Visiting the East Side Gallery was a great experience. Walking along the longest remaining part of the Berlin Wall, covered in bold and emotional street art, feels incredibly powerful. The famous Fraternal Kiss really stands out. It’s free, easy to get to from Warschauer Straße, and a must-see if you want to feel Berlin’s history and artistic spirit.

The wall was heavily guarded, and attempting to cross it often resulted in death or arrest. After the fall of the wall on November 9, 1989, it became a symbol of freedom and reunification. An important part of history that is a must see! The Wall was built in 1961 to prevent East Germans from fleeing and stop an economically disastrous migration of workers. It was quite emotional walking along the Berlin wall. The art work is incredible. I can't imagine living in those times.

I felt this was extremely powerful. There is a free audioguide you can use with your phone from a QR code on the map. Along the way they offer sights/memorials to the times of The Wall. This is a complete free activity unless you join a tour. There are plenty of materials to read, buttons to press and listen to information, and things to see.

US President Ronald Reagan Berlin Wall was built to separate East (German Democratic Republic supported by the Soviets) and West Germany (Federal Republic of Germany) in 1961. It's a 96 mile heavily guarded concrete wall about 13 feet high splitting the city center so that people from the East won't come to the West due to political and economic differences. There's not a doubt building a wall is alienating. Friends and families got separated by it. Soldiers and watchdogs were put in place to prevent people escaping but some people were still able to get to the West by building a tunnel but most people didn't make it across and lost their lives. Gorbachev was in power of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union in 1985 and things started to dismantle. The wall finally fell in 1989. Some parts of the wall still remain standing and murals have been painted on parts of the wall. The most famous mural is "The Kiss" by Dmitri Vrubel of Leonid Brezhnev (General Secretary of the Soviet Union at the time), and Erich Honecker (General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party of the GDR) kissing - the socialist way of greeting. You can also spot a Banksy. Keep your eyes peeled since it's not a big and colorful piece. It's free to walk along and see the Berlin Wall remains.

In spring 2015, I stopped off in Berlin for a few days during my month-long trip to Scandinavia. It was during this trip that I really started getting into Yelping, but being relatively new to Yelp, I was still figuring things out and unfortunately I missed out on so many review opportunities, such as statues, metro stations, public squares, and even Brandenburg Gate! Geez! (For the record, I did check in to places in Berlin, but never got my Germany badge -- grrr!) I also didn't review the Berlin Wall, or what's left of it. Well, since today is the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, I thought it would be appropriate to "review" it. (Plus I needed something cool to review for my 500th Yelp review.) The Berlin Wall, built in 1961, came down on November 9, 1989, however I was unaware of this historic event as I was very young. I admit, I still get confused over all the details about the facts of the Berlin Wall and about this period in history, and it's something I would like to learn more about. While I was in Berlin, I saw remnants of the wall, as well as a piece in the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas. I'm not quite sure how many stars to give the Berlin Wall. I suppose it warrants five stars for doing what it was supposed to do -- separate West Berlin from East Germany. But, that wasn't really a good thing, and it warrants one star for separating families and being an all around fucked up part of history. First time in Berlin for me. Most of the wall was torn down over 20 years ago. A small part of the wall remains standing to reflect the history of the city. Note the pictures and graffiti on these remaining parts. Be sure to observe the double-lined bricks on the ground where you can stand and be in the former East and West Berlin at the same time. Do check on its history prior to seeing this important feature of Berlin or have a knowledgeable guide to inform you.

There are various locations to witness the standing wall sections. As I made my way through the city along the wall both the reminders of the double lined bricks where the wall once stood and the standing memorials were equally impacting. I would recommend visiting the wall for anyone coming to Berlin.

I just want to ask: does anyone believe that Mauer`s souvenirs really were parts of Berliner Mauer?) I guess there were too much postcards with wall pieces and i saw a lot of tourists which naive thinks that their piece is a part of German history. :) 5 points only for historical reasons.
