsy and cute. If your really hard up for a beach hotel and your booking last minute, that should be your only excuse for using this hotel. Your getting the La-Quinta experience and 2-3x the price.

Yelp
Pictures of black mold attached. We checked in 7/29 and left 7/31. Late night 7/29, the carbon monoxide detector in our room went off. We called the front desk, and they sent someone to manually turn the alarm off. Soon after, the detector went off again and maintenance came back and just removed the detector from the wall, and did not replace it. Saturday I woke up with the worst headache and sinus pain, and ended up staying in the room all day because the headache wouldn't go away. Monday morning I still had the same headache and sinus pain. I went to take a shower before we checked out, and noticed a large cluster of black spots on the bathroom ceiling. I have attached pictures and it 100% is black mold. We checked out immediately and showed the picture to the employee at the front desk, who agreed that it was mold. She also said the room is inhabitable without a carbon monoxide detector. They definitely should have moved us to a different room. After seeing the mold, I'm concerned that might have been causing the detector to go off and causing my headache, especially since I started to feel better soon after leaving. We asked to speak to a manager and were told one was not available but then would call us. We haven't received a call, and tried to call again 3 days later and no one answered.

Yelp
So we stayed 2 nights. Upon check in, we were trying to Valet Park our car. Well at 1:30 in the afternoon we were told there were no spots!!!! Go look for street parking. We were told there were 85 spots and 150 rooms. So mostly everyone coming here is driving a car. So we drove around for about 35 minutes and found a meter spot. Till the next morning, then when people checked out, we were able to valet. So they need to fix the parking situation. Meanwhile the whole weekend, a white Porsche was parked in the fire lane of the entrance of the hotel. Our room was ready a little early, so that was a plus. The room was spacious and clean. No refrigerator, if you want one, they bring it for a fee. Never seen that. The hotel is old, but was centrally placed. Right near the boardwalk. They had a pool, that seamed to be crowded. There was a nice place to grab a bite to eat The Wi-Fi was terrible.

Yelp
So I made a reservation and it was $500 for a night. I specifically asked if the hotel has parking. They said yes sir, I pulled up a few house later and the valet says to me the garage is full. So what am I supposed to do? Put my car in my suitcase. Beyond pathetic. I guess it's ok to be like that if you are a 2 star hotel on the beach on New Jersey

Yelp
WOW! No parking .... was told by the front desk the lot is full since Thursday. (it's Saturday) After driving for many hours away to stay - we are told to park on the street and pay metered parking. Total garbage. Not cool.

Yelp
First off, SHAME ON ME! I should have done my Yelp research. Listed with the local Chamber of Commerce and close to the beach, Berkeley seemed like a good fit, but was hands down my worst hotel experience ever. Not worth the money, the stress nor the rudeness. Upon arrival, there was a loud argument between guests and management in the lobby. It continued as we waited and management just continued to push back against guests who were claiming to have been denied service. Our room was not ready so we did the paperwork and planned to return. On our return, we were directed to the $45/day valet parking which was unattended with no fence, security and hardly any lighting. We managed to get our room keys, wait in line for one of the two working elevators which were occupied at socially distant levels. The Building is an X-shape and one quadrant faces the ocean, three others do not. When we booked an Ocean View room, we expected an Ocean View having paid a higher price than the PARTIAL Ocean View option available at a lower rate (such as the one we were assigned). The room was generously spaced but upon further inspection was lacking in many basic amenities. Absent were the bathrobes listed on their website but also the common things one has grown to expect in a hotel such as a mini-fridge, working clock, coffee maker, shower soap or even outlets! One side of the bed was electrically dead--lamp wouldn't work nor charging port. On hands and knees I get on the floor which has not been vacuumed--there are leaves and food particles under the bed! I cannot get to the outlet because it is on the wall behind the wall-mounted headboard, so we do without, taking turns at the one working outlet by the bed. The desk? No outlets within cord range of any laptop. Asbury Park itself is a win that far exceeded expectations. The beach and water are clean, the other beach-goers friendly and respectful. Restaurants nearby relaxing and accommodating. All of this evaporated upon every re-entry to the hotel. When I shared the photo below with the front desk, I was told that the partial view I snapped on the phone was indeed "Ocean View" not "Partial Ocean View" and shunted off to a manager, Joseph. I met him the night before when he was making a dog's breakfast of managing the ever-lengthening elevator line. Without looking at the photo he insisted we were Ocean View, dismissed any issue and said "what else?" over anything I said. This is the exact opposite of hospitality. The staff literally has contempt for the guests. What else? Well, the intermittent wifi? The missing amenities. The lack of towels for the beach the sense of customer needs? It was useless. I mentioned I would be writing a review and he taunted back. I held up my phone as a gesture and he and the first rude front desk attendant both ducked...this seems to be a common practice. He yelled back that he would have me arrested and that it is illegal to take photos! No such sign existed and I was tempted to say great, call the cops because I am being robbed by your clearly false advertising. We continued to have fun in AP despite the hotel experiences. These were only reinforced every time we came back and heard or saw another frustrated guest fighting or arguing with the staff over misleading, failed or lacking "amenities". On day two we awoke to a dog barking loudly in another room and an airless, muggy room. The A/C went out overnight and mind you the windows do not open. I pulled back the drapes and lady bugs shook out of the fabric! Although it was breezy and in the 60's outside, we had a low of 79, high of 82 in the room. We called inquiring about a fix and they said "momentarily". Air did not come on all day until after 11pm, and then only at a trickle. Room temperature was 77 the next morning upon check out despite being set all the way to its lowest level. Of course, no refund, no apology...the customer is to blame for everything. The hotel is responsible for nothing. How dare you book with them? Lesson learned. As I sat in the roasting room last night and read through so many low-star reviews on this, I can agree with much of what is being said. I try to support locally owned businesses but the public must be warned against this simply false advertising which does not provide basic amenities such as power or air conditioning let alone the premium ones like bathrobes as listed on their site, simply a sour experience. As for Joseph, he saw us coming to check out and suddenly ran to hide. This is their service. Last note, on check out they don't ask "how was your stay?" which is industry-standard practice because they seemingly already know, don't care and have no intention of remedying any of it.

Yelp
Overpriced $hit hole. Stayed there 3 nights recently. Owners clearly know demand is high and supply is low in Asbury Park. Understaffed for key checkout hours and not enough valet carts to go around. The pool, and I use the term loosely, is DISGUSTING. It's so cloudy (not from chlorine) that you can't see the bottom. Probably best because the floor of the pool is littered with garbage. Same clumps of hair/weave were floating in the pool the day we arrived and left. The pool liner is ripping and loose everywhere. And there is always scum floating somewhere in it. Spend the extra money and stay anywhere else. Owners want less demand apparently.

Yelp
ASBURY PARK: everyone knows of the majestic The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel, but we really feel like the hotel bar is a hidden gem! A modern space with a full counter and a few tables, dogs are allowed to join you for a drink! Their restaurant closed for the season, but when it opens again in the spring, you can order food from the bar too! In the meantime, you can bring in outside food. We spent the afternoon watching football and Brie was making friends with the patrons. Consider this place as a stop during your visit to Asbury! Dogs (and cats) are also allowed to stay at the hotel; we cannot wait to spend the night in the future and give our full review!
