15 Best Things to Do in the Berkshires

"A preservation-focused railway museum that maintains historic equipment and offers seasonal excursions—such as fall foliage rides and a winter Santa train—allowing visitors to experience the region's landscapes by rail." - Lauren Dana Ellman Lauren Dana Ellman Lauren Dana Ellman is a New York-based writer and editor who specializes in travel, lifestyle, food, and shopping content. Know that the “scenic views” are limited to what you can see along the tracks in downtown. You ride backward for 15 mins then forward for 15 mins. If you’re lucky you sit in a seat that flips to accommodate this straight trip to the end of the line and back again. Nice view of some water ways and ancient cemetery. This is run by volunteers. There’s a little bit of pre scripted information read over an antiquated PA system but most of the time ya just sit and look out the window waiting to get back to the station. Sheldon Cooper would have been disappointed. (I know I was. ) No facilities on the train so get to the station early to stand in line to use the restroom. There’s a small gift shop/museum inside an old train car at the station. Lots of interesting reads about the history of the city and its industry and why the railway was brought to the area.

We took past the peak no Thu train, which this year was actually at the peak of colors. The views were better than I expected from reading reviews. However you need to sit on the right side of the train when it goes out. We switched sides on the way back and it was less attractive. Yes, there were some delapedated back yards, and tossed away mattresses but not all the time. The train ride is 45 minutes.the staff is friendly and informative if you ask questions, but there was no history lessons. The train was a 1953 commuter train, so not historic or particularly interesting but clean and comfortable. The train was just one car and almost full.

Good fun, a smooth ride, and friendly, knowledgeable volunteers. Even on a grey, misty day in late October the Berkshire Scenic has plenty to offer and is worth a trip. We’ve been to many scenic railways and each has its own charm. The Berkshire is no exception. It is a smooth ride with great views of the nearby mountains and surrounding towns. The conductors were very friendly and shared a bit of the story of the railway and the train we were riding. Ask for the optional trip guide. It includes the backstory and a helpful history of many sites along the way.

Very small and interesting museum ran by volunteers. Nice staff. The $5 “train ride” is really a walking tour by a very knowledgeable narrator. Got to see many old engines and cars from 100 years ago and learn about how things work back then.

The drive to Lenox station was about 2 hours which was fine because the sites and scenery was beautiful. Station and train was clean and in excellent condition considering the train was 100 years old. The staff is extremely nice. Very knowledgeable. And the staff is all volunteer. The reason I gave them a 3 star was because it said it was an hour ride. You ride for a half hour, and when you reach the destination, the train then goes in reverse back the same way you came. You are allowed to swap seats and sit on the opposite side for a different view. You pretty much drive by industrial areas, nothing real scenic. But the idea of riding the train is really nice. It gives you an idea of whether you could handle taking a longer train ride. They also handed out snacks and small bottles of water. And on the return ride they then handed out snacks again. No charge for any of these. The experience was nice, train was extremely clean, the staff was friendly and professional. The ride was just too short. If it was longer, it would've been great

Google
Great train ride. I was there for a convention and a great conversation with train staff. Great historic equipment and a scenic ride.

Staff were nice, got to see some things and take photos. Only complaint I have is that there were wasps flying around in the storage yard (but luckily nobody was stung). The museum is still a work in progress, and It's a safe assumption that there's a lot of work to do. Good place to go if you want to see an FL9 up close

#ironmountainironhauling.com We relocated a converted box car from this location to a different line in Canterbury, NH on 11-4-21.

Yelp
Cute if you're in the area - no long train rides but they do little minute long rides and blow the horn which is fun. Very pretty overlooking the pond out back. The little museum inside the old train station is cute, not a ton to see but it is interesting to learn about the trains in the yard. $5 for adults

Yelp
This is no museum. It is the seventh gate of hell, reserved for the worst of sinners. We went here for the sake of a young child's entertainment but, much like the other children there at the time, his joy and excitement (and maybe even his soul) quickly dissipated. There isn't much to see or do, and the staff is comprised solely of people ages 75 and up. One staff member in particular, a half-man named "Matt", was rude and boring. He had no people skills, and couldn't handle the fact that a TWO-year old couldn't tolerate his awful railroad rantings...but neither could any of the adults on the tour. If you want to piss away a perfectly good $9, then stop by this "museum", or your local Subway for lunch.

Yelp
The train ride was marketed as a fall foliage train ride and unfortunately it did not deliver. The train ride was a historic tour through Adams which was mostly industrial. Just seeing leaves in the background does not make it a foliage ride. They need to update their marketing to reflect the experience they are delivering.

Yelp
Apparently a review for the BSRM could mean the museum itself, the old train ride (pre-2016), or new train ride out of North Adams, MA (2016+). Having heard that it was scheduled to open, I tried to go in 2015 but they apparently only had one weekend of trips. So, when they announced a scheduled run in 2016 the same weekend as my birthday (Memorial Day) I jumped on it. I am a train nut, so even a bad train yet will still garner a couple of stars here. However, based on our trip in May I can only give it three. Here is why: 1.) It was HOT. VERY HOT. Riding in the train/RDC with no air conditioning, or the ability to open windows, led to most people on our train ride being very uncomfortable. People were visibly sweating. No water was sold on the train, which would have helped. Waiting for the train, there wasn't a "station" of sorts so people gathered in line on the ballast in whatever shade could be found. The only breeze came when the train was moving through the front and rear door, but it just isn't enough. An open riding car would help a lot. And that was just May. 2.) A conductor read from a script about the things we were passing by as the train rolled along. It was nice, but it was hard to hear, even though the entire train is one car long! The speakers need to be turned up. BUT... he also read for nearly the entire trip. Without stopping. It was just a wall of noise that we tried to tune out as we wanted to talk on the train, not listen to someone read something for 80 minutes or so. On the return trip, it seemed like (from the bits and pieces we could make out) that he was just reading the paper in reverse. Some interesting commentary is nice, but it needs to be cut back and louder. I hope they do well. I have heard that the AC was repaired, which would be great. Also, the scenery was less than spectacular (some old factories, some old roads, some trees, etc.) but perhaps in the fall when the leaves change colors it would be really nice I bet. I probably would come back and ride it, but as train rides go it wasn't one of the better ones.

Yelp
I think it is a bit of a stretch to call this a museum. They have a few exhibits, but I would imagine that most people come here just to the ride the train. The ride itself is slow and shaky, but I enjoyed it. There isn't much to see, mostly woods, but the speaker did a great job at explaining all the points of interest along the way and the history of the train. A word of caution, if you go on a really hot day as we did, there is no AC and not all the windows go up, so make sure you sit next to or behind an open window. I think it is worth seeing, especially if you are into trains, but don't expect too much.

Yelp
Go see this place before it closes! The people who own the rights to the tracks they used to use for the train ride have refused to renew the contract, so for now the scenic ride is on hold. The folks who run the museum were very nice and knowledgeable, and while you can only currently ride the train for about 200 feet, it's still interesting to see the inside of a restored antique train. You're guaranteed to walk away knowing more about trains than you did before. The place is in serious danger of closing, though, so go visit and show your support while you can.

Yelp
This was a very fun excursion with the family. Nice tour tons of education but not overwhelming. The experience can be as long as you want to be. My husband loves trains so we took the kids and I had a great time as well. Not a huge museum by any means but so worth it!
