Art and Culture in Berlin

"The Berlinische Galerie Museum of Modern Art is the place to come if you’re looking to get to grips with all of the great artwork movements connected to the city — in particular the modernist movements like Dada, Surrealism, Die Brücke, the Secessionists, and more. Established in 1975, its main exhibition provides an overview of Berlin art from 1880 to 1980 and spans drawings, photography, installations, and sculpture from local luminaries like Max Liebermann, Georg Grosz, and Hannah Höch. It’s a large, breezy space with plenty of eye candy (there are temporary exhibitions also) and hosts a pleasant, stylish café (Café Dix) with snacks, wine, and more, alongside tours, lectures, and film screenings." - MATADOR_NETWORK

I absolutely adored this museum. At the time of my visit there were two worthwhile exhibits and they deserved a good amount of attention each: 1 about the history of the collection and Germany as a collective item, and the second regarding work with unknown backgrounds or those in need of additional resources to secure information on province. A great place to go both for art and for German history. A+!

Modern art gallery showing works by artists who have been associated with Berlin. Worth a visit while in the area. Some of the exhibitions are temporary, so the exposition is changed.

Really gorgeous and culturally significant art work. Plaques were in German and English and many pieces has tactile versions for the visually impaired. Took about 2 to 2.5 hours to tour museum. Entry was about 10 euros.

A very enjoyable experience! The Berlinische Galerie offers a fresh and thoughtful look at modern art from Berlin. The exhibitions are well-curated and the space itself is clean, quiet, and easy to navigate. I especially liked the photography section and the way local history is connected to the artworks. The only reason I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that I wish there had been a bit more variety in the permanent collection. Still, it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re into modern art or just want something a little off the usual museum track in Berlin.

Beautiful gallery with a beautiful art and thoughtful presentation. Permanent exposition is a must see for art lovers, as it represents a pointed view at German art, particularly the art connected with Berlin. And temporary expositions bring your attention to specific artists, either modern ones, or interesting ones form Berlin's past. The size of the gallery makes it possible to see everything in 2-4 hours. Having visited on Friday in August, we had the luxury of no queue at the ticket counter and of half-empty gallery halls. On our previous visit on Saturday in November several years ago, the gallery was very crowded with a long queue to enter it. So you should plan your visit's time considering this. The gallery is located in a quiet part of former Western Berlin, with a lot of greenery and difficult to find parking (costly, too).

Me and my friends visited the gallery in September and it was nice little gateway from the rain. The gallery is well organised and there were some really interesting art pieces to see, but I feel like I expected a bit more from it ~ some parts felt rather empty, there were also some renovations being done, and I feel like building itself seemed cold, maybe due to the white colour which was all around us. 😊 But I really enjoyed the slight time-travel through art, as well as the photography exhibition. 🖼

Google
Absolutely wonderful museum and exhibition. The perfect size to be able to see everything in one day. And it’s wonderful to see the significance of the link between art and the municipality and society to which it is linked. A wonder.

Yelp
Despite being a pain to get to, this modern gallery is well worth a visit; the art starts before you even get in the building with a couple of cool external installations. Inside, the lower atrium contains the larger contemporary installations such as a to scale blow-up tank and the frame of a house's plumbing system (more exciting than it sounds - I promise). There's are a few rooms off the main hall for mainly audio and visual installations, and the gallery upstairs traces some of the strands that have led to the development of modern art. Overall, the lighting and whitewash provide the artists with a good neutral canvas. Thankfully, the art, whilst modern, is not too abstract to be enjoyed by armchair enthusiasts - although I'm not sure how often the exhibitions last. There are the obligatory cafe and shop too for when you are all cultured out.

Yelp
Decided to go to this contemporary art museum over the KW and the Hamburger Banhof and was very pleased about this decision! My favorite part was the chronological exhibit about the art of, and in Berlin from the 19th century to present-day, located on the second floor. The outdoor art was also fun and distinct. €8 for entry was well worth it. The gift shop, like the museum, is small but the items for sale were well-curated and there was a lot of quality items to choose from.

Yelp
Berlinische Galerie came highly recommended by my friend who lives in Berlin. As I did research I learned that this gallery/museum has an extensive collection of DADA artist. I am a fan of the DADA art movement and coming here was amazing. My favorite lady DADAist Hannah Höch was amongst some of my favorite dadaist and seeing her work in person and her DADA dolls that I have only seen in books was amazing. The Prussian Angel was also a highlight for me. There is a permanent collection on the art movement happing in Berlin in the 1800 - 1980.. The other rooms of the gallery feature some amazing artist and installations. This place is amazing..

Yelp
Enjoyed the mixture of artwork at the gallery plus the cafe was cheap and the food quality good. The bean soup with olives was tasty and the strammer max good because it came with good grainy bread. With drinks excellent value at 11.00EUR.

Yelp
Recently,I spent a delightful five and a half hours enjoying its fine collection of German paintings and Art from the late 1800's until the 20th Century. The earliest paintings in this art museum were popular with people who have conservative tastes in Art to the latest paintings in this art museum that cater to people with avante garde tastes in Art.Personal favorites that day from the permanent collection were.Lesser Ury's" Lying Nude",Moritz Melzer's"Girls at Beach".Fidus'"Temple Dance of Soul",Walter Leistikow's"From the Mark Brandenburg".(awesome reflections),George Tappert's"Lot and His Daughters",Felix Nussbaum's "Folly Square",Max Liebermann's"Self Portrait",Hans Baluschek's"Summer Evemimg",and Georg Grosz'"Pillars of Society"(satirizes life in Germany in the late 1920's and early 1930's).I liked the temporary November Group "Freheit" Exhibit which included fine paintings by Hannah Hoch("Journalists"),Iwar Puni,Paul Klee("Architecture"),and Willi Baumeidter, among others,This art museum is very close to the Jewish Museum and if you visited the Jewish Museum within the last 2 days and can show your ticket, you are entitled to discounted admission in the Berlin Museum. This art museum is open on Mondays, but closed on Tuesdays.
