We love historic hotels and usually find that the rooms are a little quirky, often small and 'interesting'. We booked a double room at the Berns Hotel (via a 3rd party website) for 4 nights, based on its excellent location, historic charm and nice photos. |With a late flight from London, we were looking forward to getting into our room for the night.|| Getting in it was about all you could manage. Yes, there was a clean double bed with a small table and lamp on either side. But there was also a desk covered with 'stuff', a massive tv screen at an angle poking out from the wall which dominated the room (and which we never switched on), and under counter mini bar fridge (already full of stuff we'd never buy). There was a chair, side table and a coffee machine which took up most of the corner of the room - again, never used.|The bathroom was 'wetroom' style, with a tiny glass enclosure which blocked half of the access to the sink and a mirror that you had to be at least 6 foot tall to see yourself in! The shower had a small attachment (which we could use once carefully angled) and a huge modern 'drencher' shower head (not used for fear of flooding!)|Old hotels often don't have air-conditioning, but there was a large metal boxed unit on the ceiling over the bed, so we thought we'd got lucky. No. It just blew out warm air. Ventilation was in the form of a window - about a 12 inch square - which we kept open at all times. In the heat of July, this was seriously no use at all. |There was no mirror in the bed room anywhere, except for a one inch slice of mirrored glass around the bathroom door - perfect for getting your hair or make up done - a bit at a time.||We stayed in Room 434. It was triangular and either needs to be more thoughtfully designed or utilised as a broom cupboard. With the dark wood and tiny window it was more like staying in a cabin on a ship. ||Room 434 aside, the hotel is lovely! The staff on reception are very helpful and welcoming. The hotel was spotlessly clean. The dining room was breathtakingly beautiful - with elegant chandeliers, a decorated ceiling and balcony. Breakfast was also excellent - with a choice of hot and cold food, boiled eggs, a range of breads, and muesli and overnight oats. |The location of the hotel is perfect - a couple of minutes across the park to the tram stop or the ferry, and there are shops and restaurants very close by. |Would we recommend this hotel? Yes. But be sure that you know exactly which room you are staying in! |
